Overall user rating Sony CDXMP40 10 reviews | Write a review

For MP3 lovers, Sony presents the CDX-MP40 CD receiver. Record your MP3 files onto a CD-R or CD-RW and slide in the disc. Flip up the faceplate, and the song titles and other text...

Your MP3s will sound great when powered by Sony's beefy internal amp (23.2 watts RMS/50 peak x 4). Seven preset EQ curves give you quick sound control to help sculpt the music to your liking. If your speakers are low in the doors, you'll love the Dynamic Soundstage Organizer. It makes the music sound like it's all around you instead of at your ankles. Tired of hearing the same handful of songs on the local radio stations? For astounding musical variety, add Sony's 10-disc MP3 changer or XM Satellite Radio tuner (antenna and XM service also required). Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO) uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and higher soundstage. You can store the DSO setting for each source.

Good power head unit if you just want direct replacement for OEM unit, custom fit speakers will be needed to appreciate sound quality in some cars. MP3 quality is good with head unit output but audiophiles should know amplification shows up its weaknesses, although standard CD audio doesn't suffer this problem. Good expandable qualities with 2 sets of RCA's and socket for Sony column joystick (which I have fitted).
As a personal preference a full set of Infinity Kappa's really do this head unit justice and will reproduce the full range of music the Sony is capable of outputting. A lot of car manufacturers now fit outstanding speakers as standard so my preference may not be needed.
Product spec as follows
CD/MP3/Radio with 50W x 4 High Power Output
CD-R & CD-RW & MP3 Playback Compatible
RDS
CD/MD Changer Control
2 RCA Pre-outs for connection of External Amplifiers (Front & Rear)
CD Text
Custom File CD
MBP (My Best Position)
Removable Front Panel
Red Button Illumination

Overall a good CD/MP3 player.
