I joined Slimming World on the 6th January 2004. I decided to join for a number of reasons but the main three were:
  • I wanted to loose weight
  • We were going on holiday in June
  • I want to look good in my wedding dress

I have never been very good with diets but a friend from work told me she was joining and I decided that I would join with her and give it a go.We go every Tuesday dinner time, between 12 - 1pm.

******************HOW TO JOIN********************

You can join Slimming world by finding a group in your area. To do this, you should telephone the following number to ask for your nearest class: 08700754666

Once you have done this you will be required to pay the joining fee and then a class fee.

The joining fee is currently £10, but from time to time there are deals where the joining fee is halved or waived altogether. The class fees are currently £3.95 a week.Once you are a member you are entitled to the following benefits:
  • Access to the members area on the website
  • Four weeks holiday (where you do not pay)
  • Support from your group
  • Support from your advisor

*****************WHAT TO EXPECT****************The very first class you go to you will be weighed and you weight will be recorded in your book. You will also then stay for class, to learn what it is all about and how other people are getting on and then at the end you will be spoken to about how to follow Slimming World and any questions you may have will be answered.

Once you attend the next class, every class is the same. You will be weighed and your weight will be recorded in your book, for you to keep.

Once everyone has been weighed, the class consultant will then read out everybody’s names and how much weight they have lost this week and altogether. Your actual weight is never disclosed, just what you have lost or gained!

You will be given a round of applause for your accomplishment and then you will be asked a few simple questions about what sort a week you have had and how you think you have got on. You will then be asked how much you wish to loose for next weeks class and this will be recorded.

Once the whole group has been done, a raffle is sometimes drawn (depending on your class) and then Slimmer of the Week is announced.

If it is the end of the month, then Slimmer of the Month is also announced. Being Slimmer of the Month can involve a small cash reward!

********************THE DIET***********************

The Slimming world diet is referred to as Food Optimising. This means making the most of the foods you can eat. Nothing is banned; you are allowed to eat anything you want, even chocolate!

The Slimming world diet is split into these sections:
  • Green days
  • Red Days

In each of the options above you will then have to select food from the following sections:
  • Free Food (eat as much as you like)
  • A choices (you can choose 2)
  • B choices (you can choose 2)
  • Sins (you can have between 10 and 15 a day)

Depending on whether you choose a red day or a green day will determine the kinds of foods you can eat as much as you like of.

In general, if you like pasta and potatoes you will enjoy green days, if you like meats, you will enjoy red days.

This does not mean that you can not have meat on a green day; it just means that it is B choice and you will have to weigh it, to ensure you do not go over your allowance.

********************GREEN DAYS******************

On a green day you can choose from the following foods:FREE FOOD - EAT AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE
  • Potatoes
  • Pasta
  • Beans
  • Peas
  • Lentils
  • Rice
  • Eggs
  • Cheese
  • Vegetables
  • Fruit.

A CHOICES - CHOOSE 2
  • Milk
  • Cheese (different amounts and types)

B CHOICES - CHOOSE 2
  • Measured meats and fish
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Cereals and crisp breads
  • Bread
  • Cheese
  • Dried and canned fruits

A and B choices are measured and controlled but free foods can be eaten freely, without any worry.********************RED DAYS**********************

On a red day you can choose from the following foods:

FREE FOODS - EAT AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE
  • Meat
  • Poultry
  • Fish
  • Cheese
  • Eggs
  • Vegetables
  • Fruits.

A CHOICES - CHOOSE 2
  • Milk
  • Cheese (measured amounts and types)

B CHOICES - CHOOSE 2
  • Beans
  • Lentils
  • Peas
  • Pasta
  • Soups
  • Vegetables
  • Cereals
  • Crisp breads
  • Bread
  • Dried and canned fruits.

A and B choices are measured and controlled but free foods can be eaten freely, without any worry.

***********************SYNS************************

Foods that are not listed in the free foods section all have a syn value. In the handbook that you are provided with when you join, there is a section that lists the syn values for a lot of foods.

You are allowed between 10 and 15 syns a day. An example of this would be:

2 digestive biscuits = 7 syns (3.5 each)
Battenberg Cake (28g) = 5.5 syns

On this day you will notice that you have consumed 13.5 syns.

Syn values for some food can change, depending on whether you are having a green day or a red day, so it is handy if you get into the habit of carrying around your handbook, so that you can use it as a reference guide.

A book can be purchased from your Slimming world consultant, which lists all foods, where you can buy them from and what their syn values are on green and red days. This book costs £5.99.

********************HANDBOOK********************

The handbook that you are given when you join is full of information for you and advice. It will also contain the contact details of your consultant.

You will be required to take this book with you to every lesson, so that your weight can be recorded in it, for your own personal use.

The contents of the handbook are roughly as follows:

*A welcome to their world - consists of telling you a little bit about the programme and what you should expect.

*Your slimming success starts here - consists of running through the options available to you and it will help you to decide whether you would get from green days or red days.

*Free food; make it work for you - Recipes that show you what you are able to eat on green and red days. Gives examples for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

*The green choice - all the information that you need to be able to choose and follow the green day plan.

*The red choice - all the information that you need to be able to choose and follow a red day plan.

*All about syns - lists some foods and their syn values for both red and green days.

*Slimming world extras - consists of exercise ideas, weight tables and charts and your own weight record.

********SLIMMER OF THE WEEK AWARD*********

Every week there is a slimmer of the week. This is the person in the class that has lost the most weight, since the last class.

If you are slimmer of the week, you will receive a "slimmer of the week" sticker, which you can put anywhere and depending on your consultant, you may also receive a little token gift. At my class, slimmer of the week receives some fruit, usually about 6-8 pieces.

********SLIMMER OF THE MONTH AWARD*******

Slimmer of the month is the same as slimmer of the week. The person that has lost the most weight in a month receives a "slimmer of the month" sticker and depending on your class, a little token gift as well. In my class, slimmer of the month receives £5 as well as their sticker.

**********ACCOMPLISHMENT AWARDS**********

For every half a stone lost you will be provided with a sticker award. Currently I have three. They start from 1/2 stone and continue in this pattern.

The 1/2 stone award is red, the stone award is blue and the one and a half stone award is yellow.

I can not tell you what the rest are, as I do not know, but I will update when I achieve my two stone award!

*****************CLUB 10 AWARD*****************

Your club 10 target will be worked out by your consultant at your very first class. You club 10 weight is the weight that you need to get to, to have lost 10% of your body weight.

The club 10 award is pink in colour and is in the same style as the other sticker awards. They can be placed on your handbook as a constant reminder of what you have achieved or they can be put anywhere you choose.

*********************MY OPINION*******************

In the five months that I have been a member here is what I have achieved:
  • Slimmer of the week X3
  • Slimmer of the month X1
  • Total weight loss of 1stone 10lbs

I have found Slimming world very easy to follow, but there is a lot to take in, in the beginning. To be honest with you, I went for a couple of weeks and thought I would never be able to do it, but when I read my handbook properly, it all just seemed to fall into place!

I know you are probably thinking that it sounds very complicated, but it really isn't! Once you have followed the programme for a couple of days you will begin to remember what you can eat on which days and then you will not need to carry your book around with you, everywhere you go.

I tend to do Green days all the time, as I am not a big meat eater and so if I fancy any meat I will have it as my B choice. It makes no difference as to whether you do green all the time or red all the time or a mixture of both. As long as you follow the programme the weight will come off.

I have to say that when I first joined my partner had no enthusiasm for me at all, because he never thought I would loose weight.

After a few weeks he started to notice that the weight was coming off and now every week he makes a point of asking me how much I have lost, as it is noticeable now that I have lost weight and he is proud of me and pleased for me.

If you are wanting to loose weight but you are not sure of how to do it, then I would strongly suggest you look into Slimming World classes. I never thought it would work, but it does and it is relatively easy to follow.

It is now second nature to me and even though I am bad sometimes, as long as I am sensible, I can still loose weight.

I even managed to loose weight when I went on holiday to Spain for two weeks and I wasn't even trying! The consultant didn't expect me have lost anything when I returned as I told her the diet was going out of the window while I was away, but when I stepped on the scales I had lost 3lb and that had taken me to a stone and a half in total. We were both surprised, but both very pleased.

Slimming World is something that I will follow for the rest of my life now. It is easy to do and it provides results. When I have lost all of the weight that I want to, I will still attend class, so that I do not slip back into my old eating habits. Slimming World do let you have free weeks, once you have hit your target, if you can stay within 5lbs of it. I have not hit my target yet, but I am half way there. Just another 17lbs to go!

*Red days can also be refered to as Original days!
