There is a mad rush to acquire some of the old symbols of power by each side, one to dominate and one to deny.
This is the third book in the series when a lot of the previously unanswered questions become answered. The position of the human population is made plane and it is not what they think.
Alucius is the hero of this and the two previous books. He is a young man and a herder of Nightsheep and has mental abilities that are regarded as magical and also with suspicion. His wife also has some of the Herder talents.

Advantages: A new entertaining saga from the recluse saga author Disadvantages: Fantasy that will not please everybody
...and are rare. Trusted in some areas and hunted in others.
Here we have a coming of age book and more than that. Alucius is one such talented person and through him we are able to learn something about this land and its history. He has to learn about his powers and the outside world. His Grandfather is a crusty older herder who has to take on his education when his father is killed. He passes on his love of the land and other more formal knowledge and weapon skills.
The humans of this story are profoundly understandable with all the usual faults and virtues.
Mr Modesitt, the author of the well known Recluce saga, has turned his pen to a new world and has produced a very interesting and very believable world. The characters are all well drawn out and develop well during the course of the book.
