The book begins with John and Jill's blossoming friendship, together with some background details regarding both their careers. He is about to return home and indeed is on his way, when he is captured en route to the airport and taken hostage. The book continues with the story of his incarceration, the cruelty and torture he encountered together with one or two small acts of kindness shown to him by the occasional guard.

I'm not sure why I bought this book. I'd been swept along with the country's fascination in the most strained love story to hit the headlines for many years. If it hadn't have been for JillMorrell's desperate attempts to keep people focussed on her boyfriend's situation, I doubt that his or Brian Keenan's name would be as well known as they are now, or indeed whether they would even be alive. As it was, we got to see Jill's campaigns, felt for her and in the tradition of all good romantic tales, prayed that she would marry her prince charming when he was free.
A weighty tome, the story starts with a brief introduction to their blossoming relationship, and it's established that these are two, well-suited individuals who worked hard at the profession of journalism.

Hands up if you ever wanted to be a racing driver when you were younger? Or even if you still harbour dreams of being one? I know I certainly did. It didn't matter to me whether I was racing in rallying, Touring Cars or in Formula 1; I just wanted to be paid for driving very fast. There was a spell in my younger years where I even had a vague ambition of being a motorway policeman, for much the same reason.
Perry McCarthy had the same dream. His childhood certainly prepared him for the world of being a racing driver, as he had a daredevil streak and an eye for the ladies, even at the age of six. But this would be as close as he came to fulfilling his dream until he was 18 and had a session at Brands Hatch which proved him to be a natural driver.
From here on, Perry's life becomes a bit of a rollercoaster ride. Motor racing is ...

Manufacturer's product description
On 17 April 1986 a British television journalist was kidnapped in Beirut. His name was John McCarthy and he was to remain a hostage for the next five years. During those years he was cut off from everything and everybody he knew and loved from family friends and perhaps above all from Jill Morrell the girl he was going to marry. For five years John McCarthy had to endure the deprivation - both physical and psychological - of captivity; the filth and the squalor of the cells in which he was kept; the agony of isolation and repeated self-examination; the pain of ignorance of not knowing if those he loved even realized he was alive. For Jill Morrell the five years of John's captivity were a different kind of hell: the initial shock and disbelief; the gradual acceptance that John had been taken and that her life was changed irrevocably that all their plans had been shattered. But even as she began to pick up the threads of her life she was refusing to give up hope. For five years she battled with the mandarins of the Foreign Office; she and a group of friends launched the Friends of John McCarthy and worked ceaselessly on the behalf of all the British hostages in the Middle East until the extraordinary day in August 1991 when John McCarthy stepped down from an aeroplane at RAF Lyneham.
