Finally after a few requests over several weeks, Ciao have put this cheese into a category and I can rave about how delicious it is.
This Applewood Smoked Cheddar cheese is £1.35 from Somerfield for 150g. That works out at roughly £4 per pound, so it's quite an expensive cheese. The cheese is kept in the same aisle as the butter, milk and other packaged cheeses. It is usually available on the shelf; I've yet to have to go asking a member of staff if they have any left.
The cheese is round, quite heavy and is sealed in an air-tight plastic cover, which opens if you pull the thin cover off. It's rather difficult to close again though and the cheese then needs to be kept in a freezer bag or an air tight container or it goes hard. The "use by" date tends to be two or three months ahead, which is convenient.
What about the taste? Well, the cheese is a lovely white cheddar and as the name suggests, it has been smoked in applewood. The truckle is then rolled in mild paprika, which turns the outside a lovely red/brown colour. It tastes smoked but doesn't have a burnt aftertaste. The paprika is delicious as well. The cheddar itself has that mild, white cheddar taste which is complimented by being smoked.
The cheese is rather soft, which makes it difficult for grating and the paprika tends to get all over your hands. Slicing the cheese is better but the round shape makes it quite difficult. However, that doesn't matter really, depending what you want it for. I often have it with toast or for cheese and pickle sandwiches. It is delicious with pasta as well. It makes a nice change to ordinary cheddar.
For the price of the truckle, there could be a bit more cheese in but it's so nice that I buy it rather a lot. It has been on offer in the past for 99p.
Applewood can be bought at other places, fresh from the deli but I prefer this pre-packaged version.
