Excellent book!!!
Although the concept of killer slugs is somewhat hard to grasp, "they are small and squirmy...how scary can they be", the actual book is excellent.

Advantages: Excellently written and unputdownable! Disadvantages: Some may find it a little too gory in places!

Shaun Hutson is an excellent horror writer and if you've been reading the likes of Stephen King, James Herbert, and Dean Koontz, then you've missed one out and need to discover Shaun Hutson.
His writing style is so much clearer than that of Stephen King for example ... ...unorganized in style although admittedly with flawless ideas.
You must remember that this book is somewhat classic horror now following in the style of The Rats and Night of The Crabs, if you loved these of indeed like 80s horror then this is a must read as it stands the test of time and you almost forget its age and could mistake it for a newer publication.

His writing style is so much clearer than that of Stephen King for example who I sometimes find to be a bit rambling and unorganized in style although admittedly with flawless ideas.

Also a quick work of warning this book is not for the faint hearted as Shaun Hutson's graphic horror scenes are just that GRAPHIC they leave little to the imagination and some readers may find them a bit sick and vile but in the context of the rest of the book they are infrequent enough and well placed.
After reading this I have become a Shaun Hutson fan and have read some of his other books, also I periodically check is website as his blog is hilarious!!
Advantages: ummm... can't think of one Disadvantages: plot, characters, location, 'realism'- or lack of
I would feel better writing a review on the previous review, by RichardW, as it is much better written than Shaun Hutson's entire book. Indeed, the threat possibly to be posed by slowly crawling, slimy slugs, can't really be taken very seriously. In fact, in the book the threat is not even noticed by anyone of consequence, let alone taken seriously! People are dropping off, and getting chewed up, left, right, and centre, and it's all up to a local ...

Advantages: Where? Oh all right, it's well written, for what it is... Disadvantages: The plot.
...with other horror fans who love the Slugs sequence (there is actually, God help me, a sequel). I can't see it, though I gather Hutson was only 17 when he wrote this first novel, so that's remitting at least. Nevertheless, in good conscience, I cannot recommend this book. ...

Advantages: Over the top gore, incredibly graphic detail, Disadvantages: the plot is inconceivable
One female slug can lay one and a half million eggs a year – a fact which holds terrifying consequences for the people of Merton. As the town basks in the summer heat, a new breed of slug is growing and multiplying. In the waist-high grass, in the dank, dark cellars they are acquiring new tastes, new cravings. For blood. For flesh.
HUMAN FLESH…
Like a black wave they destroy every living thing in their path without discrimination. Who would think ... ...wreaked havock with your vegetable patch could cause so much pain and death. This was the first Shaun Hutson book I read and I though it was brilliant. Before that I had been reading Stephen King books and I found them quite tame. It was a few years ago but I thought the book was great. It was ridiculous and had totally over the top gore and violence. This story is very gritty from the outset. The plot's not up to much but the amount of violence ...

Advantages: A nice read Disadvantages: None of note
been a fan of ShaunHutson from his very early books like slugs and Spawn and I thought I had read all that he had to offer. Imagine my delight therefore when I discovered Hybrid lurking on the pages of Amazon.co.uk and the realisation that I had not actually read it. Hybrid is a very clever piece of writing from Hutson in that it contains a story within a story, I sometimes forgot I was reading about a struggling author so engrossing was the story about Sean Doyle and his Counter Terrorist work, I actually found myself caring far more for Doyle?s character than for that of Christopher Ward. The first two thirds of the book are largely taken up with the story within the story but then as the manuscript is finished it switches to the author and his struggles to find out how and why the story was being written. Hutson himself says in his ...
