I bought this new sony D-NE 511 just for the list of functionalities it provided and the sound quality of sony is trusted. I'm writing this review after 2 months of purchase. It can play audio cds(cd-r,cd rw), mp3 files and atrac3 plus format files. Atrac 3 plus is a audio compression technology that preserves the high quality of songs even at higher compression rates. Ths standard box comes with the cd player, a headphone, user manuals and a software cd. Below is some detailed info about the player.
Player design It has many useful control features unlike other
mp3 players in the market. Regarding the design of the player, it is quite convenient to hold the player or even a hand strap can be attached in the strap holes provided. The piece I bought was silvery in color and had a small lcd display on the top with 2 line display. Other buttons are also conveniently placed and the volume bar is similar to other cd players at the left side of the player. It has a 4way key that provides the play, stop, next and previous track functions. It has a jog dial similar to conventional volume control which provides viewing the tracks of the cd. A sliding hold button is provided on the bottom to prevent to accidental pressing of any buttons. The player can be also run with an external power input. The battery compartment is inside the player i.e. inside the lid. Also present inside is the g-protection switch.
Player Details The display is a grey scale lcd with many indicators. The type of cd, battery life, name of the track, time played, bass level and many other information is shown on the lcd. You really need to explore out the various functionalities. There are different play modes like shuffle, repeat and bookmark mode. The display button shows the tracks id3 tag information and reverse countdown. The folder level buttons let you jump to the next or previous folder in case of mp3 and atrac cds. The jog dial lets you to browse and view the songs of the current folder. This feature is similar to other mp3 players as only the first few letters are visible and it is difficult to know which song it is. The player lacks an equalizer but there is a bass control button with 2 levels of bass. The 1st level of bass is a hearing pleasure while 2nd level makes the clarity of the songs a bit less. What they could have done is to include a equalizer that sounds much better. The 4way key includes the play/pause, stop, forward and reverse functions and is very convenient to use. The hold button locks the control and no buttons function while the button is slided to hold position.
Features Bookmarking is another interesting feature which is very convenient to play selected songs. Bookmarking can be done easily by pressing the play button for 3 seconds during playback. This is one of the features I liked because its good when you don't want to listen to all songs on a cd and its easy. Regarding the headphones supplied, the sound quality is quite good. But the maximum sound audible is not that high that actually gives the impulse of music. Battery life is what you look for when you go for any electronics. My player gave a life of more than 70 hours with 2 AA batteries. The g-protection feature made no difference to me when set in any of the two modes as I never felt the tracks skipping even when I was jogging or walking. Software for converting audio cds and mp3 to atrac3 is supplied with the standard box. Although this software takes nearly a hour to create an atrac cd, you get a cd with around 250 tracks i.e. more than enough even for a long journey. What was lacking is the software to play atrac cds on a computer because without the player, those atrac cds are a scrap. The user manual is damn easy to understand and you hardly need it because it is very easy to use this player.
Overall, I suggest this product is a good buy, but comes at a price(in India,its Rs.7500) higher than other manufacturers. If you are looking for a mp3 cd player, this one's got a lot of features and is one of the good ones available now.
