I am a total solitaire addict. This has been the case for a few weeks now. Every time I get on the computer my hand automatically selects the game and flicks it on. And I can't get off until I win.

Solitaire is best played on the PC. To find it, click Start, Programs, Accessories, Games, Solitaire.

The aim of the game is to get all the cards 'up'. The game starts with seven columns of cards, from 1 to 7 cards on each row, with the top cards overturned on each column. On the computer, there are 4 spaces in the top right corner of the window. Each of these is for the Ace of each suit. When the Ace is there, you can put the two on top of it, and the three, and so on until you get to the King, and when all four Kings are there, the game is won.

To help do this, you can lay cards on top of each other in their columns, but they must be alternate colours. For example, you can put a five of clubs (black) on a six of hearts (red), but not a five of hearts on a six of hearts. You can pick up entire columns of cards and move them onto another column, e.g. if you have a five, a four, and a three, you can move them all onto a six.

When a card has been moved, there will either be a unturned card there, which you can click on to turn, or a space, which you can only put a King on.

You will probably have noticed the pack, face down, on the top left of the window. When you click on it, there will be either three or one cards that are uncovered. You can use the front card to either put 'up' or bring 'down' to a column.

You can move card by either clicking and dragging them, or if you want to put a card 'up', you can double click on it.

There are a number of options you can use to change the game around to suit you. Firstly, scoring. You can choose Standard Scoring, where you get 10 points for getting a card 'up' and 5 for uncovering a new card or bringing one down. Vegas Scoring is different. You start at $-52, and for every card you put 'up' you win $5. Unfortunately, you can only run through the cards from the top left once, after which a red cross shows that you have to work with only the cards in the columns. This is a much harder version of the game. Finally, if you have no sense of competition, you can choose no scoring. Secondly, you can choose whether to draw one card or three. Arguably, drawing one is easier. When you draw three cards, three are shown. Once you move the first one to a column, you can use the second one. Vegas scoring is practically impossible one three card draw. Thirdly, you can choose to time your game. When your game is timed on Standard scoring, you lose 2 points every 10 seconds. Finally, you can choose the colour of your deck. :)

Tactics are important in Solitaire. Here are a few tips.

- If you have a choice between moving a card from a column or bringing one down, move it from the column.
- In Vegas scoring, if a two comes up in the top left and you can't put it 'up' or put it on a column, you won't win the game, so you might as well restart.
- Try to balance out the cards that you put up. If you have all the hearts up, but no clubs, then the columns will be harder to complete because you won't be able to make big columns.
- Don't be afraid to bring a card back from the Ace piles.

Thats only four hints, but you should now be able to get addicted on this infuriating game. Good luck!
