Advantages very funny
Disadvantages none
This is the first book in the lighten up series by Pete Cohen and Judith Verity and it's all about the first "Lighten up" course that he started. For those of you that haven't read my Lighten up opinion on the two books that came after this one you will need to know a bit about the Lighten up course.
Well Lighten up is a weight loss course with a difference Pete Cohen gives you ideas that you can keep with you for life and in his 8 or 4 week courses you learn all you need to know to get slimmer, fitter and healthier for life.Well this book shows you how the lighten up idea was born and how the first people to do were not perfect but they overcame their over eating and sometimes over exercising patterns to become slimmer, fitter and healthier.
It's more like a reality TV programme you follow the lives of these people and of Pete and you get to see how difficult it is to overcome some things. The most fascinating thing I found in this book was the other slimming club and how the leader was getting more and more interested in what Pete was doing and at first she made fun of Pete and his methods but I suppose I should really let you read it to find out if her opinion changed at all.
You get to follow Pete's friend Lisa, who at the beginning was exercising like mad and constantly dieting. Then there is Mo her flatmate, and another one of Pete's mates, she works with food and not very sure of herself due to being overweight. These two are the main two characters but there are others as well including Chris, Ben and Faye.I found this book very funny and a great introduction to the lighten up course and even though I had read most of the lighten up book (the 8 week one) I felt that I wanted to read this book too. This book is very well written, see below for details of the authors.
I also have the tape that helps with the visualisation techniques and you can sign up and lighten up online too. This book is full of facts and interesting things that get your brain thinking. You need to listen to your body and learn to trust it. The story is told is on the right hand side of the book with the left hand side dedicated to a saying or cartoon to help get the lighten up message across and the book is 337 pages long.
I was quite disappointed to have finished it as I got engrossed in it quite quickly and I ended up willing these people to succeed. The Authors

Judith Verity has 30 years of varied experience as a probation officer, counsellor, trainer, business woman and writer. She was so inspired by Pete's story when she met him that they decided to work together to put Lighten Up into writing.
I bought this book from the lighten up website www.lightenup.co.uk and it costs £9.99 + £2.89 p&p I can't seem to find it elsewhere but the other books are available from Amazon.co.uk.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone that has ever had any problems with weight, diets, food or just life in general and also for anyone that just wants a funny book about real people. Thanks for reading
Amanda
