::::What is a Solo Card?:::: A Solo Card is a debit card available for teenagers (and adults? I think they get a Switch Card!) and is available from NatWest from the age of 11 and HSBC from the age of 13. Barclays and Halifax also offer a Visa Electron debit card, instead of solo (if your interested...).
::::How much does it cost?:::: The Solo Card is completely free. When you open a CardPlus account with NatWest when your 11 and over (or a "MySavings" account with HSBC when your aged 13).
::::What can i use it for?:::: You can use the Solo Card at LINK cash machines to check your bank account balance and top up your mobile from the cash machine. You can also use it for shopping Online and Instore! Play.com, Amazon.co.uk, MyPix.com just to name a few let you use your solo card to buy from them. And many instore shops like ASDA and HMV let you use it to buy from them.
::::Can i use it abroad?:::: You can use the Solo Card abroad, as it turns into a Maestro card. It will cost money to use it abroad though, but your bank charges you this from your account.
:::Overall:::: This card is great! It is an absoulte must have for teens, allowing you to shop online and offline, top up your mobile and use it abroad. What more could you ask for when your a teen, but control with YOUR money?
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Advantages: Fairly widely accepted and you can pay for things with it Disadvantages: Marketed as idiot-proof but will allow you to go over your limit and be charged penalties
