We're always getting leaflets, junk mail and rubbish of some form or another at our house, and in amongst last week's delivery we received a coupon for some Smarties Push Up Ice Creams. Actually, I'll be honest, mum had binned the coupon but I spied it lying on top of the rubbish and pulled it out to use later, as it looked like a good deal. It said I could pick up a box of five of these at my local supermarket for half of the normal retail price. I like a bit of a bargain, not to mention the fact that I also like ice cream and chocolate, so I had no option but to retrieve the coupon and try to remember to use it the next time I went grocery shopping with mum. I didn't wait long…. about two days later, to be exact.
There were only about half a dozen boxes left by the time we got to our local Tesco, so I'm guessing a lot of people must have been making use of their coupons, too. I put them in our trolley and mum raised her eyebrows at me (as she always does). I reminded her that I had the coupon with me and she said to go ahead.
Strangely enough (especially for me), I actually forgot to eat one until about two nights later. Dad had helped us put the shopping straight in the freezer and I think that's how I forgot we'd bought them. It was late on Tuesday night while I was watching TV that I suddenly remembered about them. I quickly got the lovely brightly coloured box from the freezer, pulled it open and set to work on demolishing my ice cream.
Looking at the strange little push up tube, with its pictures of loads of different coloured Smarties, it's clear to see that these are aimed at little children. There's a note for health conscious mums/parents on the wrapping, too, stating that they do not contain any artificial preservatives, colourings or flavourings etc.. it sounded healthy enough to me so I carefully removed the foil top and proceeded to push up my little tube of ice cream.
They aren't actually that big and I was a little disappointed at their size if I'm completely honest. They contain 90ml of ice cream and the stick, which holds the ice cream is transparent and has loads of Smarties inside. A good gimmick, I think, and I can see whey this product would appeal to kids. It was kind of difficult to push the ice cream up the tube at first as it was so frozen hard and I had to wait a little while to let it melt a bit. Unfortunately, I am a very impatient person, especially when it comes to having to wait to eat anything, and I was perhaps a bit too forceful with the push up thing and it suddenly shot to the top and this forced me into having to take a rather large mouthful of ice cream in one go. Oh, it's a hard life ….
The taste was quite nice. Very sweet and with a lovely mild vanilla after-taste. It was filled to bursting with loads and loads of tiny chopped up bits of Smarties and I quickly gobbled the lot down - it didn't take me very long at all really as they are, as I say, on the small side. After I'd finished the ice cream I got onto the 'good bit' - i.e. eating the Smarties out of the handle. This was a little more difficult than I had anticipated and I think kids would find it a bit hard managing to remove the sweets on their own and would probably need adult help. Once I'd sat and fiddled with it for a bit, I finally got the Smarties out, sat back, ….. and decided to have another.
The second one tasted just as nice as the first. Dad kept saying to mum, "I don't know where she puts it". I reckon it's because dad can't eat them due to his weight gaining problem, so I offered to make him a grated carrot sandwich (as we have a never ending supply of carrots in our house at the moment, but that's another story). Dad just threw a cushion at me and off I went to get another one.
I say if you haven't tried these lovely little ice creams in a tube and you do find them on special offer at any time, then you should definitely give them a go. I don't think I'd be tempted to pay full price for them as they are small, but they are very very tasty and very 'moreish', and definitely aimed at the kiddie market!
Advantages: fun, good if you don't like eating the traditional edible 'cone' Disadvantages: not that cheap.
== Smarties Push-Up ice-cream ==
We have tried the Smarties ice-cream cones, crunchy cones filled with broken smarties and topped with whole ones. We have also had the tubs full of broken smarties ice-cream. But these are something a bit more fun and different....
=== Cost ===
The boy got grandma to buy a pack on his last visit and they cost £2.49 for a box of 5 from Tesco. They are available in most supermarkets and frozen food places.
=== The ... ...same as the other Nestle Smarties ice-cream products. It smells sweet and pleasant on opening and it filled with crushed up mini-Smarties. It tastes a little of vanilla but mostly the taste comes from the many Smartie pieces squashed into the ice-cream. Is not that creamy but pleasant enough, too sweet for my taste to eat regularly but is a favorite with little boy.

A bit like an advanced version of a push-up ice lolly these ...

Advantages: A good idea Disadvantages: Better to make yourself for a tasty result
To celebrate yesterday's sunshine I spent today tracking down icecream treats for the freezer so the next time summer-like weather hits I won't be so unprepared. Smartiesicecream has been around for ages in tubs, but I have only just discovered the Smartiescones that you can buy. Smartiescones are simple icecream cornets filled with icecream that has crushed Smarties mixed into it, and topped with whole mini-Smarties. It's not hard, you could DIY at home and, to be honest, you might be better off doing that. Here's why.
The icecream used for Smarties-themed goodies is extremely suspect. It is supposed to be vanilla but it barely tastes of this. Forget Carte D'Or or Haagen Dazs, this is icecream at its cheapest and tastes of such. For one thing, the texture is all off - the odd bits you get without Smartiesin break off into ...
