The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P100 is my first and only digital camera, and although my mum, dad and sister have all had sleek new cameras with big screens and higher resolutions, I've never been inclined to change. The reason is simple, for point and shoot use (in the automatic mode), the photos are great! At the moment that's all I want from a camera, and it delivers! The camera comes with a very small memory card, which only takes a handful of photos, so make sure you purchase a new Memory Stick for when it arrives. I managed to get a 2GB "Memory Stick Duo" very cheap after looking around online, which comes with an adaptor for the standard "Memory Stick" slot that this camera supports.
Although the screen isn't as big as those commonly found on the latest digital cameras, it's still clear and very responsive. The camera features a scroll wheel which allows you to choose between its different modes. Within these modes there is a "Scene Mode", which lets you choose from a list of pre-set configurations, which sets up your camera to perform the best that it can at night, in snow, when taking fast moving objects, etc. The playback mode lets you scroll through your images quickly, and doing so isn't sluggish like with other digital cameras. Another nifty feature is the thumbnail view, by pressing zoom out whilst in preview mode, it brings up a tiled view of your photos, with 6 on the screen, you can then scroll through your whole collection much more efficiently and select what you want without having to view each photo individually.
The camera has some other features which you'd expect, such as a self-timer and a macro mode for shooting objects close up. The movie mode is also quite nice, offering acceptable video quality in its "Standard" mode, and pretty good 30fps video in its "Fine" mode. There's also a "160" setting which offers video quality comparable to the early video phones, in other words - pants. Video mode also features audio, which I know some other digital cameras on the market don't. If you're running out of space on your memory stick, the camera allows you to select 5 different picture qualities. There's the default 5 megapixel mode, a 3.2 megapixel mode, a 3 megapixel mode, a 1 megapixel mode as well as a VGA (suitable for e-mail) mode. Lowering the quality for your last few shots is an easy way to boost the number of photos you have left to take, and of course, anything over 3 megapixels isn't bad!
I've always found the battery life to be good with this camera, often lasting me a couple of days, even with intense use! The useful battery monitor tells you how many minutes of battery life remain, so there's no guessing how long "half a bar" should last. This camera has a re-assuring weight without being too heavy and after being dropped a few times throughout its life, on concrete and even a beach, as well as being subject to heavy rain fall, it's lived to tell the tale!
All in all I would defiantly recommend this product to anyone who wants a reliable, good quality digital camera but isn't bothered about having the latest "super-sexy, super slim" model. It's a camera that's easy to grab hold of, models that are slim are just uncomfortable to use! But most importantly, if you take a snap with this camera, out of the box, you won't be disappointed!
