Another sweet concoction aimed at the text message generation that causes them to do bizarre things after a few too many. Basically, this is the epitome of alcopops. As with large bottles of Vodka, Smirnoff red label is the bog standard £10 a litre stuff whilst the black label is the triple distilled version that doesn’t leave your mouth feeling as if it has been swilled out with cleaning fluid. Smirnoff ice is made with the red labelvodka, black ice is made with the black label vodka, and so it is purer and stronger.
- Price/ Size - The alcopop comes in two sizes of bottle, as is the trend now. Mostly you will find the 275 ml bottles (normal alcopop size) but you will also find the larger ones, litre bottles I think (not entirely sure), these are the same size as the large bottles of WKD. For the smaller bottles you will pay £1.80 - £2.50 in a bar/pub but in an off-licence you will pay about £1.25 or get 5 for £5, similar offers are available from time to time at supermarkets. By no means is black ice an expensive alcopop, it is moderately priced and you get a nice 5.5% kick from it to boot.
- Looks - The adverts said that Smirnoff black ice was as “clear as your conscience” and went on to show people doing rather naughty things. The drink is crystal clear due to the triple distilled vodka used in it, most alcopops today are some unpleasant tinge or some odd neon colour – being clear is a nice change. The bottle is clear with a plastic label with the Smirnoff logo in black on the front, it is easy to recognise.
- Smell - The drink smells strongly of citrus fruits, lime and lemon being the predominant fragrances. You can also smell the carbonated fizz of the drink… well, sort of! The smell is pleasant and isn’t sickly sweet like some alcopops are – it’s just right really.
- Taste - The taste is the most important thing with any drink really, and Smirnoff black ice squares up with the big boys in this category. The taste has a kick to it and you get the hit of the alcohol (it isn’t disguised by flavour like with some drinks). The taste is strong and citrus and combines well with the vodka. It is crisp and also refreshing and is the perfect taste if you are dancing and need a light refreshing drink. It is fairly sugary but not overly so and the taste is pretty much just right! (I still prefer WKD blue though!)
- Mix - It’s wouldn’t be a Kyz22 opinion without me giving you a recipe for an alcoholic mix, would it? So, here goes:
~The Citrus Bomb~ [®kyz22]
You will need: - A bottle of Smirnoff black ice - A lemon (fresh) - Carbonated lemonade - White wine - A large jug
Intructions: 1. Chop the lemon into a few slices (about 5, depending on the size) Take the rind from around the edges of the lemon and put it to one side. 2. Put the bits of lemon in the bottom of the jug and pour about two glasses of white wine over the top of them 3. Pour half a bottle of Smirnoff black ice into the jug and leave it for a little bit to settle 4. Grind the lemon rinds and sprinkle some on top of the drink (optional!) 5. Add about half a pint of lemonade into the jug (less if you want the drink stronger) 6. Put the jug in a freezer for 30-40 minutes until it has a coating of ice across the top 7. Break a hole in the ice and serve. 8. Enjoy
