I may seem mad, but one of the main reasons I wanted to buy a house was so I could have my very own pink smegfridge. That time came and a month before completion my partner and I were aimlessly walking through the Bentall Centre in Kingston when we chanced upon a pinkFAB32. We were due to complete on our house within a month so we decided to order it there and then, taking advantage of the money off in the January Sales. I think it was around £1,150, which I thought wasn't bad considering the cheapest I had seen on the internet was £1080 and that was plus delivery.
The sales staff in the Bentall Centre, whom were working in the Smeg section, were
actually independent contractors of Smeg. They were very obliging and informed us that we could purchase it then, and when were knew a definite completion date arrange for it to be delivered by calling a number.
The arrangements for delivery were handled directly by Smeg themselves, and so the delivery men came in a Smeg van, rather than a Bentalls van. In other words they were employees of Smeg. They were very obliging and managed to get it through a very tight porch. I always find this particularly stressful to watch, even though I am not the one trying to haul a massive fridge/freezer through a tiny door. They unwrapped the packaging and 'shock horror' a side plate was hanging off. So the they had to get the thing out of the house again and onto the van! Poor things.
We rang Smeg and they arranged a delivery for the following day. They were really good. We couldn't quite believe it, we kept thinking they had got it wrong. So we were surprised to see the same men the next day, this time with a new fridge.
They got it into the house... again... and unpacked it and we *all* breathed a sigh of relief that this one was in tip-top condition.
When everyone had left me alone with 'my fridge' I couldn't quite believe it. It was larger than I remembered. We had a gap of 65 centimetres and, it being 60 centimetres, fitted perfectly in the gap; allowing the recommended clearance of 5cm for the girth of the door, which sticks out a bit from the units. Inside the fridge part, there are around three adjustable glass shelves and a wine rack (very posh). There are two salad draws with a shelf on top at the bottom. There is a compartment running along the bottom of the door to allow for drinks and milk. There are four compartments to the top. Two of which have enclosures for smelly things. There is an egg rack.
There are three drawers in the freezer compartment. The bottom being quite short in depth. There is an ice shelf at the top, complete with ice trays. The drawers are translucent so you can see their contents.
In terms of space, which I must stress is a very subjective matter concerning the frequency of which you do your food shopping, it is quite adequate. There are only two people in our household, and we do our shops on a fortnightly basis. I can fill it up after a large shop, however please also bear in mind that I put all of my fruit and veg in there, which I know not all people do. A few days later, after we have devoured all the fattening things, it seems quite empty and spacious again. I do think it would suit a family who have frequent shops and where there is a high consumption of food.
I have had no mechanical faults whatsover and it freezes and cools depending on the temperature which I turn it to.
I does feel like a very expensive and good quality appliance.
Now, my favourite part, the 50s styling is, in my opinion, incapable of going out of date. I know it's in fashion now, but I just feel that it will never date in terms of style. I hope my fridge will last forever.
A year on, and we kind of take it for granted. We only realise just how god damn sexy it is when people come round and declare "omigod, I love your fridge!!!". We have to reply, "yes, it is nice". One male friend even commented, "I love your fridge, even though it's pink."
I would recommend shunning the beige and going for COLOUR. Don't be scared. :o)
