Snakes and Ladders was one of my favourite games as a child, and is still popular today. It's a simple game which children can pick up very easily, and seem to be drawn towards.
Basically, you have a board of 100 squares, in a 10 by 10 formation. Each square is numbered in order from one to 100. The board features an equal number (usually) of snakes and ladders of different lengths, each one joining two different squares together.
You take turns to play, starting with your counter on zero. On the roll of one die, you move the required number, getting anotehr go each time you roll a 6. The winner is the first person to reach 100.
However, each time you land on the base of a ladder, you move your counter to the top. Each time you land on the head of a snake, you have to move your counter to its tail. Thus snakes hinder you, but ladders help you.
This was used by the Victorians to teach their young children the moral values of Victorian upper-class society, as each ladder or snake was originally accompanied by pictures of children being virtuous or not.
For instance, ladders were ofter acompanied by pictures of children doing their work (virtue of hard labour), or helping other people, often adults. However, snakes had pictures of children stealing, being greedy, telling lies or stealing, and breaking their toys.
Thus, Victorian parents hoped their children would assocaite the good virutes with the ladders and thus winning, whilst the immoral benhaviour was assocaited with snakes and thus failure.
The Victorians first published the game in 1892 in England, but it originated much earlier than that from India, again with its moral tales. The Victorians were great as they labelled the snakes with vices such as indolence and disobedience, and when you reached the bottom of the snake you ended up on squares labelled povery or illness - fantastic stuff! Imagine where the youth of today would be!
You can still get versions today with pictures on, especially places like Mothercare, and are great fun to explore with children today! However many versions now have more ladders than snakes, making success easier to achieve. Now what does that teach us about children's expectations today??!! Have fun!

...should update this opinion on Snakes and Ladders to show what a clever smart arse I am.
Known as Heaven and Hell in India, Snakes and Ladders is probably one of the oldest board games to grace our tables and keep the younger children amused. It can be played by anyone who can count and throw a die. (Dice is plural of die)
The board about 18 inches square is divided up into 100 squares and numbered thus starting at the bottom left hand corner and ... ...scattered around are ladders and snakes hence the name of the game, Snakes and Ladders. There are usually two long snakes and two long ladders where one of the snakes will have its head at around number 96 and a long ladder will join a square that is low down to somewhere on the top row.
As a player throws the die he moves his counter the number of places indicated by the die and if he chances upon the bottom of a ladder he climbs to the top. If ...

...Well, if there weren't snakes and ladders it would be a bit crap wouldn't it? Its good because if you get some guy who can throw sixes constantly, he can get himself a snake and lose to you. Or you could get a sneaky ladder and whoop him.
Why It's Not
lets face it - its extremely limited, Five year olds play this game - and are bored by it. Maybe its because it so good they play it a lot - or maybe not. So - Which?

HISTORY
~~~~~~
Snakes and Ladders originated in India. The ladders represented good, and the snakes represented various forms of evil. It is a Hindu game used to teach children about religion in that the good squares allowed the player to rise higher in life, whereas evil will send a player back down. The 100th square presumably represents Nirvana. The Victorians took to the game when it was published here in Britain in 1892.
If you land on the head of the snake, then you make your way down the snake to a lower number. And there you have it. Kids love this game, and I presume is still going strong in households around the world, especially India, I should imagine!
Snakes and ladders must be the most famous of children's board games, although it's fallen into disrepute over the last decade or so, as the video game with its plink plink zap has come a-flashing to the fore of the nation's consciousness and rendered all our little kiddywinks disinterested in anything requiring an attention span of more than 30 seconds, or indeed anything without moving pictures.
Snakes and Ladders is an astoundingly simple board game and it can be played by any number of contestants. The idea is that each player takes it in turns to roll the dice to determine how many squares he or she should move. If their go ends with them landing on the foot of a ladder, they climb up the ladder towards the end square; if they land on the head of a snake, they slide down the snake to its tail, away from the end ...
Snakes and Ladders
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Snakes and ladders is a very simple board game that has been around for years. The aim of the game is to get to the 'end' first. The game is based on the roll of a dice and therefore is purely down to luck.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How To Play
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The board consists of rows of 10X10 numbered squares. There are pictures of snakes and pictures of ladders which connect one square to another. The players take turns in throwing the dice and move their counter along the number of squares that the dice states. If a player lands on a square where the bottom of a ladder starts, they get to move up to the square where the top of the ladder ends. If they land on the head of a snake then they have to go down the snake to the square where its ...

Snakes and Ladders! An old game played by kids, A good classic game. You all know the rules, you have all played the game, so why are you even reading this review?
Good question, yes, but the other question is, Why am I writing it?
The answer is this:-.
I start with the fact that the game is easy, so easy in fact that you don't even need instructions, you could get people who have never seen a board game before, to play around and have a good time. Age is immaterial, so is gender.
This is a small game to stow away, so you won't have to throw it away to create more space, In the old games, the board folded in half, but nowadays the new ones actually fold in quarters, so the box is very small.
It is one of those games that actually bring a family together, rather than causing kids to argue. This is I think the main reason ...
