We bought this Sony DCR-SR300 for our trip to Italy. We got more than what we expected.
BASIC FEATURES: +++++++++++++++

MODES: ++++++ It has both Video and Camera mode. It has upto 6.1 MP still image recording. Switching between Video and Camera mode is just a push of a button. There is a rotatable button on the top with a small Green button. We need to press the green push button and move the Rotatable button. It moves to three modes 1) View Mode 2) Camera Mode and 3) Off. By default it stays in the Video mode. By moving the button back and forth gets it into Camera mode and vice-versa. We can any time switch to Camera mode while in Video mode.
STORAGE: ++++++++ The HDD storage is what has made this a best one. The 40GB HDD storage is amazing. Unlike the previous models in sony you need not have to carry any back-ups. There is option to choose the storage of Still images. It can be set to be stored in HDD or in Memory Stick.
BATTERY: ++++++++ A compact lithium battery placed just at the backside of the handycam. It is attached by a one-touch lock. Various modes to save battery life. Recording speeds matter to the battery life- HP, SP & LP.
ZOOM +++++ It has 10X Optical zoom lens and 20X Digital Zoom. The zoom in and zoom out is smooth and can capture a clear video.
LCD ++++ The 2.7" wide LCD is one the unique feature and gives a clear picture. The quality of recording is excellent. The LCD is rotatable and it rotates to 360 degree. This enables you to shoot from the position you are in. You need not have to go along with the Handycam.
But it does not have a viewfinder. The view in the LCD is more than enough anyway.
The LCD portion comes with Touch screen menu. The touch screen menu includes

On the side of the LCD there are four flat buttons - Home, Zoom-in, Zoom-out and Start/Stop. This is for displaying the recorded video.
OTHER BUTTONS: ++++++++++++++
1) PLAY - To play the recorded video. This is a push button. 2) DISPLAY - Display Battery information. 3) BACK LIGHT - This gives an additional light while recording. 4) WIDE SELECT - The selection of screen size either wide or normal. 5) EASY 6) NIGHTSHOT - On or Off
These menu buttons are located on the left side of handycam and are placed horizontally. The LCD while closed covers the button giving a no-button appearance. The Pro-duo memory card slot & speaker are also located here.
STRAP ++++++ The adjustable strap is on the right-hand side of the camera giving a firm grip to the Handycam.
Other features include the microphone located on the front end. A flash button on the rear-end just below the mode button. There is a docking station port located under the camcorder. The docking station comes with one touch DVD burn facility. The handycam comes with a software with various functions to play with the recorded video.
Most of the features are automated hence less work for us. It may not be of great help for people who prefer manual adjustments. Video clarity is amazing.
Though it is little expensive, we opted it for its ease of use, handy, clarity and compactness.
