I have used this speed camera detector now for about 9 months and have found it very useful. I purchased it because I had been doing a lot of travelling in areas I didn't know and therefore didn't want to be caught out by a Speed Camera.
It is designed to detect Gatso Cameras. These are the most common sort of camera you can get caught by and are the bright yellow ones on the side of the road along with horizontal lines in the road. Because the cameras are operated by infrared, the Snooper picks up this signal and sounds the alarm. What is interesting is that sometimes there isn't a camera inside the box but the light will still flash. Because it is the camera that has the infrared attached to it, if you approach a camera box without a camera being in there, the alarm won't go off. Thereby you can see which have cameras in them.
The Snooper will also detect Hand Held speed traps and this can be quite useful to.
The most annoying thing I have found with this particular model is when you approach a petrol Station the alarm on the Snooper will sound. This is because the cameras on the garage forecourt have infrared detectors on them for night use and so will make the Snooper alarm. The same with traffic lights that have infrared sensors on them.
It isn't any good if you are being followed by a Police Car with surveillance camera on board. These video cameras do not use infrared and so it will not pick them up. Also, in some counties they are using GPS detection devisies - it won't pick these up either.
However, I would still recommend this unit as a cost effective way of avoiding points on your license. I bought mine off Ebay for about £65.00. This at the time was a bargain as Halfords were selling them for £250.00! There are better alarms about but for my use this is ideal.
You can turn the alarm off to mute. What this does is after the alarm sound 5 times it will make a clicking sound instead until the hazard has past. When it comes across another camera it will sound again 5 times and then go back into a clicking sound. I tend to put mine in this mode constantly as the alarm is loud even on it's lowest setting!
I hope you have found this review useful. I have tried to put in my observations after using it for 9 months.
Advantages: Gives You A Chance Disadvantages: False Alerts (but you soon work it out)
...camera. It's also proven that snooper users have less accidents (it says so on the box at least). Oh and they are 100% legal in the UK.
IN DETAIL
Range
GATSO Cameras can be detected upto 75 yards
MINI GATSO Cameras upto 400 yards
LASER and RADAR Guns upto 1 mile
Ok it depends how much you want to spend. It really is as simple as that. If you've got the money to spend then you may be better off with one of the newer gps units (snooper s4/road ... ...The manufacturers say that snooper users have less accidents. I believe this is true because since i've had mine for three years nearly i've had one accident (and that was a hit from behind). Also people who read this and think "they are illegal" THEY ARE LEGAL 100% in the UK. Don't believe me? Pop into the local police station and ask them. However they are not legal in France so you will need to check for the country that you are planning to use ...

Advantages: Will save your licence! Disadvantages: Does have a high number of false alerts.
Yes this device will save your licence!
For an entry level device this is the one to get, I wouldn't bother with the lower spec'd cheaper versions as these are more bother than they are worth.
This little device has saved me more times than I can remember and has saved my licence a few times over! It even detects the new camera vans that seem to be appearing all over the country, the only advice with these is once your device goes off if you are ... ...a second to lock on and take a reading, where as the human brain will take 0.8 of a second to react to the laser warning!!)
If you are following a car and the laser alert goes off then providing you slow down straight away you'll be safe!
It detects GATSOs from a huge distance and shows up those GATSOs which either don't work or have the signal generator only in them (Yes these are still around).
It won't tell you the following - Traffic light ...

Advantages: Advance warning of speed cameras Disadvantages: Annoying false alarms within city areas
...the cameras was when the Snooper started bleeping and flashing, which instantly made me more aware- then I noticed the lines painted on the road!
The warning range on this model is not the best but as long as you are not above the speed limit by a stupid amount it gives enough time to check and adjust your speed accordingly. It is not designed as a failsafe for driving at 120mph everywhere, this is sometimes forgotten by certain people.

All in all I would recommend the Snooper when used correctly, and with a bit of common sense. ...

Gives voice alerts rather than bleeping, shuts up if you are driving below the speed limit, tells you the reported speed of the road, records and monitors your speed limit, you can record your own high risk zones
Database is not up to date, laser detect is questionable (*)
