of the cost of original manufacturers and can be used in many makes and models of digital device. Rechargeable digital batteries are rated in "mAh" which stands for "milli-ampere hours". This rating is used to state the storage capability of a battery, e.g. a 1000mAh battery would be capable of delivering 1000mA of current consistently for one hour whereas a 2000mAh battery would deliver the same 1000mA of current for two hours. Li-on rechargeable digital batteries can deliver 40% more capacity than comparably sized NiCd batteries and weigh less than the nickel-based batteries and develop no memory effect. U-Bop battery cells are environmentally friendly, feature a very high energy density and have no memory effect. All batteries are produced to the highest quality standards. A built-in microprocessor safeguards the cells by limiting maximum voltage and by protecting against deep discharge, short circuit and overload.Brought to you byU-BopThe Accessories Boutique

I remember when I first purchased the Nokia 3210, it was new then and not everyone had it. It was state of the art, it was small, light and it turned heads. Now it seems it’s as common as muck. Well not that far.
A few months ago, after having my Nokia for just over a year I decided to get a new phone. The 3310 put me off, it seemed as if too many people were getting it and I wanted something a bit more unique. Not that I’m vain like that, I just wanted something a little different.
I went to the contract phones, which offered a lot more variety in terms of quality and features. After weeks of deliberating I decided to buy the Sony CMD-Z5 over the Nokia 8210. I knew that quality wouldn’t be a problem because Sony has a long-standing reputation of near perfect quality technological products.
It certainly looks the part. It looks a lot more mature (if a phone can) than the Nokia phones out there. It has a sleek silver-coated cover, which is non-removable so you cant swap covers like you can with the Nokia’s. It is also very small, no bigger than a credit card and very light, only 3g more than the Nokia 8210 (see below for the Spec’s). One disadvantage it may have is the external ariel which some may find off putting. I do not have a problem with it, it just adds to the phones style. The screen is pleasingly big; it has a 6-line display, which makes writing and viewing text messages nice and easy. It is also protected against fingerprints and scratches thanks to its high value UV coating.
Sony has implemented a ‘jog dial’ onto the left hand side of the phone, much like the scroller on the Nokia 7110. This can take a bit of getting used to initially but it does come in very useful and once you get used to it it’s very easy to use. The buttons are well laid out and clear and (usually) are very responsive although because of the phone size people with bigger fingers may end up pressing the wrong buttons.
There are several functions built into the phone and can be accessed via a very nice looking menu system, a sort of nice little scroller type thing. The functions (including the sub sections) are…
PHONEBOOK
The phonebook can handle up to 500 people. Each person you enter also has room for fax and e-mail information, which can be helpful and again reinforces this phones professional quality.
People can also be put into groups, represented by some little symbols, like smiley faces or office blocks. This helps if you have a long list of people because you can easily get to the group.
MESSAGES
Read | Create | Settings
Like most phones the Sony one comes with predictive text input (in this case T9) more than often it gets the word you want right. The optional words are displayed at the bottom of the screen, instead of having to go to a different screen, by using the job dial you can scroll to the word you want. By pressing the * and # you can change the case of the lettering or insert functions. The functions are lined up by rows which can be selected by the jog dial and then the character will be chosen from that row. Sending the message does take time because you have to push the jog dial in then up but, again, its just something you need to get the hang of.
The inbox can handle up to 10 messages. Each message can contain up to 160 characters.
RINGER
Ringer | Vibra Alert | Manner Mode
There is a selection of 27 ringing tones available on the Sony phone. You can also compose them with a little built in keyboard although you can’t download them from the net like you can with a Nokia. You can also assign ringtones for the different groups of people.
The ringer volume can be adjusted but it doesn’t really get too loud. You can also program so it makes a single beep, vibrates only or is totally silent.
SCHEDULE
This is a very helpful little function. Basically you can program important events in, such as meetings, into the scheduler. You can have an alarm to go off to remind you of it at the time or 5mins before. It is easy to navigate around and again symbols can be used to determine the event.
CLOCK
Alarm | Timer | World Clock | Time Signal |Clock Format | Analogue | Auto power off | Set day/time
The clock is pretty standard, coming in 24hour, AM/PM, with date or World clock format. The world clock is useful if you intend to ring people abroad and want to know if you are about to ring them up or not. The alarm is quite loud enough to wake you up and if needs be can be turned a bit more discreet.
DIVERT
You can divert calls if
Unavailable All calls If not reachable If no reply If busy
You can also divert
All fax All data
CALCULATOR
Not really much to say, it adds up and takes away numbers very accurately. It is also displayed as a real calculator which makes it a bit more unique and easier to follow.
CALL HISTORY
A list of all incoming and outgoing calls you have had giving you the time and date phoned.
SETTINGS
Preferences | Security | Call time, cost | Call Settings
You can program this phone to your hearts content because it has so many different options. You can change the language, key click sound, make a greeting message and also change the animation that greets you (a nifty pool of water, city or pool table) among many other things.
You can also create 2 PIN codes and a personal lock for security reasons. Call time is useful although it doesn’t actually display the cost although this may or may not have something to do with my network.
MEMO
Voice Memo Box | Record Voice | Answer Machine
Another useful little feature. This allows you to get a sound recording of up to 30seconds. There is a maximum of 10 slots it can take up. The answering machine also saves you going to your network answer phone service and will also save you money if it does cost anything.
There are also the ‘Extras’. For some reason or other Sony neglected to put these on the original menu and does involve quite a tricky manoeuvre with the jog dial to get up (in my experience push down hard and up at the same time). It also doesn’t devote much space to it in the manual.
BROWSER
Home | Favourites | Settings
I must admit I don’t spend too long on the WAP function, seeing as I can get on the real thing for less money. However from little looks it looks okay, it has Microsoft Mobile Explorer, which looks well laid out and quite easy to use. The favourites act just like the ones on here so it saves time and effort. The screen, because of its size, can display a comfortable amount of info
E-MAIL
Read | Send | Settings
You access this through the Mobile Internet Explorer. Useful if you are not at your computer but because of the keys it can take a bit longer than usual.
GAMES
Shooting | Fishing
What phone these days would be complete without the games? In this case clay pigeon shooting and fishing. They are both controlled easily by the jog dial and can while away a few minutes with ease. There are around 5 rounds in the shooting game, the fishing game lasts for around 4mins where you have to try and catch the biggest batch of fish. Be careful though because your thumb/finger controlling the jog dial may get a little worn.
That is the Sony CMD-Z5. A solid, good looking and well equipped phone which gets attention as well. There are the aforementioned problems, the keys and the lack of extras on the menu but apart from that it is hard to fault. Battery life (below) is long lasting, I charge it around every 3-4 days and it doesn’t take long. The charger itself it also very nice.
If you want a phone you can personalise to death with covers and ring tones get a Nokia 3310 or 8210. If you don’t mind sticking with the same cover and limited ring tones in exchange for far more features then the Sony is for you.
And for all you dirty minded people thinking about the title, don’t.

All Round the best Phone I have ever owned, and would want to get another if i lost it / it did break... BUT it is bombproof.
It comes with a rather cool desktop charger, that conviniently with some double sided stick sits in the car, as the desktop charger plugs into the car charger!

Advantages: Stylish, unique features, easy to use jog-dial functionality, in-built answerphone, WAP and POP e-mail access Disadvantages: No Infra-red capability to link to a PDA or PC.
...by a new product. The Sony Z5 didn't surprise me. It simply lived up to my high expectations. It is one unique, powerful little phone.
Initially you are drawn in by the sheer style of the handset - it's the sort of phone you want to put on the table in front of you when you go down the pub. But underneath the polished chrome exterior lies probably the most user friendly interface Ive come across. The jog dial is a revelation allowing you to access ... ...you've discovered that the dial can be pushed back as well as in, you'll have access to all of the phones numerous features.
And what features they are. WAP access which seems to run considerably faster than I expected, utilising Microsofts Internet explorer. Accessing your normal e-mail account, something the Z5 and only a handful of other phones can do, is also staightforward providing you have all the necessary details. Both of these are extremely ...

My friend has the Sony CMD-Z5 -a sleek well designed phone and I couldn't wait to check it out. I swapped with him for a week as an experiment.
I like Nokia phones they're reliable and look good. However I want something different to everyone, hate to follow the crowd you know... The Sony CMD-Z5 is the most well thought out, feature packed phones I've ever used. It is compact, with a flip design covering the keys and half of the screen. The flip ... ...open it. The phone weighs about the same as a Nokia 8210 (a phone that I'm thinking of getting after discovering that I need Snake and the option to change my logo and ringtones once in a while!). At first the screen looks a little small. This is not true - when the flip is closed - in the standby position, half of the screen is covered. When you switch your phone on you have the option of having an animation of your choice - flowing water, a city ...

Advantages: Lots of features, easy to use, looks great Disadvantages: Poor instructions for WAP and e-mail
I have had my Sony CMD-Z5 for about a month or so now, and I love it! The sleek design and anti-scratch, anti-mark silver finish make it an eye catching accessory, as well as a powerful communications device.
I'd had my eye on the Z5 for a while and decided to upgrade on my existing One2One tariff. If you are thinking of upgrading, it's well worth having an open chat with someone from your existing network's customer service team. Speaking of which, each single memory space allows the storage of three phone numbers, plus two text fields - no more multiple phone book entries for your friends' home, mobile & work numbers, and you can store their home and e-mail addresses too!
Sony's 'Jog Dial' feature makes accessing the phone's features quick and easy. The dial is turned, pushed in, backwards or ...

...the time of writing, the Sony Z5 is listed as being the top rated mobile phone here at Ciao. I've recently sent mine back, very disappointed, wondering how anyone can bear to use it.
Let me explain. For the first half an hour or so of usage, I was thinking 'this is the best mobile phone ever made!', I was taken in by the size of the thing, the lovely silver coating, the beautiful greyscale screen, and the intuitive navigation that the advanced jog ... ...Poor show, Sony.
Why Sony chose to license Microsoft's Mobile Explorer, I'll never know. It's at least as bug-ridden as it's desktop counterpart, I'm afraid to report (what about Mobile Opera? Come on people... (www.opera.com)). Three minutes into my first WAP call, the phone asks me for my PIN number and spontaneously reset. This didn't instill a great deal of confidence, I can tell you. On trying to re-connect, I found I had to reset the phone ...

Advantages: lowest currently measured radiation Disadvantages: replacement purchase
Boasting the lowest measured SAR radiation value on the market to date with a figure of 0.02, makes me want to buy one, source:
www.cellular.co.za/health/radiationgsmphonea-to-z.htm
Contrast that to
SonyCMDZ5 at 1.06 - which is 53 times more.
Nokia 6210 at 1.19 - roughly 58 times a higher figure.
Ericsson T28 at 1.49
I do like my gadgets and functions, and I do think other phones do serve me better than the V3688 which is also quite expensive and is not the phone I would chose based on functionality! But the very low radiation levels mean I cannot ignore it purely for health reasons. There is no hard evidence that mobile phones are detrimental to health but that's what they said about BSE, (any unknown is safe)
