Photography was never my strongest point; I would enthusiastically take loads of pictures whilst on holiday on 35mm rolls of film, only to find that when they were developed they didn't come out right. The photos would be blurred, shaken, heads cut off, legs cut off, under exposed, over exposed & sometimes the indignity of those little advice stickers stuck on them advising me in a polite way that I have just wasted most of my film. However, eventually along came the answer, a digital camera, now if I messed up a photo I could delete it & try again.
About four years ago I purchased one of these Sony DSC-P72 digital cameras & to be honest have never looked back. I do not know if these cameras are still available new but I have seen new ones in a small rural camera store & Ebay recently.
Before I purchased I did some research & looked at Nikon & Canon as well as Sony. Nikon & Canon are established names in the field of cameras where as Sony is more famous for all the other electrical products you can think of. I like Sony products, they are usually up to the minute in features & design, perform very well & are ultra reliable albeit a bit pricey. I read many good reviews of the Sony camera so it was the DSC-P72 model that I eventually purchased at £240.00. A hefty price by today standards but at the time it was quite competitive. Also in the range was the DSC-P32 & P52 which had less features. I wish Sony would give names to their products like car makers rather than models codes.
It came with 1 x 16mb memory card, two rechargeable batteries with a separate charger, software for your PC for customising your pictures, leads (mini USB to normal USB & for TV use), a wrist strap & a rather thick instruction book. However you don't get a camera case or mains lead. The case cost me an extra £25.00 but it has proved excellent with pockets for extra cards, batteries & adaptors.
The camera weighs in at 300kg with the batteries fitted, quite a bulk compared to more modern cameras. It measures approx 12cm long, 6cm high & just under 4cm wide; one end has a rounded profile. It's not a camera you could just pop into your top pocket as it's a bit too bulky for that but it does feel quite substantial & looks like it would survive a torrent of abuse. It is certainly well made & four years on it has never failed me.
The camera features 3.2 mega pixels, many modern phones with cameras will exceed that but remember this was bought in 2004. It has a Sony optical lens 6-8mm 1=2.8 - 5.6, built in flash but a small LCD screen not much bigger than a large postage stamp.
The memory card sits under the camera in a plastic flap, you push in to insert & push again to remove, the cards are Sony's memory Stick Pro & unique to them. At the flat edge under a hinged spring loaded flap is the battery housing; it uses two AA rechargeable batteries. They supplied two Sony batteries which lasted two years, in the first year I purchased two more from Sony for £15.00 & they lasted the same time. I now use Duracell rechargeable batteries which are far superior & considerably cheaper, 6 for £9.99.
On the rear of the camera is the control panel & screen, a large thumbwheel allows for four settings. Top is for playback of pictures or moving images, next is the setting for taking photos, next down is the setting for moving video film & the last one is for set up.
Many modern cameras have a quick set up control, unfortunately this one doesn't & if your not familiar with the camera making small changes can take a while as the procedures are a bit laborious. The set up setting allows the operator to insert the date/time if desired, change exposure settings, switch on & off red eye reduction, change from colour to black & white or even sepia & many other basic functions.
Three little buttons next to the screen allow you to play back & delete photos, retrim them & gather information on screen for battery power, memory card usage & much more. The retrimming feature is rather good, should you take a photo of a subject & it ends up off centre, you can reposition it, (within reason) save it & delete the original. You can also zoom in on an image although it can alter the focusing on some distant images.
A jog control on the rear of the camera allows for playback of photos, you can choose a slide display if necessary, alter the volume on video film & many other features too. Also on the rear of the camera is the thumb control for telescopic & wide angle control, this can also be used when trimming your images. Below that where your thumb usually sits is a neat rubber cover. Peel it back & it reveals a mini USB socket, yellow socket for TV connections (Both leads are supplied) & a power socket for 240volts but they don't supply a lead. Under the camera at the opposite end for the memory card is a threaded hole for inserting onto a tripod. The camera has no hard drive & can only store images to a memory card.
GETTING STARTED Charging time for the batteries is a hefty 6 hours, once charged & inserted there is a power save function which can be switched on or off. The camera will switch itself off if no controls are used for approx two minutes. The set up control allows you to set a date & time, select a self timer, select flash mode, formatting a memory card, create a folder, adjusting exposure, colour tones, flash level & switching to multi burst mode which is so handy for instant multi shots at a sports event.
MEMORY CARDS Depending on the size of card you insert will depend on how many images you can store on it. Some examples are;
16mb card will take about 18 images with a 3.1m image size & 243 images on a smaller VGA setting. 128mb card will take 149 images with a 3.1m image size & 1975 images on the basic VGA setting. The handbook features a more detailed graph to let you know the differences. Obviously if you take many moving images they take up a lot of space on your memory card but playback is great & the sound from the tiny speaker is better than you would expect.
There isn't much the 120 page handbook misses out on & despite such a small & basic device it took a while for me to get my head round it all. The camera may look basic but it does have quite a number of features.
HOW DOES IT PERFORM? I have to say the quality of the photographs has been excellent, I've had some mishaps but if I was to show these to the Sony engineers they would put that down to my lack of experience rather than the camera. It does have its limitations but despite that it has taken some excellent pictures. One of the few that I have attached to my review is the eclipse of the moon from 2007. Standing in my back yard I took an image of the eclipse using the telescopic lens & was amazed to get the image that I actually got. Incidentally, the moon is few miles from my backyard!!
My main criticism is when you are not in multi burst mode & just take a normal picture you can't take another picture for around 5 seconds. This can be a nuisance when you want a couple of quick pictures & haven't got the time to switch to multi burst mode.
DOWNLOADING PHOTOS Transferring your pictures to your computer is very easy using the supplied software. Once the software has been loaded on, as soon as you connect the camera to your computer it automatically starts downloading the images onto your dedicated site. If you don't want to or can't access a computer, you can of course just remove the card & take it to your local Tesco or Boots & insert into their machine for developing or your own dedicated printer. I have a Sony lap top which features a dedicated 'gate' which allows me to insert the card directly into the lap top & download the pictures right away. Many lap tops have card readers to allow you to do the same.
One thing I have noticed is when you rename your photos on the computer but don't delete from the card, when you reinsert the card to the camera it doesn't recognise the photos but they are still on the card. You can't see them & often think your card is empty when in fact it still has your images on the card.
ANY GRIPES? Aside for the aforementioned delay between taking pictures my main gripe is on two occasions the image on the LCD screen crashed, like a computer. There is a small reset switch under the rubber cover which kick started the camera again. The LCD screen is too small compared to more modern cameras although you do get used to it & changing modes from the set up switch is time consuming compared to more modern cameras.
Over all this is a camera I could recommend which isn't too complex but takes a great photograph & will provide reliable service.
Advantages: Excellent camera, can take great pictures Disadvantages: Small memory stick, bad software

I got the Sony DSC-P72 for Christmas last year after deciding it was the best digital camera I could see for below £200. It’s not the lightest (260g) or smallest (12 cm x 3.3 cm x 5.8 cm) camera, but it is still good for carrying around with you, and sits well in my hands when I take photos. It is capable of taking 3 Megapixel images which is good enough for most people’s use. It has a pretty good look, shiny grey, with one straight edge ... ...This camera is compatible with Sony Memory stick and Memory stick Pro. The memory card provided is pretty hopeless, 16MB, and you can only take 8 or 9 photos at full quality before it’s full. It’s definitely worth getting a larger card as soon as possible; I got a 64MB one for £25.
Instruction manual: The manual is very detailed and easy to understand. There is a dictionary of numbers that come up on the display from time to time (they alert you ...

...he presents to me the Sony CyberShot DSC P72. I was stunned (I thought he would've bought some crappy little thing, ok so I was wrong). I know that Sony is a great electronics company, but what are their digital still cameras like, I asked myself. I promptly developed the photos my father had taken and I was stunned at the quality that this machine churns out.
Here is my review:
The thing that attracts me to the Sony P72 (Sony Cybershot DSC P72) ... ...seen the likes of the Sony P72, you get what you pay for and then some. Only $550AU, about 230 GBP (however you can get it cheaper if you look around) or $330EU.
The digital still pictures on this machine are of great quality, for the camera has 3.2 effective megapixels and 3x optical zoom (however you can zoom in to about 4.5x but this compromises the quality of the images you take). One feature that I really enjoy is the 5x Precision Digital Zoom ...

Advantages: Good value for money, good quality pictures Disadvantages: Learning to use it properly
Our purchase of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P72 was an on-the-run airport effort. They were already calling the gate for our flight and we'd spent so long going through security... and we wanted to buy a digital camera duty free to save the VAT.
Why did we buy a Sony?
We weren't faced with a lot of choice in the airport shop and we wanted a Sony with its memory stick so that we could use it easily with our Sony computer. You take the memory stick out ... ...So we've had our Sony Cyper-shot for over a year. What's the low-down?
I'm not a teccy person - I get confused by my mobile phone - but I can use it to take photos and short mpeg movies (only about a minute long but they can be amusing). Occasionally I'll press a wrong button or something will happen (a little symbol will appear) and I'll be stuck as to what is going on. Switching the camera off and then back on again seems to work on these occasions.

I recently bought one of these online from a well-established website. It was a fantastic deal. Free case and delivery included, all for £170.79!!! The camera is very well made, easy to use ( I did read the manual but tinkering around with it for 30 minutes helped more!) 3.2 mega-pixels makes sure you can get up to A4 sized prints, The 3x zoom function works brilliantly and there is also digital zoom on the camera so you can get the exact shot you ... ...personal fave is the movie mode. Having two young daughters, this is great. You even get a cable supplied so you can plug the camera straight into your telly to watch the m-pegs!! SUPER!! I splashed out the extra £40. and got a 128 meg stick which you can ...

Having searched the internet for hours i finally decided that my first Digital camera would be the SonycybershotDSCP200 and let me explain why.
Firstly the 7.2 megapixel quality was very appealing especially for a camera made by sony and at a good price tag.
Having taken many videos and pictures with my camera i can say the 7.2 megapixel was a great investment as it really produces clear vibrant pictures. However the only down side is that you really have to hold the camera verryyyyyy still when taking pictures as even a slight movement seems to blur the picture so if you want a camera to snap while you ride a rollercoaster this is not for you.
The other thing that was appealing was it looked very easy to use which thankfully it was. The camera has three main sections at the back:
