a solo card is a debit card designed for 11 - 16 years old. you can use it in many shops ( i would say in my town 95% of shops take the solo card but the remaining 5% take switch also)

you can qualify for a switch when you reach the age of 16 and have a regualr income (must be paid by a company) but switch is still widely more accepted than solo but solo is accepted in lots of shops. the only thing that you cant do with a solo that you can do with a switch is guarentee cheques.

i opened my natwest account in 2004 and when i opened the account i received a solo debit card. i used my card more than using cash only because its very secure, say if you use your solo card in some shops, you might have to authorize the transaction by telephone to confirm your idenity (mostly natwest cards do this). i like it when they do this because it makes you feel very safe where you use your card.

CATCHES

i have been overdrawn many times with my solo card only because i dont allow my balance on my account to clear. so beware otherwise you will have to pay a fee of £20 - £30 per transaction.
i hope this helps, but if you want to add anything else just let me know!

I've got one but I've been using my MasterCard a lot more these days. I used to use my SOLO all the time before I got the credit card though. Never overdrawn since I always checked that cash had cleared beforehand via net banking.

Didn't think you could overdraw on a solo so that was helpful for me. Take the advice below mind. Welcome. Dave
