The Sony Ericsson C510 is a mid-range phone released in early 2009. It was part of a multitude of phone released at the same time. It belongs to the Cybershot range of the SE phones - of which K850, C903 and C905 are more superior. It can be considered the "successor" (very similar specifications) to the K770i or the K810.
--- the BASICS ---
The C510 is a candybar phone, no sliding, folding or rotating gimmicks. I have this phone with 3 - the mobile company (it's locked to this network). The phone has features you would expect for a mid-range handset: 3.2 megapixel camera, 2.2" 256K TFT colour screen, 3G internet, RDS FM radio and other various features (e.g. a dedicated Facebook programme) which I will talk about later.
--- USABILITY ---
(Introduction) The C510 is a no nonsense camera phone. It has a very short response time and apart from the switch on lag (i.e. 30 seconds after switching on everything is really slow) all programmes works well. It supports JAVA so most games will play on it. The C510 can technically be called a "smartphone" too - as multiple programmes can run at the same time by pressing on the dedicated "programme" key.
The design of the phone is also worth a praise - it is very thin and light. The buttons are nicely placed and inputting is easy.
(Sound and Multimedia) The phone is not supposed to be excellent in music - SE produces a Walkman range phones (with model numbers start with W e.g. W995). However this phone does have an MP3 (and other formats also supported) player. The provided headphone produces good sound. The speaker is loud and clear and one would not miss a call on the General setting.
The multimedia capability of the phone is good and is capable of handling movies of reasonable quality. The phone is equipped with a CrossMediaBar (XMB) - a Sony patented menu which allows easy navigation of various multimedia options (e.g. Games / Videos / Pictures).
The phone is equipped with an RDS FM Radio which displays information from the FM station the user is listening to. The reception is good with the provided headphones.
(Internet and Messaging) The internet capability of this phone is excellent and certainly exceeds expectations. The browser has a built-in cursor (operated by the 4 way arrow) for clear and accurate clicking. The internet operates at the fastest speeds allowed by 3G turbo.
Text messaging is as with standard SE phones. The message appears on the phone as one receives it. Writing messages is easy thanks to the (relatively) large keypad.
(Screen and Camera) The screen despite the 256K colour is nice and clear. The 2.2" screen appears bigger than its physical size and compares favourably with other phones with a similar sized screen.
The camera, being the selling point of Cybershot phones, deserves a mention. It is a 3.15MP CMOS camera capable of capturing 2048x1536 pixels. There are various options (one with expect with a camera) including white balance, ISO settings and a new feature known as the Smile Shutter. This new setting, when switched on, causes the camera to take a picture when the phone detects a "smile" on the person - which supposedly means no one is not smiling on a photo! I have found that this feature is hit and miss at best and sometimes no pictures are taken at all as no smile is detected.
--- CONCLUSION ---
The C510 phone is a feature packed phone for the normal everyday user. It is small and light enough to be fit in a jeans pocket but has features that can rival bigger-sized competitors. I have had this phone for nearly 6 weeks now and can recommend this phone.
