Advantages: Beautiful, well designed, excellent remote, battery life, features, outputs Disadvantages: Horrid software, "spin up" time in atrac/mp3 playback could have been better avoided
..."next track" button, and so Sony supplied an excellent lcd stick remote control. It allows you to do everything you'd want with volume controls, navigation (track and album), play, pause, stop, display (track/album/artist/times), play mode (shuffle/album shuffle etc), and sound mode (standard/megabass1/2). You rightly expect something special from Sony's "flagship" CD player, after all they more or less invented the whole portable audio player market single-handedly.
The D-NE1 certainly looks the part, consisting of brushed aluminium top panels with transparent plastic surround so you can see your cd spinning merrily, and all the various sockets and buttons discreetly placed round the outer edge of the unit.
It's also small - only slightly wider in diameter than a cd, and less than 2cm thick.
It's multi-format playback supports standard cd audio (unsurprisingly!), but also mp3, ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus formats.
You'll already be familiar with standard cd and mp3, but the ATRAC formats might be new to you - basically they are Sony's own take on audio compression algorithms, but they claim to provide higher quality at lower bit-rates, enabling you to store much more audio than if it were in the mp3 format.
The difference in ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus is small (slightly better quality/speed of encoding) but obviously it's best if your CD player supports the latest version.
At it's simplest you can take all your mp3 files and burn them onto a CD and your player will happily read through the various folders, display tracknames/artists/album etc, but to get the most from the unit you really want to use the supplied software to create an ATRAC cd, but unfortunately this is where the first weakness arises too:
To create an ATRAC CD, basically you go through your CD's/MP3 albums and import them into Sonicstage SimpleBurner, a hideous piece of poorly designed software if ever there was one. If you go through the lengthy process of importing your music into the software (waiting for it to be converted to the ATRAC3 format), but have a problem when you come to the final stage of actually burning the cd and it fails, there is no way of saving what you've already imported, and so you have to start from scratch. This might sound annoying until you actually have to do it yourself, at which point you realise that it is *incredibly* annoying!
Instead, I strongly advise you to install SonicStage 2.3 (simpleburners "big brother") - it's more like itunes in that it allows you to import all your music into a central database, which is stored and persistent so no more re-importing the same music over and over again every time you start the program! Using SonicStage is actually quite nice, it looks good and actually works! I created my first cd with no problems, containing 371 songs, that's 28 albums!
Whilst the buttons on the player are nicely placed, it's a pain to have to open your bag or case to find the "next track" button, and so Sony supplied an excellent lcd stick remote control. It allows you to do everything you'd want with volume controls, navigation (track and album), play, pause, stop, display (track/album/artist/times), play mode (shuffle/album shuffle etc), and sound mode (standard/megabass1/2). It also features a natty little lcd screen that is backlit which is great as you know what it's doing at a glance, as well as showing you what album/song you are listening to.
The unit takes 2 "chewing gum stick" batteries (they look like sticks of chewing gum! They cost a tenner each if you ever need to replace them, but they will last for ages and ages (mine are over a year old and are fine - I've been listening to this cd on and off for 2 days solid while at work and it still shows full battery). You sit the player on the supplied (very pretty) docking station and the charge led lights up, 7 hours later and you're all set for about 55 hours of continous music! You can also plug in the supplied extra battery holder which takes 2 AA batteries (in fact you can even run from both supplies - internal rechargable and external AA for huge playtimes!) ATRAC discs allow the player to last longest off a charge as the cd only spins up briefly at the track start while it reads in the song before stopping the motor (this also means your track can't skip as it's not been read from the CD!)
The player features G Protection anti-shock which is supposed to help prevent skipping from shakes and bangs, which works very well in practice. It has two settings, but nowhere actually describes what the difference in the two settings are, apart from level 2 gives you slightly better protection (no idea how - but I'm interested in finding out!)
There is also a shared line-out and optical-out socket so there's no problem connecting it to other systems.
The only other downside to the player (apart from the nasty simpleburner software which you can easily get round by using sonicstage) is from the fact that during ATRAC/MP3 disc playback, the song is read into memory, the disc is stopped (to save battery) and then at the song end, the cd spins up and the next song is read in. This unfortunately introduces a couple of seconds gap between each song. This isn't too bad on most albums, but if you listening to a mix album, or two songs that mix into one another (eg: most chemical brothers albums), then you hear the next song about to kick in, then it goes silent, 2 seconds later the song continues. It gets a bit annoying, and makes me wonder if Sony couldn't have designed it slightly better so that the next song was read in just *before* the last song ended to ensure no unnecessary pauses. The advantages (huge playtime and battery life) probably outweigh the disadvantages though, but if it had read in the next song before the last song ended it would have been an absolutely superb system.
All in all, a well rounded (haha) player with excellent features, brilliant usability with ease of access to all the controls, amazing sound and storage, looks, and build quality. Buy one now!
...I had owned a Sony Minidisc player for about 2 years, and had become fed up with having to change the Minidisc every so often (yes I'm very lazy!) and it had become broken and did not want to send it of to the manufacturers to mend it which would have been very costly.
A CD Mp3 player can store up to 30 albums onto one CD. This is very handy and by far easier than my previous Minidisc player is. This CD player comes with 2x AA alkaline rechargeable ... ...With the majority of sony headphones you get with portable audio products they give you a shoddy pair. Again they've done this but hey are really not as bad as people make them out to be. I already have a nice expensive pair, which I really like so I don't use this much but I've had no problem. They fit in my ears, produce good sound quality and are comfortable which is all that matters. Dimensions (WxDxH): 13.5 cm x 13.5 cm x 1.6 cm Weight: 179 ...

Advantages: very compact, batteries last forever Disadvantages: poor software supplied
...The remote is the standard Sony one, so it's easy to use (although it could show more information) and has a backlight. The earphones aren't the best but work well, especially if you get some foam covers for them (to improve the bass). It is slightly noisy when skipping tracks, but if you have the earphones in you won't notice. One problem it does have is that in mp3 mode it always inserts a slight pause between tracks, so mixes always get cut up ... ...mp3 disc or 25 if you use the atrac (Sony compression) software which comes with this - be warned though, it takes ages to make an atrac cd and you can't play it on anything else! You need a CD writer to make these (obviously), and a powerful pc if you want to covert to atrac.
The sound quality on CDs, mp3s and atrac discs is excellent, unless you choose to convert mp3s on your computer to atrac. For some reason, you lose nearly all the quality ...

Advantages: Nice and slim and very slick looking. Disadvantages: None
I’ve had this Walkman for about 6 months and i’m really happy with it. It has great sound quality and some very good features.
The sound settings are really good. There are 3 base settings and they enhance the sound really well. Other features include bookmark settings; favourite tracks can be set so that you don’t have to keep skipping tracks and a very good LCD remote.
When I bought my Walkman I had to pay £149 so I am very unhappy to see this ... ...every penny.
This Walkman is also an mp3 and software is provided in the box. This is really a great mp3 and you can record up to 30 albums on just one disc. This is good also because you can add to it but you cannot delete any of the tracks on the already on the CD but that’s ok because you can put so much on them.
The remote is really easy to control and it has a very nice light. It also clips on to like your pockets and is never in the way. ...

Advantages: Good Value for money, Easy To Use Disadvantages: A bit on the big side for me.
When i seen this player in the shop the first impression i got was Round, saucer like and easy to hold. I found it had Good sound especially with good head phones. The battery life is very strong compared to other players i have come accross. Line out for connecting to speakers. mp3 or atrac playback includes the folder system, easier to navigate through 100-200 songs on each cd. Can group songs in folders when you burn them so you dont have to hit track advance 150 times if you want to hear the 150th song. Good for old format old time radio plays. It plays the low grade mp3 kbs/s and frequences as well of course the standard new music high quality format. ...
Advantages: Sleek, slender, small weight and a stylish design Disadvantages: Quite low battery life
When the Walkman was first released the whole world dropped thier jaws and let out a amazed oooing sound... it is even said the the advertising copyrighter that made up the slogan "Don't run, walk man" was able to retire on that sentence alone. But in the technological age we live this product won't be able to turn many heads.
The sony D-NE511/S comes with power compression software which allows you to put up to 30 CD's onto one CD and play it through your D-NE511/S. The missing word in that sentence is ONLY...these compressed CD's can only be played through sony walkmans with ATRAC recording technology which makes it hard if you want to share your newly created mixes with friends. The same software also lets you make CD's containing loads of mp3 files (not sure on a certain number as i have never had enough mp3 files to push ...
