Sons of Destiny is written by Darren Shan, an author widely believed to be the best children's horror writer ever, and one of the best writers for children in any category around at the moment. The book is part of a series called The Darren Shan saga, in which a teenage boy has his life changed forever when after attending an illegal freak show, he steals an amazing spider, which belongs to a real-life vampire, Mr. Crepsley. When his friend gets bitten by this spider, he is forced to trade the rest of his life so that his friend can continue his, when he agrees to fake his own death, flee from his family and become a half-vampire in order to get the cure for the bite for his friend. In order to save lives, Darren and Mr. Crepsley kill a mad vampaneze (the vampaneze are blood cousins and sworn enemies to the vampires, as they kill victims when they take blood from them). They then travel to the Vampire Mountain to atone for their actions. The Vampire Princes decide that Darren has to complete some Trials in order to prove his worthiness as a Vampire, as he has been blooded whilst he is too young by Mr. Crepsley. He fails one of these trials, and is sentenced to death, but he flees his fate. Whilst roaming the caves trying to escape, he discovers a plot to seize Vampire Mountain by the Vampaneze. His information helps the Vampires survive the attack and win the battle. Facing his impending execution, Darren is spared in the only way possible, he is made a Vampire Prince. For the next few years he hunts down the Vampaneze Lord, prophecised by an evil meddler in time, Mr. Tiny, to bring down the Vampire Clan. He goes to try and kill this Vampaneze Lord, along with Mr. Crepsley and Vancha March, another Vampire Prince, as Mr. Tiny says that these are the only people who can kill the Vampaneze Lord. Sons of Destiny focuses on the battle between Darren and the Vampaneze Lord, and what happens after. Without wanting to give anything away, it has a 'Marmite' ending (you either love it or you hate it!) With a twist and turn on every page, this makes for a must-have in any teenager from the age of 11 onwards book collection. It's a thrilling end to a groundbreaking series, and for it's cheap price, it should be a definite purchase.
