You've guessed it:Sonicis Back. This time it's with the Sega Dreamcast and in full Technicolor. With a new lease of life, new friends and new baddies, Sonic has certainly got his work cut out for him--in a breezy, buzzing world that shows the transfer of an old game to a new console needn't be limp. Now we are granted shots of Sonic running at high speed, the calming ocean in the background and other graphical niceties. There are times when you have to be precise with the position of Sonic, and after bouncing your way through numerous trampolines this it can be annoying. Still, every time our little friend turns and waves everything just seems all right. This game ranks with other titles in the genre. If you're a Sonic fan, but never got around to getting this title for your collection then it certainly is a must. If however you are a slightly less devoted Sega fan, then perhaps other titles such asRayman 2that have moved the genre are most appropriate. This said, aSega consolewithout Sonic the Hedgehog is like a fish without a bicycle. --Stuart Miles

cracking game. And withSonic Adventure 2, Sega have concocted the kind of bright, fast-paced arcade game that makes you realise why their infamous blue hedgehog has endured for so long.Wisely rejecting the adventure element of the originalSonic Adventurein favour of a more action-packed game, his latest outing sees Sonic fighting the usual array of evil foes--with the addition of a few new faces. It's all an excuse for zooming through levels, grinding along barriers, skating down hills and collecting lots of rings, of course, with a fearsome selection of baddies to conquer along the way. It's also the kind of game Sega make best--incredibly simple to pick up and play, and yet far more difficult to put down afterwards. Commendably, there's no raft of instructions to wade through--this really is a game you can be playing confidently within minutes of putting it in your Dreamcast. Make no mistake though, the further you get, the greater the challenge becomes--and you won't be completing this one in a night. If you're looking for proof that the Dreamcast is still attracting quality titles, you should be calling Sonic as your first witness. --Simon Brew

course, describing it thus doesn't exactly put it up against much in the way of stiff competition, but whether we're damning it with faint praise or notSonic Adventure DXis still as good as polygonal Sonic action has ever got. Originally a Dreamcast launch title, this update sees Sonic and five of his chums yet again attempting to reclaim chaos emeralds from the evil Dr Robotnik.Despite claims of improved graphics, this still looks very much like a Dreamcast game. Sega have added new lighting and a few other special effects but unfortunately the frame rate and draw distance are all distinctly 1998. Most irritatingly, the camera still hasn't been sorted out; this really does impact on the enjoyment to be had in the otherwise well-designed action levels.Indeed, as a so-called "director's cut" this is a bit of a failure--except when it comes to the hidden extras, which include over 60 bonus games and all 12 Sonic titles for the Game Gear (Sega's powerful but short-lived answer to the Game Boy). The fact that it's so time-consuming to unlock most of these extras is highly frustrating and means that only hardcore Sonic fans are going to get the best out of a re-release that has missed opportunities. --David Jenkins

Sonic was relaxing in a hotel in Station Square. It was a quiet day – the sun was shining and the beach sand was a brilliant white. Yet out of nowhere, a plane appears! Sonic instantly recognises this as Tails, his two-tailed fox friend. Yet not all appears well – Tails is thrashing with the controls! He takes a left, a right, and a nosedive! CRASH! Sonic ventures off to find his friend…
After participating through the first level, Sonic eventually reaches Tails and the crashed wreckage of the plane – Tails now becomes a playable character. Each of the other characters – Amy, Knuckles, E-102 Gamma and Big the Cat – are unlocked like this, creating multiple angles to look at the storylines. Sonic inevitably has the most stages and probably the best mini-games. Each character also comes with special items needed to complete the stages – like Sonic’s wristband that lets him follow a series of rings and E-102 Gamma’s jet pack that lets s/he float down to the ground.
Each stage carries a grade – C, B and A. When you first compete in the stage, the aim is to get the ‘C’ ranking. If achieved, you can re-enter the stage in game or through trial mode (see below) to attempt the next ranking. The fruits of your exploits? Sonic Emblems – this is how you can monitor how well you fare against other people. I think that if you achieve every single emblem something special happens, but I can’t do it yet! And in each mini-game there are two emblems to collect as well – achieve a high score or low time to win them. The various mini-games include fishing, driving and snowboarding with a panache of flying.
Each stage is individual (even though some characters do the same stages), with some containing the enemies that we see frequently from the Sonic games, some with those funny bouncy things, and even two pinball tables – one with the one-armed bandit like in the casino stage on Sonic 2 and the other similar to poker.
There is one other mini-games to test yourself with – Chao racing. The technique is one similar to a tamagotchi, but in some aspects completely different. In SA, there are three ‘Chao gardens’, each with fruit to feed your chao – this raises their statistics. If you give them animals collected from the stages, it transforms not only their appearance, but also the distribution of abilities. You can download a chao onto your VM (Visual Memory, the Dreamcast memory card) and raise it that way as well. TO test your Chao, pit it in a race against computer controlled chao or your friend’s chao on one of three increasingly difficult courses. Win in a certain time and receive special items. Although your Chao never dies, I couldn’t be bothered to raise one because my VM batteries run out!
My favourite aspect(s) of the game – in the casinopolis stage there are mini versions of pinball-style quests. One quest involves a slot machine (like the casino levels of the original sonic games) and the other involves poker (?!). If you fail top get 100 rings in 3 (pin)balls then you get chucked into the sewers. My other favourite is Big the Cat fishing – at times it can be easy to play but difficult to master.
Although I haven’t completed the game yet (stuck on Knuckles and the forest statues – help anyone?), I felt compelled to write an opinion on such a brilliant game. The graphics, like the Dreamcast, are top notch and flow without any trouble whatsoever. The sound is classic Sonic music that is never boring, so that’s cool.
Although I hate to end on a bad note, there is one crippling factor to SA – its camera. Every so often it moves into a very annoying position that means that you die, no matter what direction you press, because the camera is stuck behind the scenery.
Overall, a stunning effort from Sega – and now I have to convince my friend to let me borrow Sonic Adventure 2!
Advantages:
New angle on Sonic More than just Sonic, Tales and Knuckles Varying levels of difficulty
Advantages: play as six different charecters Disadvantages: egg man is back
This game is fast. Sonic games have always been about speed and in Sonic Adventure the blue hedgehog is faster than ever. If you have already played the previous Sonic titles on the Megadrive then the gameplay will be instantaneously recognisable except that the action now takes place in a wonderfully detailed 3D world. The twists and loop-the-loops are still here and sonic goes even faster around and through them. Sonic’s new world is lavish, ... ...in the future. Sonic is not alone, he now has a whole host of friends to help in his quest and each one of these is playable. Tails and Knuckles return from previous games and there are also new characters in the form of Amy (the love interest), Big the Cat and E-102. Having multiple characters to control at different parts of the game adds greatly to the variety of gameplay, especially as they are each so different. There are also sub-games dotted ...

...a game. It received Sonic Adventure from creator Yuji Naka. This was one of the most anticipated games of all time. The only time the multi-million selling hero, Sonic, had ever received a 3D treatment was in the Saturn games `Sonic R` and `Sonic Jam` but neither of these games were proper plat-formers and on a 32 bit system, although still better than the aging playstation, Sonic's speed could not be justified.
When the Dreamcast was announced, ... ...a fully 3D sonic world in which our hero, sonic, could travel around many places, desserts, snow, mountains and even over oceans of some sort. Nobody was prepared for the video that leaked out of Sega’s offices months later. It showed Sonic flying around at incredible speeds through a city landscape. The detail was amazing and the speed was breath taking. Everyone wanted to know about this game and it sold dreamcasts quickly upon the release ...

sonic has been missed and why not the games that appeared on the master system, mastersystem2 and megadrive where no less than outstanding, only now do we get a chance to seen what all the fuss was about. Sonic is now in 3D and for the first time it is a full game. The graphics shine in 3D and the first thing that really hits you about the game is that the speed is unbelievable and it takes quite a while to get used to. The game is enormous and has ...

...be said about us loyal Sonic Team fans. We're obsessed. Yuji and the boys could publish a blank disc and we would flock to buy it. Basically, they've never put a foot wrong. From 1991 with the advent of Sonic the Hedgehog to the wonders of NiGHTS, there's something that Sonic Team does that makes their games special.
When 1998 arrived, along with the announcement of Dremacast, Sonic Team announced that their mascot would also return. Now Sonic Team ... ...little bit special.
Of course, Sonic was taken back to the drawing board and renovated, to try and shift off the 'culldy' status he seemed to be gaining recently. I mean we have all seen the scary eyes poster, heven't we? Scared me witless. Anyway, Sonic was back, looking more fresh, and a little older, and ready to kick butt in all-new 128-bit glory.
So, onto the game. I remember October 14th so well, when i plugged in my DC, inserted the disc ...

...2' game, I found other Sonic games rather disappointing, as they weren't fast enough. The awful Sonic 3D was useless. I think that Sonic Adventure comes the closest of all the Sonic sequels to recapturing the camaraderie of Sonic 2.
This is for a number of reasons. For a start, the game has superb 3D graphics and images, and the game moves along very quickly - Sonic runs faster, and there are the old familiar Sonic looping special effects, albeit ... ...making it unique in the Sonic range, as it requires you to think rather than just run as fast as Sonic will go. This fortunately does not interrupt the fluidity of the gameplay. Perhaps the game's biggest flaw is its difficulty. Sonic was basically a run jump and win game; it was never designed to be compatible with the role playing or puzzle scenario. The game is considerably more difficult than other Sonic games in that it is more difficult to ...

After my SonicAdventure review, I had started to anticipete the arrival of the inevitable sequel. I got the chance to play the demo a few months later, and it blew me away. then, on the 23rd of June 2001, 10 years after the release of the first Sonic the Hedgehog game, my special package arrived. My preciaous SonicAdventure 2 was shoved straight into my Dreamcast, and that was the last anyone saw of me for the next week.
OK, so lets just get to the girt. whe nI first started playing, I thought "WOW!!" The graphics have been seriously improved since the original, the chartacter's mouths now move a lot smoother and the whole gang look a lot more cartoony. The animation is just supurb, the Dreamcast has gone all oput on this one and sonic Team have really pushed the machine to the limit. One thing that you will notice is the speed. Here ...
Advantages: Fast, furious gameplay. Less adventuring Disadvantages: Can be repetative
When the world was young and gaming was still 8-bit, two games characters ruled the world of consoles. Mario was the spokesman for Nintendo, the plumber with a per chant for mushrooms and dislike of turtles. Sega needed a rival and thus was created Sonic the Hedgehog. For a hedgehog, he was rather blue and had the ability to run at amazing speeds. Being a teenager, he also had a lot of attitude.
Travelling through time ten years, to present day, we encounter the latest in the long line of Sonic games, as the hedgehog with attitude shatters our TV screens in SonicAdventure 2. Trying to beat the first Dreamcast outing was no mean feat, but creators Sonic Team have managed to put together an amazing game yet again.
The storyline unfolds as you play and we find our Sonic escaping from a military helicopter, ending up riding ...
Advantages: Great gameplay, which is fast and fun. Awesome grpahics and fun levels. Disadvantages: Might be two short and not and much will to play.
When Sonicadventure came out for the Dreamcast and everyone’s jaw dropped at the stunning visuals and extremely attractive over all play of the game and no one thought this kind of game with Sonic is could be matched. When the first Sonic demo came out with… PSO and we all saw how stunning the second looked the publics mind switched to this exciting sequel. With more characters and mini games to play who could fall in love with SonicAdventure 2?
The plot in this game is… a funny one to say the least but it does make for some great levels and enjoyment for the gamer. So here we go… Dr Robotnik (or Dr Eggman as he is now known) is back up to his old tricks again with that whole ‘world domination’ thing going on but he stumbles across a sonic look-alike. This mysterious hedgehog (Shadow) claims ...
