This is a tremendous toothbrush, I’ve always looked after my teeth and only have 2 fillings, even so during my 6 monthly dental checkups I’ve frequently ended up having a scale and polish which I must admit I hate. My first electric toothbrush was a battery powered Braun which was a simple brush and quite good at what it did but eventually I upgraded to this.

Phillips Product Description --------------------------------------- “Experience a dynamic difference with the Sonicare Elite electric toothbrush. Taking patented sonic technology to a higher level, this fantastic toothbrush combines high-speed bristle motion and dynamic, fluid cleaning action for an exceptionally thorough clean. The Sonicare Elite HX7351 brings together Philips' patented sonic technology with a next-generation design including a slim, angled neck, tapered brush head and contour-fit bristles to provide thorough and more comfortable cleaning, especially in hard-to-reach areas. In an improvement on previous Sonicare models, the handle is lighter and smaller with a tapered design to improve both comfort and manoeuvrability”
This is an expensive toothbrush so I will explain why I would recommend it:
To increase the comfort of using the brush it has built-in easy-start programme, this gently increases the power levels gradually over the first 14 times you use the brush. This is to give you time to adapt to the increased power and sensation of brushing with the Sonicare. It wasn’t too bad for me, previously using a powered brush, but I would imagine if you changed from a manual toothbrush to one of these you might find it uncomfortable.
I don’t quite know what they mean by sonic technology .they describe it in the literature as “Sonicare's patented sonic technology combines high-frequency brushing with wide sweeping motion to create fluid forces. This dynamic fluid action effectively removes plaque, improves gingival health and naturally whitens teeth.” The brush head though does oscillate at a very fast speed
It comes with an automatic timer so you brush for 2 minutes; this is the amount of time recommended by dentists as being the optimum compromise between cleaning teeth and damaging enamel. It has what is called a quad pacer… this divides the 2 minutes into 30 second intervals, one for each quadrant of your mouth, upper right, lower right, upper left and lower left. 30 seconds is perfectly adequate with this brush to do the front back and top surface of your teeth. It beeps at you and pauses for a second at the end of each 30 second interval so you don’t forget and have time to move on.
It has a combination of bristle lengths with the longest being on the outer edge of the brush head. These long bristles ensure the brush cleans into any gaps or dips. Its also quite soft so it doesn’t hurt your gums. The head is quite compact and the upper part of the brush is quite slender so it’s easy to get right round the back of your teeth.
The brush feels good to hold. The handle is of a good size and it fits comfortably in large and small hands. And as I said previously it has a very slim and angled neck so your mouth doesn’t feel full of toothbrush. The brush is also quite light, not weighing that much more than an ordinary toothbrush. The base unit has an extra head holder so you can share the brush unit with your other half.
It comes with a recharging station, which the brush just sits in. When the battery is low thee light display is a blinking yellow and this changes to a steady green when it’s fully charged. The indicator in the handle glows when it needs a charge and the rechargeable battery gives around two weeks of brushing twice a day between charges.
It is guaranteed for 2 years and comes with a 28 day return policy if you don’t like the brush. A new battery unit is available from Phillips and this is much less than replacing the brush with a new one and this is worth knowing as the battery unit only lasts around 2 years. The brush heads should be changed around every 6 months and are approx £20 for a pair.
Since I’ve been using the brush I still visit the dentist on a 6 monthly basis but have never had a scrape or polish as my teeth don’t need it. Your mouth always feels really fresh and clean and it improves the look of your teeth. Coffee stains and such don’t stand a chance neither does food debris as it gets rid of it all even after difficult foods such as spare ribs bits and raspberry seeds !

...the most basic of the Sonicare range but, as far as I am concerned, is more than adequate to do an excellent job. For the first few times you use it, the in-built 'easy start' programme gradually increases the intensity of the brushing action over the first 14 times of use so that by the end of this time, your brush is operating at full capacity. This means that you have the chance to get used to the sensation of using an electric toothbrush at a ... ...course they do).
The Sonicare HX5451 has a 4 x 30 second programme where the brush gives a small bleep and pauses momentarily so you can move the brush to the next quadrant in your mouth. This is intended for you to give your mouth an even cleaning, as we all tend to miss certain key areas when brushing our teeth. I have to say that after the initial novelty of going along with this, I now move the brush aorund my mouth throughout the time period ...

Advantages: Cleans well, promotes dental health, quiet and ergonomic Disadvantages: High purchase price, awkward angles at first
I bought the Sonicare after considerable online research, intending to upgrade from the Braun 3D rechargeable pulse rotation toothbrush.
The research I referred to was mostly online, and related to various clinical studies comparing different toothbrushes, and how effective they are for whitening teeth, and aiding gum health.
I based my decision on clinical studies that I have read, indicating that there is a significant difference on the gum health ... ...me that he uses the Sonicare himself, which swayed my decision.
And ...it is very good. Comparing it to the Braun, I'd have to say that my teeth do feel cleaner, and my gums appear healthier than when using the Braun - although the difference isn't all that earth shattering.
The Sonicare is much quieter than the Braun rotating head models. It also does require some getting used to, especially figuring out the right moves to make sure you clean ...
