I began this summer holiday with the intent to become more organised by the end of it and to help me deal with the masses of scheduled appointments that I will expect to have to deal with by the beginning of the next working year. My first purchase was a new mobile phone - the ericsson t68i. With calendar and alarm capabilities I felt this may cater for my needs. However, due to the laborious tapping necessary to manoevure through the menus I felt I needed something a little more comfortable to use. So I did my research on PDAs, pretty much like you are probably doing now. Finally, I decided to go with one of Sony's top of the range PDAs - the Sony Clie PEG-NR70v.
This Sony Clie comes with a great 16MB RAM which should cater for the average PDA user that would like to use it as an info management gadget. But there is also room to add Sony’s memory stick which you can buy separately and increase RAM by 32, 64 or 128MB RAM!! I am looking to buy a memory stick, not because I have used up the current 16MB location, but during these past few weeks use I have found that to view graphic files in their original .jpg extension you need one (otherwise the images are converted to a palm OS-compatible format). Also, I haven’t been able to make use of the Clie’s MP3 playing capabilities, for which you also need a memory stick. So be warned, don’t think that by buying the Clie itself, you won’t forking out afterwards for accessories. To give you an idea, I bought the Clie for around 400 pounds from amazon, and I’m looking for a 128MB memory stick for about 100 pounds.
Sony's CLIE uses latest Palm OS, version 4.1. Its silver casing gives it a sleek look and the rotating screen means that it very much provides its own protective casing. At the beginning I was daunted by having such an expensive item and worried that I wasn’t purchasing any padded casing, but I am quietly confident that its own casing will be sufficient. And also, extra casing only makes it harder to access the PDA. The CLIE is about the same size as most Palms and fits nicely into my hands (my hands are smallish).
Data input includes choice between an in-built keyboard, stylus or on-screen graphic keyboard. There is also a jog dial that allows one-handed use and so ergonomically I find it very difficult to criticise this PDA. By the way, I am right handed.
Now to the function. I use my PDA mostly for organising myself. I use the address book, date book, to-do list, and memo pad. The great thing about the address book is that I can beam the addresses to my phone via infra-red. Very cool and very efficient. All these applications can also be synchronised with your computer (e.g. with MS Outlook) so you can keep a back-up of things on your computer and keep space free on your PDA. Synchronisation is also known as hotsyncing.
Other applications that give this PDA the edge over others include an in-built colour camera, which I must admit does not in any way provide sufficient photographic capacity to replace a normal camera but nonetheless you may find useful. As yet, I have found little use for this, but that is probably because I am wary of where I pull my PDA out just to avoid being a victim of a mugging. However, the colour aspect also gives this model an edge over its monochrome predecessors. Some may feel, they can save a lot of money by opting for the monochrome model, but personally, I need colour so that I actually enjoy working on my PDA. However, a sacrifice is battery power and a fully charged PDA can last around 3 hours with its colour screen on. There are power saving feature that allow this time to be extended. So if you are likely to be away from a recharging unit for more than a day, then maybe this model isn’t for you. I recharge every night.
Additional software I have includes a couple of games (there are loads of games available but I try to avoid using my PDA as a games machine), and a book reader which will allow the reading of an ebook on the PDA. As I have mentioned, once I get my memory stick I hope to upload some music so I can use it as a walkman! You can get lots of free software off the internet too.
So all in all, this PDA is a quality purchase. I have not ever owned a PDA, but I have done a lot of research and believe that even if I did have any other PDA that is available at the moment I would have a very hard time loving it more that this one. A great PDA to begin with (if you can afford it) and don’t worry…I intend to use it for many years yet to get my money’s worth. Whilst technology is constantly advancing, I feel a PDA is essential in the busy person’s life, whether it be an early model or the latest. But this model in particular, I believe, has a hell of a lot of life left. Definitely worth considering!
Advantages: Extends the basic palm concept with larger screen, MP3 and camera Disadvantages: case is a bit flimsy and a touch large
I've used PalmOS devices for many years now, and apart from one brief (unhappy) fling with a WinCE device up until I got the Clie they've always been from Palm themselves rather than any of the PalmOS licencees mainly because there was nothing compelling from the alternative suppliers.
When my Palm Vx was starting to show its age, as luck would have it I was starting a project where being able to do (basic) email, web browsing and VNC while on the ... ...with a good (large) screen.
I upgraded to the NR70V on the day they became available for two main reasons - the larger, hires screen and the ability to play MP3s while I make notes (I spend a lot of time on planes !) The camera is an unexpected bonus - despite the low resolution it has come in very handy - you'll be surprised how often being able to take a low-res snap when people don't expect it comes in handy !
I added the Ilynx web browser (PalmScape) ...

Advantages: big screen, camera, plays mp3's, net access, pc sync. Disadvantages: a tad bulkier when you think that the P800 does more or less the same things
...shiney silver feature laden toy sony affectionately calls clie. Having not really been a huge fan of PDA's back in the good old days when Psion ruled the proverbial roost, it has to be said I was pleasantly suprised when I started playing with the clie, it had a big beautiful colourful screen, it's easy to use, lots of lovely apps for playing with pictures, movies, sound files and so on, you can access the internet, (through a stupidly slow connection ... ...slow connection) it's extremely functional, for the more techy beings it runs on palmOS (I think) 5. The usefulness of the clie has to be questioned when you think about it however, as the features I've mentioned, excluding palmOS 5, seem remarkably similar to the sony-ericsson P800, which has the luxury of also being a phone, so for those of us that have limited pocket space, the CLIE seems a little redundant to me, then again, as I said earlier, ...

Advantages: Good Camera and Video, mp3 player, keyboard, documents to go! Disadvantages: Memory, no allowance of WMA, no bluetooth, no flash, limited access to lots of software
When i first got this i thought it was the coolest thing ever, i had to buy a 128mb memory card, so i could put mp3's and lil movies on it. That was very cool.
I love the camera, the camera is great and can really get some good quality pictures, and video. Pity there is no flash though.
I also bought an LAN card so i could use the internet with it when in networks, this was very slow and i felt was quite a waste of money, but that is a diferent ... ...helpful, i loved using the keyboard and typing mini essays which i could continue when at home. The keys are very small so i misspelt alot of the words. It is a really handy little tool, to use as a camera or word processor, but the other little address book contacts etc, can all be kept on an up to date mobile phone. You will need to buy a large memory card to use it so you might aswell just buy a more recent model, and dont waste your money on ...

Advantages: Fantastic range of functionality Disadvantages: Falls apart really easily
Buy this at your peril - Great product but poor design lets it down - mine has been back once because the touch screen went out of kilter - the cover now keeps falling off and the memory card will only stay in if supported by masking tape!!!
When you do have to send it back customer support is hopeless and extremely unhelpful.
The PDA itself is great, the MP3 player could do with a bit more volume but is great quality and the range of colour games ...

Advantages: My life in a tiny compact place no paper! Disadvantages: None to date
...and if you have a Sony laptop then transferring information via the Memory Stick is very easy. The Clie comes with a CD-Rom to load software onto your home computer or your laptop and they sync up beautifully with absolutely no problems whatsoever. The great thing is that you can write something like a Memo template in Microsoft word send it across to your PDA and then when you find five minutes out an about you can do some work then transfer it ... ...Obviously synching up every day means that if the battery ever ran out or you inadvertently reset it (neither of which in 18 months has ever happened to me) then all your info is stored on your home computer or laptop and can simply be transferred over to your PDA again.
All in all, I have had my PEG-NR70V for 18 months now, and I could not ever go back to a filofax or paper. My life has been completely changed by this little pocket PDA and its ...
