If you're looking for a digital camera which can be used by the young and not-so-young, the amateur and the professionals, you have clicked on the correct review. With the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W5, it doesn't matter if you want to simply point-and-shoot or spend ages adjusting the manual settings; it's all there for however you want to use it.

I admit that when I purchased the said camera, most of the above specification meant nothing to me, just a load of jumbled numbers with random anagrams of acronyms.
From what I had read, optical zoom was useful to have since it kept the image quality better than digital zoom, and generally the more megapixels it has, the better the image quality is. Since I was looking for a fairly decent digital camera, I thought this looked like a good buy, especially at the £139 I paid for it.
*** Packaging ***
The camera packaging is quite small, as with most products nowadays, but it looks professional and could easily be given as a gift. After finally managing to open the packing, due to the extensive amount of fiddly flaps, you will get to see the camera in all its gleaming plastic bags.
The box is small, but the inside is made of a material, not dissimilar to an eggbox, which means that the camera and its accessories seem well protected. Mine had been sent by a courier which have a reputation for damaging their parcels en-route to the recipient, but this remained intact, probably due to the small, yet efficient packaging.
The box is packed with the various accessories which come bundled with the camera, namely a set of rechargeable batteries, a charger, a USB cable, an AV cable, a wrist strap and a pack containing the various manuals and leaflets.
I was extremely impressed (And to be honest, surprised) that the camera comes equipped with Sony batteries and a Sony charger, which always come in handy. After I had ordered the camera online, I actually bought some fairly good rechargeable batteries, not realising they'd be included, so the camera cost me less than I first thought.
Unfortunately, as with most digital cameras, a memory card is not included, just 16Mb of internal memory, which only lasts for a few shots. To compensate for this, I bought a 512Mb Memory Stick Pro, which holds about 200 shots before I need to sort them out. At less than £10.00, this does finish the whole package off, so I highly recommend that you purchase one to save you continually having to delete photos.
*** Physical inspection ***
The front of the camera (Which faced the top of the box) looks very smart with a matt, silver finish, a large-looking lens near the centre and silver detail around the various parts. Already, the camera is looking much more expensive than the £139 it cost me, so I was sure that they must have skimped on features somewhere along the way.
As you pick the camera out of the box, you will notice how heavy it is, which I suppose is a good sign, meaning it's good quality, but it seems a little too heavy to be carrying around for family days out and so on.
The top of the camera simply features a setting dial, a power button and a small LED which comes to life when the camera is powered on. The dial allows you to change between the various modes and scenes such as manual mode, automatic mode, playback mode, movie mode and much more. In the centre of the dial is the shutter release button, which seems the most sensible place to put it. I've seen cameras where it is in other positions, usually much worse than this.
On the side are plastic flaps covering a USB and AV connection. These allow you to export the photographs and movies to your computer or a suitable television, which is a useful feature if you want to share your photographs with relatives or friends.
As you turn the camera over, you'll see the amazing 2.5" LCD screen, which looks absolutely stunning. Nearly covering the back of the camera, it just leaves enough room for the essential buttons. I have had a few cameras in the past, but none had such a large screen. The screen allows you to see exactly what will be included on the photograph, as well as allowing you to change settings, so it is extremely important to have a clear screen. To the right of the screen are seven buttons and a rocker switch to operate the camera with, and they are all very responsive.
*** Taking photographs ***
If you are like me, who just wants to point-and-shoot, this has to be one of the easiest cameras to operate. Simply turn the dial on the top to "Automatic" mode, push down the shutter release half way to focus the camera and then push it all the way down. Voila, you have a photograph!
To view the photograph, you simple rotate the dial to the "Playback" position and scroll through the photographs using the left and right buttons and delete the ones you don't want with the dedicated "Delete" button near the bottom of the camera.
If you want it to be that simple, you can, but there are also a wide range of manual settings that can be adjusted such as the aperture, shutter speed, flash intensity, white balance and much more. I admit that I've tried to use the manual mode, but it's a little too complex for my liking, so I usually use automatic.
On either mode, you can make use of the 3x optical zoom and 6x digital zoom, operated using the rocker switch near the top of the camera. Also, the camera has several other useful functions such as Pictbridge, which allows the camera to be connected directly to a suitable printer using the USB cable, rather than having to use it through the computer. I admit that I do use this a lot since it saves having to start up the computer just to print one or two photographs.
The picture quality on this camera is outstanding. Although it is a relatively low 5 megapixels, the images are crisp, sharp and vibrant and you definitely feel as though you are there in the photograph. This is definitely helped by the excellent Carl Zeiss, rather than the unbranded ones most digital cameras come equipped with.
Using the supplied rechargeable batteries, I can normally manage approximately 100 to 150 shots, more if the LCD screen is turned off. This is perfectly adequate for my usage, but other people may find this is too few for them. If this is the case, make sure you have some extra batteries lined up!
*** Conclusion ***
Sony have recently discontinued this camera and I do not see why. The photographs it produces are absolutely stunning, the camera itself is well made, albeit a little heavy, and it's just a fantastic all round camera. I have been using it for nearly a year now and have taken over 1000 excellent photos on it.
*** Photo uploads ***
I have some photographs taken by the camera which I will be uploading when I reach "Green" status, so please rate my review. Thank you.

...you always get from higher-end Sony products, not only externally but internally too. The picture quality is very high. The camera produces very crisp and clear images with perfect focus even when looked at zoomed in. The camera takes high quality photos inside and outside, unlike some other brands that take excellent photos outside but struggle to replicate indoors. What strikes me most about the photo's I take with this camera is their vibrancy ... ...be held deadly still to avoid blur like some cameras. The camera uses a feature in which it shines an orange glow on the area you have targeted when taking a photo, the orange glow remains for a few moments and then is replaced by the flash (the camera has lots of flash options such as, Auto, On, Off and Red-Eye Reduction) and the cameras shutter noise. Within this time, if the camera moves dramatically, the photo will not take. This means no blurry ...

First Impressions
==============
When I first got the camera home and opened the box I was quite impressed with the contents. Apart from the camera itself (which looked very nice), two rechargeable batteries and a battery charger was also included. This has proved extremely useful and is a nice addition to the pack. Normal AA batteries can also be used for longer battery life. Also included was a wrist strap ... ...The camera itself feels quite substantial, albeit a bit bulky. The 2.5" LCD screen occupies most of the back of the camera, with a rotating menu button at the top and various other buttons on the back-right of the camera.
The screen is obviously a selling point of this camera, so I will dwell on this for a bit. It is very, very good. The image is crystal clear and it is easy due to the size of it to line up some excellent shots. One disadvantage ...

Advantages: Durable, not flimsy, great outdoor shots in sunlight Disadvantages: Night and candlelight shots could use improvement
The SONY CYBER-SHOT DSC-W5 is a 5.1 megapixel digital camera that has most of the standard SONY CYBERSHOT features, which I do not want to elaborate here because that can be read in the specs and by anyone. I have had this camera for almost 4 years now, and it has survived countless traumatic drops, rolls, falls, and the constant curious prodding, poking, and even throwing at the hands of my two toddlers. Everytime I picked up the camera and checked to make sure everything was working, it did not disappoint. The 5.1 megapixel may not give you as high a resolution as what cameras these days offer, but it is plenty ...
