I bought this device because it seemed to be a cheap, yet well-featured radar detector - it is cheap, but it isn't what I would call a radar detector. The idea behind it is of course magnificent - when you approach a camera, the light starts to flash, and a warning beep is given. Your proximity to the camera determines the frequency of the beeps and flashes. The convenience of this idea will give you an idea of how irritating it is when misused - and this device is, I'm afraid, a misuse of technology! more
I bought this device because it seemed to be a cheap, yet well-featured radar detector - it is cheap, but it isn't what I would call a radar detector. It seems to me that it detects anything that emits any sort of electronic interference whatever. Driving through a little town in Sussex called Horsham, where there are very few speed cameras, I was almost permanently being warned that I was very close to a camera. Every time I passed a set of traffic lights, regardless of whether there really was a red light camera, I was warned. I'm struggling to think of why anyone would want this after using it for a week. This unit is supposed to be capable of detecting fixed Gatso's, mobile Mini-Gatso's and laser guns operated from police vans. It doesn't claim to detect any of the digital type cameras such as Truvelo or Specs, and this is another issue - if it actually worked, it is easy to imagine that one would become reliant on it as a warning, and be less alert for other types of camera. Since camera sites are supposed to alert us to danger spots, this isn't good for road safety! This detector has a City button, which is supposed to make it better at distinguishing between the radar emitted by cameras and the electronic interference from streetlights and traffic signals. This again is a great idea, but even with City mode engaged, driving through a town is impossible without being bombarded by warnings. Thankfully, another button mutes the device, allowing for a visual warning only. The stated range of the device is 3/4 mile for the laser and radar guns, and 70 yards for Gatso's. This detection is supposed to give 360 degree protection, meaning you won't miss a thing - sadly you'll have no idea what you're detecting with this unit!!
Gives voice alerts rather than bleeping, shuts up if you are driving below the speed limit, tells you the reported speed of the road, records and monitors your speed limit, you can record your own high risk zones
Database is not up to date, laser detect is questionable (*)
