Alcopops first came onto our shelves around mid 90s and since then there are more and more different varieties coming on our shelves. They seem to be very popular in younger drinkers but thats not... more

Advantages Advantages tastes better than Smirnoff ice, sociable drink

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not for those who like their drinks sweet!

I’ve always drunk Smirnoff ice occasionally but I find it quite sickly after a while but a friend told me Smirnoff Black Ice was more refreshing so I decided to try that instead. The bottle is black and grey and contains 275ml of the drink. The typical Smirnoff logo is written across the bottle and underneath this Black Ice is written. The drink is described on the bottle as ’a refreshing citrus blend with triple distilled vodka for a crisp, clean bite.’ It is 5.5% vol. I found this product far more refreshing than Smirnoff Ice which I don’t particularly like. You can taste the alcohol but the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Tastes good.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None really.

Smirnoff Black Ice. An easily recognisable product, to anybody who has seen a bottle of Smirnoff Ice! Smirnoff across the bottle, with their shield underneath. The label is in black and silver, and is 'better looking' than the origional red one. The drink itself is clear, unlike Smirnoff Ice, which is more like cloudy lemonade. It is produced and bottled in Italy for the Pierre Smirnoff Company Limited. (You need to keep in a cool place away from direct sunlight.) Have bottle refridgerated first, as it's not so nice warm! But it is beautiful in a glass, with a few ice cubes and a slice of Lime ... more

Advantages Advantages Not as tooth curlingly sweet as many alcopops

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not anything special at all

The one problem with having a party is what gets left behind. I don’t mean the people who you find sleeping on your sofa the following morning, but what you find in your fridge when everyone has left. More and more often these days, these tend to be pre-mixed drinks, or alcopops. This can be a good or a bad thing, depending on what you usually drink. Of course, if you’re the only person at the party drinking John Smith’s, you’re going to be out of luck. But I’ll try anything once, and twice if I like it, so when a couple of bottles of Smirnoff Black Ice ended up as leftovers after a recent ... more

Advantages Advantages nice, good price, refreshing

Disadvantages Disadvantages too strong for some.

Another sweet concoction aimed at the text message generation that causes them to do bizarre things after a few too many. Basically, this is the epitome of alcopops. As with large bottles of Vodka, Smirnoff red label is the bog standard £10 a litre stuff whilst the black label is the triple distilled version that doesn’t leave your mouth feeling as if it has been swilled out with cleaning fluid. Smirnoff ice is made with the red label vodka, black ice is made with the black label vodka, and so it is purer and stronger. - Price/ Size - The alcopop comes in two sizes of bottle, as is the trend ... more

Advantages Advantages An alcopop for adults

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Those ads!

If James Bond were to order an alcopop - and that's a very big if; let's say, if Scaramanga put the golden gun to his head and forced him to - it would be this one. The sleek, clear bottle with the Pierre Smirnoff name embossed in capitals around the shoulders and the sober black and silver label (you will have noticed around Christmas how many gifts aimed at men come in these colours) suggest a product that is elegant yet no-nonsense, refined yet very, very masculine. Smirnoff Ice quickly became an alcopop classic, the standard by which other lemon-flavoured vodka premixes are judged. Black ... more
