I got this as a replacement for a DSC-H1 that was stolen, and the H1 was a 5 megapixel which I thought was good but this is 7 megapixels. You probably would not notice the difference, unless you print very large pictures.
I picked the H1 originally because I wanted one with a good steady shot and was adivsed that the Sony was about the best on the market. I have not been disappointed with either the H1 or the H5. The controls are easy to use.The zoom is great, although it can try to be too clever and focus when you just want to take a quick shot - I have not managed to figure out all the options on taking with manual focus etc. The camera has a lot of features of a DSLR but without the interchangable lens - therefore it is theoretically a compact, just don't tell it that!!!
It is not a cheap camera in the first place, the memory cards are not cheap - Sony memory stick - and you need large capacity ones because of the space each picture takes up. Also, the video function is as good as a basic camcorder. Batteries, another inevitable expensive with a digital camera, but this does eat them - even high powered re-chargable, you want to always make sure you have a spare set (standard AAs) with you because once the power starts going it takes forever to charge the flash - which is not very quick anyway.If you don't want to go as sophisticated as a DSLR, but want the zoom I would recommend this - I did have a Fuji before and this is much better at taking clear pictures. It is not a small camera, nor is it light, but I could not find a compact with a similar optical zoom.
