~ ~ Unless you require a very upmarket model with features such as Dolby sound, then it may be worth having a look at this good little machine. For a basic player it is very well assembled, as we have come to expect from Sony over the years, with an attractive front panel which can be read easily from a distance, even by someone “half blind” like me.
~ ~ It’s very easy to hook up, with loads of input and output sockets for sound and picture, an easy to use “on-screen menu”, and a remote control that is simplicity itself to use. The sound and picture quality is excellent, and it has a “surround mode” feature, which emulates the sound you get in the actual cinema itself.
~ ~ You can “jump” very easily to whatever part of the movie takes your fancy by using a feature called “smooth scan”, and unlike some players it manages to achieve this without you even noticing the joins.
~ ~ One drawback is the distinct “humming” noise it makes while running, but this is not overly intrusive, and not too noticeable once the film starts to play.
~ ~ Taken as a whole, this is a very good DVD player for the price. It certainly doesn’t come “loaded” with extras like some of its more expensive cousins, but it does give you a crystal clear picture, super sound quality, and is incredibly easy to use.

I have had this player for over 6 months now and can highly recommend it to anyone. I am very fussy about electronic gear but this one is very good. It is currently connected to a DTS amp and a 32" widescreen panasonic TV. The combination works very well and produces high quality sound and vision. Use its bigger brother the 725 if you don't have a DTS amp and want quality sound output.
I have this player chipped up for region 1 use and have not ...

Advantages: Quality of picture and sound, ease of use Disadvantages: lip sync problems, Layer change pause
...mainly because I've always found Sony products to be the best in the field, and this player seemed the best value in the range.
The only downsides have been a lipsync problem which has occurred about 3 times since I've had the player, but was solved by stopping and starting the disc. Also the Layer change pause which effects nearly all DVD players. ...

Advantages: Easily modified, great sound and picture Disadvantages: Only available in Silver and Black, no pink!!
So you want a simple but effective DVD player?
You don't need loads of fancy features - you wont use them!!! This wonderful little unit does everything I need, has all the right outputs and at a good price - around £280.
The unit can easily be modified to allow multi-region playback and its RGB output is crisp and colourful - the sounds pretty damn good, too.
I have mine hooked up to a dolby surround pro-logoc system and it sounds fantastic!
