Being somewhat of a camera whore (no pun intended), Sony's DSC-W17 stood out like a sore thumb when making my purchase.
With a 7.2 Mega Pixel effective shot, you're really looking at A3 size pictures to print naturall with this resolution, but should have no problem going even larger with printers. Photo quality is incredible, crystal clear, BUT, purples are not reproduced no matter how much you tweak the settings. Upon consulting my good friend the internet, this problem, it would seem, occurs in many other digital cameras, causing purples to be displayed as blue...something to think about if you like taking pictures of Barney the dinosaur.
In all seriousness, the DSC-W17 out costs and out performs its rivals, and actually feels like a camera, not a lump of metal or a brick, or even a credit card. Its nice to have this sort of feel you just dont get anymore.
Carl Zeiss lens is included by standard. Need I say more?
There are several preset modes for you to choose from when taking pictures, including 7MP, 5MP, 3MP, and 1MP, and for preset settings, such as the beach, and snow. Most of these offset light and lens glare.
The camera takes standard AA batteries, and sony has provided some of its rechargables, but if you want long lasting battery life (as I did), its best to opt for the 2500 Nimh rechargables, as they will give you most battery life. Having said that, you can get around 380 shots with a single battery life.
Transfer speeds. The bone of contention for most users and their cameras. Dont worry here however, speeds are well over 80mbs in around 5 seconds. No worries here:P
Accessories. Supplied with the camera was:
Charger, Case (Leather...), AV Video cable, Manuals, CD, USB 2 Cable.
Although it should be noted if you do not have a USB2 card on your PC, you will not experience the expedited transfer rates.
Overall, an excellent camera with an excellent arsenal of facilities. Well priced, and durable.
Advantages: Sleek Black with included picture package Disadvantages: Needs large memory stick - due to high quality
>. My Sony Cyber-shot .<
When purchasing a new digital camera, it is very hard to see to choose which one to buy as there are so many on the market, and now all the prices are being driven town. As background information I purchased my Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W17 from www.amazon.co.uk for £202 - and those who have used amazon will truly know that the service provided is second to none. I shall start with the general technical jargon about the camera.
... ...The display on the Sony Cyber-shot is LCD and will not let you down with its 115,000 pixels. It is TFT active matrix, which i have not worked out yet and comes in with a reasonalbe size of 2.5" and is fully in colour.

This is a nice solid, easy to use camera. Picture quality really is good and it's simple to use. It's a digital 'Box Brownie'

Advantages: slim ,light weight and good look with easy functions Disadvantages: low in built memory like other digi cameras
I bought this camera about a month ago, and its the first one .since then I've been taking pictures all over the place! In normal mode, you get very high quality pictures, but you start to see the true beauty of the camera in manual mode. Switching the shutter speeds can give amazing pictures, and the Macro is very impressive for shots less than 30cm away. The onscreen layout is superb, the controls easy to use.
This camera is ideal for a beginner ...
