Advantages Advantages Excellently written and unputdownable!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some may find it a little too gory in places!

Excellent book!!! Although the concept of killer slugs is somewhat hard to grasp, "they are small and squirmy...how scary can they be", the actual book is excellent. Shaun Hutson is an excellent horror writer and if you've been reading the likes of Stephen King, James Herbert, and Dean Koontz, then you've missed one out and need to discover Shaun Hutson. His writing style is so much clearer than that of Stephen King for example who I sometimes find to be a bit rambling and unorganized in style although admittedly with flawless ideas. You must remember that this book is somewhat classic horror ... more

I would feel better writing a review on the previous review, by RichardW, as it is much better written than Shaun Hutson's entire book. Indeed, the threat possibly to be posed by slowly crawling, slimy slugs, can't really be taken very seriously. In fact, in the book the threat is not even noticed by anyone of consequence, let alone taken seriously! People are dropping off, and getting chewed up, left, right, and centre, and it's all up to a local plumber, and a council man, to sort it out. Hardly sex objects, either! I suspect the main artistice endeavours and effort in this book went into ... more

Advantages Advantages Where? Oh all right, it's well written, for what it is...

    Disadvantages Disadvantages The plot.

Trash. The world's slowest moving community is terrorised by carnivorous slugs. 'They're coming! They're still coming! They're on their way! They'll be here soon! Run! Or saunter vaguely in the opposite direction! Actually, there's no hurry! Take your time! Finish your drinks! They're coming!' Truly awful. Pluck your eyeballs from your head and boil them in salt rather than read this. Other than that, words fail me. I've had several discussions now with other horror fans who love the Slugs sequence (there is actually, God help me, a sequel). I can't see it, though I gather Hutson was only 17 ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages the plot is inconceivable

One female slug can lay one and a half million eggs a year – a fact which holds terrifying consequences for the people of Merton. As the town basks in the summer heat, a new breed of slug is growing and multiplying. In the waist-high grass, in the dank, dark cellars they are acquiring new tastes, new cravings. For blood. For flesh. HUMAN FLESH… Like a black wave they destroy every living thing in their path without discrimination. Who would think something that was about an inch long and normally only wreaked havock with your vegetable patch could cause so much pain and death. This was the ... more
