The Sony Dual Shock 3 controller is the official controller of the Sony PS3.
Communicating with the console via wireless, this is definitely the number one controller on the market. Used to control games, DVD's and also as a place to plug pocket sized extensions into, such as a keyboard.
=== ~~~ Size + Weight ~~~ ===
For someone who, I would say has medium sized hands, this controller fits ... ...my thumbs and all other buttons are easily reachable.
The Dual Shock 2 is quite a bit heavier than the Sixaxis version, because of the rumble function. This is a bonus for me, because the Sixaxis controllers were slightly light. The extra weight makes the controllers seem more sturdy and reliable.

After the analogue sticks on both my Sixaxis controllers began sticking, I was forced to buy the Dual Shock 3 model and so far it has served me well.

~~~ Size + Weight ~~~
For someone who, I would say has medium sized hands, this controller fits perfectly. The analogue sticks are at the perfect position for my thumbs and all other buttons are easily reachable.
The Dual Shock 2 is quite a bit heavier than the Sixaxis version, because of the rumble function. This is a bonus for me, because the Sixaxis controllers were slightly light. The extra weight makes the controllers seem more sturdy and reliable.
~~~ Buttons ~~~
I've had my controller for around six months now and everything is working the way it originally was. The buttons and the analogue sticks work smoothly without sticking in an unusual position.
I don't have the problem of my fingers slipping off the L2 and R2 buttons, but I do occasionally find my thumb slipping off the analogue stick when playing FIFA. An indent like on the Xbox controllers could maybe help this and you can also buy indented covers, but I've chosen not to.
~~~ Rumble Function ~~~
I was never a big fan of the rumble function, hence the reason I delayed buying a Dual Shock until my Sixaxis succumbed to wear and tear.
However, I now appreciate the rumble function more and it does add that little bit more to your gaming experience, such as running off track in a racing game or being hit by an explosion in a shooter.
~~~ Sixaxis ~~~
This allows the controller to be motion sensitive. I don't have a lot of experience with using it as not many of the games I play use it, but when I have used it it has worked well, albeit a little tricky. More and more games are being released on the PS Store, which focus specifically on this function.
A PS3 "wand" is supposed to be being released early 2010, which will be focused on motion sensor technology, so the sixaxis function may become less important.
~~~ Battery Life ~~~
The battery life on these controllers is excellent. From full charge it takes about 8 hours before it needs re-charged, which only takes about 20 minutes.
The rumble function has reduced the battery life a little in my opinion, as I don't remember having to charge them as much, although I did use to rotate.
~~~ Wireless ~~~
The controller connects wirelessly to the PS3 via wireless (bluetooth). I'm not exactly sure what the maximum range is supposed to be, 20ft maybe. My experience is playing from a maximum of 10ft away and it works perfectly.
~~~ Summary ~~~
This is an excellent controller and for me the best you can buy for the PS3, simply because there has been no wear and tear issues so far. However, at around £35 it's still quite expensive and I would recommend only buying one and then maybe a Sixaxis as a backup or for friends to use.
Advantages: rumble effect, sixaxis motion sensor, usb cable supplied Disadvantages: only a few games support vibration
when i first got my PS3 it came with the original sixaxis controller, now i believe when you buy a PS3 now the dualshock 3 comes as standard. The dualshock 3 now has a different style of material, it is more comfortable and makes your hands not feel as if you have coated them in butter. The R2 and L2 buttons have also been changed, i have noticed that they have bigger "grooves" which i think is a help to FPS (first person shooter) games. these controllers ... ...this as the controller actually sits firm in the hand. the analogue sticks are much more sensitive and seem more reliable than the sixaxis' ones, my original sixaxis controllers analogue sticks started to become stiff and squeaky after a few months. so far the dualshock 3 is keeping well. alot of people on the internet have stated that the dualshock 3 controller does not include the sixaxis feature, just to let you know IT DOES. the controller seems ...
Advantages: good handheld device, shape, connection and tilt sensor. Disadvantages: Battery life is not too great
...is the best controller that Sony could have stuck with and in actual fact they changed the PS3 controllers after a couple of months so that they were these wireless controllers. The buttons are in good places and the controller is neither too big or too small. The shape of the controller allows easy access to the R1, R2, L1 and L2 buttons on the top of the controller. The shape will also accomodate if you want two fingers on the top instead of just ... ...easy way to play many of the games that just would not be possible with the original directional buttons. Overall i would say that if you have a PS3 do not buy cheap knock-offs, get the real thing! The tilt sensor makes gameplay fun and even more interesting! ...
Advantages: Good weight and strong rumble. Disadvantages: A bit expensive.
The DualShock 3 is the wireless controller that comes bundled with every new PS3. If you bought you PlayStation in 2007 or 2008 then you will probably have Sixaxis (which is no longer manufactured.) The only difference is that the DualShock includes a rumble feature and the Sixaxis doesn't. The Dualshock is obviously heavier because of this but that makes it feel more robust. There is a built in rechargeable battery but you will need a USB cable ... ...it. This cable isn't very long so not convenient for playing whilst charging but any USB cable with a Mini-B connecter will work (these come included with most Nokia handsets and other mobile phones as well as many PC accessories.) Almost all new PS3 games support rumble functionality and most older games can be updated to support it as well. If you need an extra PS3 controller, you should go for the DualShock 3 although it is a little expensive. ...
This controller is simply fantastic it's very very easiy to use whith out any problem of anything. like whith the wired controllers it's not good.
One of gamers' biggest beefs with the PlayStation 3 will soon be a thing of the past. At the kickoff press conference for the Tokyo Game Show, Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai confirmed longstanding rumors that a rumble-ized version of the PS3 Sixaxis controller is on the way. The DualShock3--which looks essentially identical to the existing Sixaxis PS3controller--will hit Japan in November, then make its way to North America and Europe early in 2008. Devil May Cry 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4 are two of the first 11 games that will support the new DualShock's vibration function, and existing titles can be retroactively updated to support rumble via online updates ...
