Everyone thinks Debit cards ae really pointless and a waste of time, but ill tell ou what, they really are wrong in the case of a Solo. Admitadly some Debit cards such as the Visa Electron are pointless as nowhere accepts them at all!
I got my Solo two years ago, at the age of fourteen, so at the time there was nowhere that did accept it, it is only in thelast 12 months I have noticed the places I can use it. Most of the main highstreet stores, for example OurPrice, Woolworths and WHSmith all accept he mighty Solo Debit card, along with a couple of other Debit cards.
But the advantage of having a Solo is that it is possible to use it on the internet, whereas cards such as the Electron are not accepted, due to Vias not allowing it! In fact I know two people with an Electron, and the only site they can use is streets online. Back to the main point, Solo can be used on a majority of sites including amazon.co.uk, 101cd.com, cdwow.com, play247.com and many more, in fact if I wrote them all, you would get bored very quickly! So you can do all of your internet shopping without having a Credit card, and having to go into debt!
That leads me to the next point of a Debit card in general, it is very handy knowing that you can use your card nearly everywhere you go, and you can always tell that you will not go into debt, because the idea is, that you can only spend what you have got!
I have got my Solo card issued by Natwest, and I know for a fact that Halifax also issue the cards, as for HSBC they do also! But I am not too sure about Nationwide. I know almost for certain that Lloyds TSB do not issue them(let me know if they do, and ill change it), and Barclays do not, due to them using Visa, and their Electron card!
On the whole the Solo Debit card is handy to have, you can use them in many shops, online, and you can use them not only in the 1,000,000's of cash machines in the UK, but in Europe aswell!!! So why not get down your bank and see if you can get a Solo, although using it online can get addictive,it is handy to have, it certainly gets my vote!

great op, but i remeber 3 years ago when i was travelling to Torquay i ran out of petrol in some starnge place and No petrol station accepted them then and they still dont now. My advice is as soon as you can, get a switch card. they work exactly the same as solo but loads and loads more places accept them.:0)keith

I have a Solo card too but my local branches of all the shops you mentioned don't accept it because their till machinery is not up-to-date so I guess it depends on where you live. Cheers.

HSBC issue them aswell. I have my one with Natwest, and in some ways I wish I didn't beucase I would be atleast £1000 richer if it weren't for this card!! Very useful though.
Advantages: Fairly widely accepted and you can pay for things with it Disadvantages: Marketed as idiot-proof but will allow you to go over your limit and be charged penalties
