...out to me – the Sony D-EJ625 in the Sales at a steal of a price in £60 (that’s half the RRP), and before you knew it my hard earned cash was parted with and I had the Discman of my dreams.

This was one of the major factors in my decision on what model to go for. When borrowing Dads Discman I used to find that I was walking around with what felt like a brick in my lap – it couldn’t fit ... ...a huge hindrance on my walk anywhere.
On seeing the display model of the D-EJ625 I was shocked at how small it was its actually only about an Inch thick and is only a few millimetres bigger than the CD’s you’re going to be putting in it.

Oh this is going to be hard isn’t it? – I mean it’s a CD player – it plays CDs, what more could you possibly want to know?, oh information?, well I can try and give you that – can’t promise though.
Many years ago I remember when a ‘Discman’ was the in-thing to have, I was only about 14 at the time but decided that I had to have one – but as per usual so did Dad – and we ended up getting one that could be used in the Car as well as for personal use. Guess what? – it was a great little machine in those days, but now that I’ve branched out and started to need my own Discman a bit more I wanted something that had a little more ‘ooomph’ behind it, I mean whatever model it is that Dad has even struggles playing CD-Rs (Copied CDs) and for a high-flying Student who owns a CD-Writer like myself – that isn’t good enough.
So last December armed with the knowledge that I had some un-spent Christmas cash I embarked on a visit around the so-called ‘January Sales’ with a wad (well £100 in notes) of cash in tow on a look-out for my new ‘Discman’. Everywhere I looked in Grimsby they were charging well in excess of £100 for a model that was worth buying (aka not made by Alba) and I almost gave up hope till I went into PowerHouse – and there it was calling out to me – the Sony D-EJ625 in the Sales at a steal of a price in £60 (that’s half the RRP), and before you knew it my hard earned cash was parted with and I had the Discman of my dreams.

This was one of the major factors in my decision on what model to go for. When borrowing Dads Discman I used to find that I was walking around with what felt like a brick in my lap – it couldn’t fit in any of the pockets on my Jacket and was a huge hindrance on my walk anywhere.
On seeing the display model of the D-EJ625 I was shocked at how small it was its actually only about an Inch thick and is only a few millimetres bigger than the CD’s you’re going to be putting in it.
When walking and listening to the Discman to be honest if you keep it any pockets you’ll find that if it wasn’t for the music playing in your ears you’d completely forget it was there. To be honest most models that are in the market today aren’t much bigger and if you pay a little more you do sometimes find them even smaller – but this one just seems the right middling as its neither too big or too small.
* Sound *
Now then I’m no techie – in fact I’m probably the last person you’re going to want to ask about a truly technical review of something but it has to be said that the actual sound on the D-EJ625 is astronomically better than what you can hear on the full Stereo System I purchased 3 years ago that was also made by Sony.
Using a Digital Sound technique you do get to hear almost every single sound on the CDs you play – whenever I’m listening to music on a new System I always like to put it through its paces with a wide range of Music – the D-EJ625s test came in the form of 1977 by Ash, Born Again by Bond and the Gone in sixty Seconds Soundtrack – all of these CDs have quiet and loud times in them – by that I’m meaning they have areas where although the music is still playing its extremely quiet.
Listening to the above-mentioned CDs on the D-EJ625 you find that you can hear every single note played no matter how loud or quiet it is, on using other Makes and Models of Discman (specifically the D-EJ610 and the Panasonic SL-CT470) I found that even if you turned the volume up to its full strength you wouldn’t hear it all, however on this particular Discman everything is heard.
Volume wise, well I don’t play my music quiet (just ask the neighbours), and the Top Volume is still too loud for me, you can have any of 27 different volumes, however when you hit the real high Volumes you’ll find that theres a bit of a fuzziness to the sound.
They even have the Bass on a Digital system – so that all you have to do is touch a button on the main player itself and before long those under-lying tones will start to shine through – unlike the old Discman I have though it is actually noticeable this time.
* Power *
When you buy your D-EJ625 you’ll find that theres 2 rechargable batteries included with your Discman. On the box it says that you can expect up to 36 hours battery-life in normal use.
Well, in my experience of using it you can usually expect roughly 28 hours before you get a noticeable change – you’ll start to hear clicking before a CD starts, and it’ll struggle to start the disc spinning within the system. However there is also a small L.E.D. display that shows how much power you have left which is very similar to the type of display you’ll see on a mobile phone – i.e. 4 bars means a full battery, 3 means nearly 2 means you’re starting to go low on power and one means you’re in trouble.
If for whatever reason you ever do run your batteries to the ground well normally if you bung them into a charger for about 4-5 hours they’ll be fully topped up again ready to use.
* Features *
Firstly theres the 2 material features:
Battery Case: Ever gone on a long trip and lost your all or one of the spare set of batteries for your CD-player – well with this handy little item you don’t have to worry as it keeps both batteries together and is perfect for keeping in a jacket pocket or something similar.
Handle: If for whatever reason you don’t want to keep your Discman in a pocket and want to hold it they have included a Handle that you thread through a small hole on the casing and voila! You get a handle that you can put round your wrist to stop your D-EJ625 being stolen!
And now for the Technical Features:
G-Protection: The bane of anybody who uses a Discman’s life is when the music stops as the machines been shook – well the D-EJ625 is a bit of a mystery to me.
See when on a train or running for whatever reason it still plays fine, but for some reason every so often it’ll cut out when you’re simply walking to the Bus-stop or into Town.
The thing is the G-Protection is the big-thing they’ve tried to sell it on and fair enough – they have ensured that you don’t have to worry about the heavy use yet the problem is that give it a slight tap sometimes and before you know it the best song in the world will have jumped.
Remote-Control: Fair enough it could have been put in the material features, but its still more Techie for me, basically half-way between the headphones and the Discman itself theres a small circular thing – with that you can skip a track, go back to earlier tracks, adjust the volume or pause a song mid-track (just in case you run into a friend or someone similar) – and that’s handy if you’re only listening to the one CD whilst out and about.
Headphones: The standard fare of actual in your ear-phones rather than looking like 2 cans on your head attached to each other with Perspex.
Hold: And now for something completely different – if you know that you may be finding yourself pressing buttons that you shouldn’t be doing on the Player (such as pause, stop, volume, etc) itself there is a ‘Hold’ facility that means no matter what you press the CD will be on the settings you want it on. On top of this it is a simple thing to implement, all you have to do is flick a switch and nothing will change.
CD-Rs: Remember me mentioning copied CDs up there? Well officially the D-EJ625 doesn’t play them but on asking the sales assistant at PowerHouse he assured me they did play them with a promise of my money back if they didn’t. On getting the machine home I tested it to find that they do work – the only flaw is that the CD Player sounds like the batteries running out when you play your copied CDs (*tuts* at my law-breaking activities).
Track Order: It is a bit tricky but theres the general offerings here – either random play, straight normal play or if you feel like it theres the chance to order what tracks you want from the album you’re playing all in the order you want, and although its tricky to do it does work.
Is there anything missing? (I’ve got a good guess that one comment is coming from a certain someone), if so tough!!! – I’m not techie enough for these type of reviews dagnammit – leave me with my film reviews in future and let me be – please?
Advantages: Amazing performance, reliable and desirable Disadvantages: No remote control I suppose
...You guessed it!
Sony seem to have got everything right with their latest range of high end cd players. I have always bought Sony portables - from an offensive bright yellow sports walkman to my old and trusty discman – simply because of their quality and reliability. However, this player has exceeded my already high expectations by quite a way. After my old discman suffered an untimely death at the hands of an axe (long story) I switched to ... ...got. It seems Sony have upped the ante on their already aptly titled ‘Mega Bass’, it should now carry a health warning, it is that destructive! Not wanting to admit to rude-boyism, but I am a bit partial to stomach churning bass funk. This player can go to stupid depths of bass, it comes in three levels, with the middle one being just right for me, and the maximum amount of bass not only pushes the headphones too far, it’s enough ...

Advantages: Everything really! Disadvantages: Mine broke down at first, maybe could have had a radio?
Sony is a well-known brand for electronics, especially in the sound and vision industry. This new Walkman is the result of years of experience in the portable audio field.
It has the new ultra slim technology that allows the Walkman to be little thicker than a centimetre, and due to new, smaller components, is round, and little bigger than a CD.
It has a set of rechargeable lithium batteries, which are charged inside the Walkman. They give nearly ... ...of headphones, along with a wired remote control. The headphones fit well into your ears, and give a deep, full sound, with great bass. The round remote allows you to skip backwards and forwards, stop, play and change the volume. It also features a hold key to prevent accidental activation of the buttons.
The actual unit is small, slim and good-looking. Available in silver or blue, It’ll be a trendy accessory even for the most stylish of people!

Advantages: G-Protection Function (anti-jog), 32 hour stamina, small (for a walkman, anyway). Disadvantages: Colour fades with time, 32hour battery stamina n/a if too much jogging occurs
It really does feel good when you go for your daily jog while listening to music, without the CD keep on jumping. This walkman is the width/length of a CD + 3mm... tiny! Not only that, but it doesn't jog AT ALL, even if you shake it vigorously. I don't know about you, but it annoys me when I'm riding on a train/car and the CD jogs every 3 secs. But we don't have that problem with this CD player. Another brilliant factor of this walkman, is that it ... ...two AA battery's. The sound quality is pretty outstanding too, with a high maximum volume and a virtual surround sound function. This product includes the standard headphones + mains adapter, though you can buy a remote control seperately. The CD player also is very straight forward, with an LCD on the front, surrounded by the standard play, stop, track back, track forward and 3 other mode buttons next to it. All this improves the ease of use.

Advantages: Light, Portable, Value for Money Disadvantages: Quite Fragile
This great personal CD player is a fantastic quality product, just what you would expect from a top quality brand, such as Sony. It is great value for money, as with this product, we have been given both quality and quantity! It is both light and portable, and highly attractive.
It has a shiny, round base and any audio CD can be used in this walkman. This enchanting idea from this company, with a set of headphones and quality speakers, which are ... ...that inspire it but the sound and the quality also makes it stand from others.
The prices are good for a FAB CD player like this, and I would highly recommend it to any person interested in music. You can get it in most good technology stores for between £60 and £70. A GREAT BUY! ...

Advantages: Everying you need Disadvantages: MP3 players are taking over
If you are looking for a discman this is perfect! You can get it in a varity of colours and it is compleatly jog proof, tried and tested.
It has a control on the head hone so there is no need for messing about in your bag and both kinds of controls can be out on hole so no accidental skipping off your favourite song. To be honest for a discman it is not really that chunky at all. I manage to fit mine in my schol bag and listen day witout taking ...
