"No Script! Very Funny! How will it end?"

Michael and Joanne

Michael and Joanne

Confetti, 2006, Rating 15, Running time 100 Min

I love this film! It is brilliant! The concept was given to the actors and they just improvised the whole thing, no scripts just completely off the cuff and it works to well. I also love the fact that it is a British film with British actors showing exactly how talented they really are.

The concept and direction for this film came from Debbie Isitt who has also written and directed Nasty Neighbours 2000.

The Story

Confetti magazine have teamed up with a TV station to look for a new feature, they decide to interview couples to try and find the most original idea for a wedding. If selected they will pay for the wedding, give them front page coverage and a free house.

Three couples are selected to compete against each other, Matt (Martin Freeman) and Sam (Jessica Stevenson), the 'Musical Couple', Michael (Robert Webb) and Joanne (Olivia Coleman) the 'Naturist Couple' and Josef (Stephen Mangan) and Isabelle (Meredith McNeil) the 'Tennis Couple'.

Wedding Planners Archie (Vincent Franklin) and Gregory (Jason Watkins) are given just a few weeks to put together all three weddings.

At the end their can only be one winner, but just how much of their special day are the couples prepared to surrender in order to win?

My thoughts

I love improvisation, it can take you anywhere and that's exactly what happens in this film, the story's become to real because the actors are not restricted by scripts. You never know what is going to happen next, and emotions are all over the place because they are able to really run away with the characters they are portraying.
The acting is amazing in this film, they have all personified the characters they were given beautifully, they are very believable because they are off script and running on high emotion.
The couples are all great, I love the random ideas the have come up with for the weddings, I have to say I was a little shocked by the amount of flesh shown in this film thanks the idea for a naturist wedding! Bits flying all over the place so if you are faint hearted you have been warned!

Characters and Actors

Matt and Sam are a quite couple who long to get married in the style of a 1940's musical, Sam has always been in the shadow of her sister who is a professional dancer on the cruise ships. Sam sees this as her time to shine on the stage. The relationship between Sam and Matt is very loving, they really go well together, and both have some very emotional scenes that will bring you close to tears.
Martin Freeman and Jessica Stevenson are totally believable and are clearly very talented actors who do not get enough recognition. They are complimented by Sam's mother played by the talented Alison Steadman and Sam's sister played by Sarah Hadland. Alison is no stranger to this way of working having worked closely with Mike Leigh in the past, Mike Leigh is known for using Improvisation in his films Abigail's Party and Secrets and Lies.

Joanne and Michael are the naturist couple, they would like a naturist wedding which is certainly original but not so great for the front of a magazine.
Michael has always been a naturist were as for Joanne it is all new, they are happy to get their clothes off, but not so happy when the wedding planners tell them to put them back on. Also Joanne has some conflict with her mother who does not really agree with what they are doing.
This couple have the hardest time, their beliefs are totally undermined and they have a big fight on their hands to get the wedding that they want.
Robert Webb & Olivia Coleman are both very brave, they spend majority of this film in the nude and we get to see everything that Robert has to other! They have both worked together before in The Peep Show 2005.

Josef and Isabelle are a very competitive couple, they like nothing better than to win, win, win! They have decide of a Tennis theme for their wedding, but for them it is more about the winning than the wedding that makes them want to take part.
Josef is not a very popular man and has no real friends, Isabelle is from Canada and has no family to attend the wedding. The only other person in their life is their tennis coach, and this causes issues between them as Josef is jealous of the attention he pays Isabelle.
Stephen Mangan & Meredith McNeil really work well together, Meredith is not as experienced as Stephen with regards to film , but she certainly does a good job.

The Wedding Planners Archie and Gregory help bring the film together nicely, they are partners in life as well as in work and not only do we see their relationships develop with the couples but with each other.
Used to having big budgets to play with Archie and Gregory have a challenge on their hands, three different weddings all in one venue, and very little time to put the whole thing together.
Vincent Franklin & Alan Watkins are the glue that holds this film together, they make a brilliant comedy duo of screen, and a lovely couple!

Manufacturer's product description

An improvised mockumentary comedy that sees three couples attempt to win a magazine competition to find the 'Most Original Wedding of the Year'. After the wedding competition is set up by the owner of Confetti magazine - played by the comedian Jimmy Carr, three couples are chosen to compete in the finals and the film charts their progress as they attempt to win their dream marriage. Couple one--comprised of Martin Freeman (THE OFFICE) and Jessica Stevenson (SPACED)--intend to have a musical wedding. Couple two--comprised of the PEEPSHOW duo Robert Webb and Olivia Coleman--are nudists. The third couple of Stephen Mangan (GREEN WING) and Meredith MacNeill (MAN STROKE WOMAN) are obsessed with tennis. This entertaining comedy is notable for its mockumentary style and use of improvised dialogue, a device used by Christopher Guest in the films THIS IS SPINAL TAP and BEST IN SHOW. The film features appearances by several actors familiar from British comedies, such as Felicity Montagu (I'M ALAN PARTRIDGE) and Julia Davis (NIGHTY NIGHT). This frequently amusing, breezy film is a romantic comedy that manages to bring new dimensions to the genre and the use of improvised dialogue adds a freshness to it. Relying on sharp character humour, CONFETTI manages to combine its spoof documentary style and use of a traditional British romantic comedy narrative successfully.
