I got this when I was 14 after I opened up a new account with Natwest into which my parents would pay £50 a month for me to buy clothes with. The Solo card was the big draw to Natwest because it gave you the independence and freedom of shopping with plastic without the dangers of becoming overdrawn. Unlike Switch Solo only allows you to spend money that is actually in your account so its impossible to become overdrawn. Like all other forms of plastic payment you simply sign at the till and get a separate receipt.
Not all places will accept Solo as widely as other plastic payments such as Visa but still most large chains such as Argos or JJB will take it without any problem. I once lost my wallet and as expected using the card services help line easily cancelled my card and was a sent a new one within 5 days. I use my Solo card mainly for shopping online and its really handy at Christmas when you need to buy presents for people and you don’t have to borrow their card to do it.
I would recommend Solo to anyone who wants a safe way to shop online or at most major shops and possibly to people who are worried about becoming overdrawn and falling into debt.

Advantages: Fairly widely accepted and you can pay for things with it Disadvantages: Marketed as idiot-proof but will allow you to go over your limit and be charged penalties
