I have had my Sony DSC for a couple of years now. Apart from when I dropped it once, it has not let me down. It's very easy to use and changing between modes is simple, you just have to turn the wheel on the top of the camera. There are many different modes, for example beach shot, scenic view shot, motion shot etc. These are very useful in the appropriate situation but most of the time the normal mode is fine for taking pictures.
This camera can also record videos as well at a resolution of 640x480. The video function is easy to use, just select the video mode on the mode wheel on top of the camera and press the usual 'take picture' button. Videos do have sound but one thing to note is that you cannot zoom in or out once you have started recording. However, picture quality is relatively good. To get a decent amount of video you will need a Memory Stick Pro.
Accessing the batteries and memory card slot is easy, it's located under a flap on the side of the camera. This camera can take all the Sony memory sticks, including Memory Stick Pro, as well as some third party ones. The Sony Memory Sticks can be quite expensive though, my camera came with a 32MB card but you need about 512MB to realistically get a decent number of pictures taken, although if you change the camera setting to use a smaller resolution (say 1 mega pixel) then you can get hundreds of pictures on it. Most of the time I leave the quality setting at 4 mega pixels, which gives great pictures at 2304x1728 on your computer. Uploading pictures to computer is easy enough, just use the provided USB cable. I'd recommend for anyone other than a beginner to NOT install the Sony software that comes with it, it's a lot easier to just use Windows external devices wizard to transfer pictures on to your hard drive.
The zoom on the camera is not anything special but it will cover most situations. It has 3x optical zoom (where the lens adjusts) and you can add a further 3x digital zoom (where the software zooms in within the picture).
The options menu on the camera is easy enough to navigate giving you access to all sorts of advanced settings, such as remove red eye (which is achieved by using multiple flashes) and also lets you set time/date etc. The only problem I have ever had with this camera is when I dropped it on the lens, which got bent. I sent it into Jessops and within a month it was back in full working condition. As long as you don't drop it directly on the lens it could probably withstand a fairly serious drop. The camera is a decent size as well, just small enough to fit a pocket to take out on a night out. I paid around £300 for mine a few years ago but they are a lot cheaper now. I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone, whether beginner or expert (although probably not professional photographer), you wont be disappointed. It even comes with rechargeable batteries and a charger.
