WHY DO I NEED EAR PLUGS?

To combat noise during the night (thanks neighbours) that prevents/interrupts my sleep, I need comfortable, disposable foam ear plugs. This brand will NOT prevent water penetration and so these are not suitable for use while swimming.

WHERE DID I GET THEM?

Online, from the British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Assoc website, after specifically googling for noise reduction earplugs. They may be available elsewhere for all I know.

PRICE, PACKAGING ETC

I bought a bundle, at £8.50 for 25 pairs plus postage of about £3. You can order in greater bulk, 200 pairs if you want. A bundle of 25 is at least a year's supply as you do not need to replace with a new pair every week (unless you have unusually mucky ear, drop on unusually mucky floor etc). They are rinse-able. Inside the big plastic bag bundle, each pair is individually plastic wrapped so ideal for taking on hols, keeping some in bag etc. There is no small hard plastic pillbox type container with these, but then I have several from trying out Boots' earplugs. So, these work out cheaper than Boots' anyway as you can buy in bulk.

INSERTION

There are instructions on the packing (even the individual pairs) which stress you should roll the plug into a narrower shape, then insert while simultaneously pulling away your outer ear slightly to lengthen the canal thus aiding insertion. This is painless (if not you are either overdoing it or need to see your GP). Hold them in place until they have expanded within the ear. The T shaped end helps to block out noise that might creep past the ear canal entrance.

My right ear often expels its earplug during the night (any brand), but with these I cut off a few mm to shorten it, which works for me. Few of us have both ear canals the same shape or length. Since I bought these I have slept, hurrah, over my neighbours' tendencies to power shower all night, bang doors, rev motors, play music/TV etc. Did I mention I live in what estate agents call a chi-chi luxury dockside apartment? Yeah right. No noise reduction measures in the building schedule whatsoever (be warned anyone out there thinking of renting or buying a flat).

Snore Calm® earplugs are ideal for people whose partners snore; they cut out light music and noise but will only deaden, not completely obliterate all sounds such as banging of wood against walls etc. Hard surfaces themselves conduct noise. However, as I said, these plugs reduce its impact to the extent I am not woken by it any more. My partner does not wear earplugs and swears local nocturnal noises continue as usual, so Snore Calm earplugs do make a difference. He has to yell at me if I have put them in.
They are probably suitable if you are unfortunate enough to suffer from hyperacusis, ie increased sensitivity to many everyday sounds, at least if you want to sleep at night. Generally however it is recommended that people with hyperacusis try desensitisation techniques, as noise avoidance can make the problem worse in the long run.

BUY AGAIN?

You bet, until I move somewhere with proper insulation,or to a detached house in the middle of Dartmoor.
