Myself and hubby bought this camera at the airport on our way out on honeymoon. I've got a nice little Kodak APS camera, but we felt that for this one occasion we would treat ourselves with some of the wedding present money we had been given to a good digital camera. Upon check-in we made a beeline to the duty-free shops (well tax free or whatever it is now). We wanted something that was good value and that was easy enough so we could learn to use it on the 8 hour flight. So the nice man in Dixons recommended the Sony DSC-P10 camera (possibly because they were on special offer and the shop was doing a roaring trade in them).
**Price** We bought ours from the Dixons at Gatwick for £270, it's available online and in shops for between £270-£350. We also bought a bigger memory stick (128Mb) for about £40 as we were warned that the 32Mb supplied wouldn't last long.
**In the Box** You get... The camera itself, which has a stylish aluminium body. The battery and charger, wrist strap and a 32Mb Sony Memory Stick (these are tiny, watch out you dont loose them!). USB and PAL lead. A CD-ROM containing drivers & utilities, including Sony’s PIXELA Image Mixer. A huge manual.
**Features** 5 million pixels 3x Optical Zoom 32Mb memory 3.8x Digital Zoom 1.5" LCD screen Movie Mode facility 6 Resolution Settings Sony Memory Stick Continuous shooting mode USB Connection Video Output 6 Resolution Settings Image modes Manual ISO overrides Multi mode flash Exposure compensation Self-timer Picture Effects Camera Weight 172 g Auto/Manual exposure Battery life (up to) 1.5 hours
**Point & Click** Being excited with our new purchase we had a quick glance through the quick start section and got snapping...
Obviously you need the battery to be charged and have inserted
the memory stick before starting, but this is explained well in the getting started part of the manual, with nice big diagrams to help. The camera itself is fairly simply laid out, it has several buttons, a mode dial (for selecting between still photo, movie, scene selection and review/playback) a control dial (like a joystick for navigating through menus) a menu on/off button and the zoom control. As with most digital cameras there is a small (1.5") LCD Monitor and also an optical view finder.
Taking a simple shot is easy; the camera is set to do most things automatically anyway. You simply turn the dial on the top of the camera onto the camera icon, turn on the power, and you can then take a still photo. The various options you can set, such as image size and quality, are accessed by selecting from drop-down menus that appear on the monitor. We set the camera to take 1600 x 1200 size images, this equates to a good quality A4 size photo. You can set the size up to 2271 x 1704 (very fine) or as low as 640 x 480 (for emailing) if you wish. On our 128Mb memory stick this equated to 133 photos, or 32 photos on the 32Mb stick provided. However, you can let the camera use the auto focus and default picture size to point and click straight away if you wish (beware the default size is the highest).
I found the LCD screen big enough to see the shot that I was taking and reviewing my previous shots well - at least I didn't need to squint! To review photos you can either press the menu button to view the last photo you took or simply set the mode dial to review and scroll back and forth through your photos using the arrows on the control dial. This is the easiest way to review your photos, there's also an option to look at an index of several images on the screen at once, but this makes the photos tiny obviously. One of the best things about having a digital camera is that any rubbish photos are easily deleted, so all the photos you store are ones that (hopefully) are worth keeping.
So, was it easy to use? Yes, although the size of the manual is off-putting at first. However the sections are helpfully laid out into "getting started" and "shooting still images" etc. so it was easy enough to grasp the important bits in a few minutes.
*Zoom Like a standard film camera the Sony DSC has a zoom, there is a 3 x optical zoom to zoom in on what you are viewing before taking a picture. The Zoom uses "Smart" technology, which intelligently adjusts the zoom ratio according to the image resolution. There is also a 4x digital zoom which means once you have taken a photo you can zoom in using the LCD screen, you also have options to crop and resize the image, although I prefer to do this using an image editing package once the photos have been downloaded to PC. The camera also has Auto-Focus, which is good, but can on occasion be a little bit slow if you want to take a quick shot, however you can turn this off if you wish.
*Self-Timer The self timer is like that on a standard camera, you press the clock symbol on the control button to prepare the timer and once you have your image ready you press the shutter. You then have 10 seconds whilst the camera is beeping to get yourself in that shot! We used this function a few times, as when you're walking around rainforests in Canada there aren't always tourists to help you take couple photos!
*Shooting Modes This is where the digital nature of the camera comes into its own for me. I fully admit to being a bit of a photographic pleb and not really knowing what settings I should have my camera on for photographing in anything other than perfect circumstances, I tend to just hope for the best! This is why the "scene selection" option is fantastic. The camera has scene settings for a range of environments. There's "Twilight" and "Twilight Portrait" for dim light conditions, "Landscape", "Snow" which lessens the greyness of images containing a large amount of white by adjusting colour and enhancing luminance. The "High Speed Shutter" quickens the shutter speed in order to minimise camera shake when shooting fast moving objects and, in darker environments, "Fireworks" adjusts the shutter speed, flash, focus and ISO level to take photos in a darker situation. How many times have you taken your camera to fireworks night and got a few grainy black images? Well, I’ve done it a few times!
*Movies & Sound (MPEG) Also, another one of the wondrous marvels of digital cameras - the ability to take movie clips. Taking little movie clips is almost as simple as taking a photo - you simply set the mode dial to 'movie' and press the shutter button. A red recording symbol on the

LCD display lets you know that you're shooting. To stop shooting you just press the shutter again, or if you run out of memory, the camera stops automatically. There is no limit on how long you can video for, other than how much your memory card can store. I managed to take several short (1minute) movie clips as well as 75 photos on the 128Mb memory stick. The quality is excellent, certainly good enough to pay back on your PC or TV at home, and you get sound as well - although this is mainly limited to the noises the cameraman is making!*Battery The camera comes with a rechargeable InfoLithium Battery, which takes 150min to fully charge. The life depends on how many photos you take, the manual states it should last up to 1.5hours but how much you use the zoom & review photos; I’d say it lasted about a week of 'holiday snapping'.
**Viewing Your Photos** Downloading your photos to PC and viewing them is dead easy. The camera can be attached via a USB cable to any computer that has Win98 and above. The drivers and some additional software are provided on the cd-rom. You don't even have to use the software provided. The drivers allow to computer to 'mount' the camera, so it sees the memory stick and your files of photos as another drive. One really great way of viewing your photos is on the TV. The camera comes with a PAL lead that attaches to nearly any TV, and you can view your photos direct from the camera, like having a projector. This is great if you want to show granny or aunt Maude your holiday piccies, but she doesn't own a PC and is too short-sighted to look at the prints!
**More Complex Features I Don't Really Understand **
Exposure Modes - You can adjust the exposure or EV value. Useful if you are shooting a backlit person or a bright snow scene. White Balance - This effectively alters the colour balance, useful when shooting in special circumstances. You can also select the settings manually for auto, daylight, cloudy, fluorescent and incandescent. Spot light metering - You can aim at a particular point and meter the light so you can adjust the focus. Flash Modes - The camera has a standard red-eye reduction mode. You can also set the camera to auto-flash (which I tend to keep it in), Forced Flash (the flash will go off whatever the light) and No Flash. You can also change the brightness of the flash and use the auto-illuminator to help when shooting in dark places. Multipoint Auto Focus & Centre Focus - The focus point can be either just the centre of the view, for a single subject shot or widened, for example when photographing a couple. Clip Motion - You can shoot a number of still images consecutively to make a GIF file. Multi-Picture Burst - Shoots 16 frames in a row, for example when shooting sports action. Special Effects - You can add special effects to images, such as solarize, black and white, sepia and negative. Not that useful as you can do this when they're downloaded too. Image Protection - You can specify images that you don't want to be deleted. You can cancel this too, but you have to go through several menus to do it, so you can't delete by accident!
**Review** I could write loads about all the things the extra features can do, but to be honest I didn't buy the camera with these in mind, as I’ve said before I’m no David Bailey. The fact that it has options for taking photos in a range of environments and had all the "usual" zoom, auto focus, timer etc. was more than enough for me. That and the fact that all the pictures I took were actually in focus! If you wanted to buy this camera for a professional purpose I would recommend speaking to someone in a camera shop such as Jessops. Or maybe visiting your local Sony dealer.
Overall I'm really, really pleased with this camera. It looks good, it's a little a bit heavy, but that makes it feel sturdy in your hands. It's fairly easy to use and takes great quality photos. My only real complaints are that it doesn't come with much memory, which is obviously going to add to the price. The USB jack cover is a bit weak and flimsy, but it's ok if you're gentle I guess. It also has no carry case, I think for the price of the camera Sony should certainly provide one! Ours sat in the rucksack in a sock for 2 weeks until we got back to the uk and bought a case for it! I'm hoping that as I get used to the camera and learn a bit more about the different functions, it will help my photographic skills improve. You wouldn't be able to use specialist filters I guess, but a quick browse through the extras catalogue shows you can buy an underwater case for scuba-diving, so that would be worth trying! There's plenty of room for personal development with this camera, I think it would suit anyone from a beginner like me to a more experienced amateur.
On a different note... I've also found myself falling victim to Sonys clever ploy of making nearly all their goods Memory Stick compliant. Just because i've got the camera, i've found myself looking at Vaios & Clie's and Walkmans... just so I can use my memory sticks!
**I've added a few honeymoon photos to the review - they are at about 1/3 the size they were taken at. I don't think Ciao liked me trying to upload 1Mb piccies!
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
really good review it lists mainly everythingabout this digital camera.

I have a P10 which I bought to replace a stolen P9 - the one annoying and useless feature on the P10 is the "recording file" data dispayed on the screen at statup. It may be useful to some, but not me! That aside I agree with everything in this reveiew - it's a superb piece of kit. I've just been in Dubai for 9 days (including a trip into the desert) and took over 300 photos (plenty memory sticks!). I also have the tele-conversion lens + adaptor & the dedicated Sony slave flash - they make the camera even more versatile! Sony's mini-tripod is quite useful too for self-timer or for poorly lit subjects.
