**UPDATE 26/09/02**
It is worth saying that quite a few shops, although they don't advertise it, will actually accept Solo; Argos being an example - My three local stores do not have the symbols up, but will tell you if you ask. Another is currys.co.uk, they have the symbols up instore, but on the website have every symbol BUT Solo. So always ask instore before going to the cash machine! I do now.**
I have my Solo Card with HSBC Bank (formerly known as Midland). You can only get this card(as far as I know) with the account for 16-17 year old's.
*What is a Solo Card?*
A Solo Card is just a Debit card. It is similar to a Switch Card, except that Switch also acts as a cheque guarentee card whereas Solo does not. All you have to do to get one is open the relevant bank account (in this case: Bank account for 16-17 year old's, with HSBC).
*How do you get the account?*
Simply go to your local HSBC and ask to open a 16-17 year old's account, you will be asked to fill in an application form with all of your details.
Once this is done, you will be given either, a Shower Radio or Electronic Organiser ABSOLUTELY FREE! In approximately one week, you will receive a cheque book, paying in book and your Solo Card (all sent separately)
*Where can I use it?*
Surprisingly, quite a lot of shops accept Solo, Tesco, Morrisons, HMV, Electronics Boutique to name a few! Most shops that accept Switch, seem to accept Solo now.
A lot of online retailers also accept Solo, including: Gadgetshop.com and Dvdpopcorn.co.uk.
Also, I have had no problems getting refunds onto the card, it goes through quickly and simply.
*How is it used?*
Just as any other credit/Debit card, give it to the cashier, it is swiped, you sign the receipt, the transaction is done!(assuming you have the money in you account!)
*What exactly is a Debit card?*
With a debit card, when you make purchase with it in a shop, the money is taken out of your bank account immediately(as long as you have it in your account!) unlike a credit card where the money adds up on the card until you pay it off. So you can not spend more than you have(useful for me,lol!)
*Any other uses?*
Yes, of course. You use your Solo Card as a cash card for getting money out of cash machines. That, as far as I know is the only extra use!
*What do you think of it?*
I think it is an excellent card and bank account, since I can buy things online now (no, nothing naughty!) and dont have to carry round cash when buying things in shops. It is a really good first card and a good substitute for a credit card.
I really would reccommend this card for first time users.

I use my solo (with natwest) abroad, there is a small charge though. :) Cheers, James.

Good op but solo cards are available to younger people. I've had one since I was 14...
