Sony DSC H9 Review ofSony Cyber-shot DSC-H9Sby

Advantages: size, zoom, li-on battery, tilted LCD Disadvantages: lacks external flash, power button position
This is a very good digital camera for amateur photographers who are fed up with easy turn-on-click cameras and want to expand their knowledge and abilities, experiment and maybe become a pro one day.
It offers a wide enough range of options to set and explore, but you won't make sense of it unless you are or make yourself familiar with some physics, optics and technical stuff, so that you can make the most of using H9's settings. For a person like ... ...this might be not so easy and take quite some time, but once you get into it, H9 grabs you and doesn't let go until you will have taken thousands of pictures and spent hours and hours by computer editing and creating picure albums.
Remote control makes it even more fun and allows you to shoot e.g. birds by your window sitting on your couch while camera's installed by the window.
There's a LOT to do with the camera, might look scary if this is your ...

The sony H9 is a very good camera. Its specs and features can show that for itself. It does have some bad points however.
Pros:
Its x15 zoom is great for getting in close to those shots that are out of reach or for animal shots.
The 3inch LCD that tilts up and down is fantastic for those shots that require a high or low angle. It can also switch between 4 settings to adjust the amount of info displayed on screen and brightness.
Auto mode works ... ...is also many other modes to chose from including video recording.
Its burst mode is also very nice, taking several pictures a second upto 100 pictures before stopping to save.
Can take several hundred pictures on one battery depending on LCD/viewfinder use.
Con:
Main con has to be the picture quality. The H9 has only jpeg as an option when saving and no option to adjust the compression which is higher than I would like. Which can cause some more ...

Shoot At The Speed of Life
Even if you’re not at full speed during the soccer match on Saturday morning, the H9 and H7 models will be. These new cameras can shoot up to 1/4000 of a second, a critical speed for capturing fast-moving sports and freezing the action.
Both cameras are powered by the Bionz processing engine, first used in Sony’s Alpha digital SLR camera system. This new circuitry speeds up response times and delivers the fast image processing ... ...photo viewing.
Capturing fast action does not have to result in blurry photos. The H9 and H7 cameras incorporate Super Steady Shot® optical image stabilization to minimize blur caused by camera shake, an important feature when shooting at slow shutter speeds at full zoom. Their high sensitivity, up to ISO3200, also helps to fight blur resulting from fast-moving subjects.
The H9 camera takes fast-action shooting a step further. It sports a 3-inch, ...

Manufacturer's product description
Sony DSC-H9 is designed to appeal to families with budding athletes in their broods, featuring advanced sports shooting mode. This mode combines high shutter speed shooting and intelligent continuous auto-focusing. The camera can quickly focus on fast-moving subjects by predicting where those subjects will be in the frame. This predictive technology also helps to reduce shutter lag, the time it takes for the camera to focus and shoot. The camera features powerful Carl Zeiss 15x optical zoom lenses for up-close shots of big plays on the field. You won't miss the look of victory in your champion's face with Sony's face detection technology. It can identify up to eight faces in the camera's LCD frame, and automatically adjust white balance and flash as well as focus and exposure for correctly exposed, sharp photos. The H9 camera takes fast-action shooting a step further. It sports a 3-inch, flip-up LCD screen so that you can shoot comfortably from nearly any position. You can hold the camera low to the ground for eye-level shots of kids, without having to contort yourself or crawl on the ground, or hold it high for shots of the crowd. The H9 camera features NightShot technology, which allows taking photographs in environments with virtually no light so you won't miss the action, even at a late night game. The camera's high sensitivity will also help preserve the mood of your pictures by capturing well-exposed, natural-looking photos, even in challenging low-light conditions. You can shoot at higher shutter speeds to take in the maximum amount of light without using the flash. Picture noise, common to pictures shot at high ISO levels, is minimized by Sony's Clear RAW noise reduction technology.

I was laid down a challenge by my wife for her birthday present. She wanted a digital camera on the basis our existing one (Nikon Coolpix 775) is nearly five years old and ancient by today's standards.

Starting with the outdoor test shots I noticed a number of common themes. To start with focusing and colours are impressive. The glare of the sun is also handled well in all three photos with plenty of detail showing on the white areas of the boats.... more
On paper, this was the camera I wanted. Here were my criteria: (1) Shirt-pocket size. I was sick of subconsciously deciding NOT to take a camera along because I didn't want to lug about a bag of camera-plus-accessories-plus-adapter-plus-plus-plus. I... more
This is a very good camera for the price. A huge advantage is its performance in the dark and has an amazing flash range of 7 metres which I have compared with more expensive, more current models and none seem to come close; usually around 4 or 5; the... more
