My old phone packed in on me - it was a Nokia and that was the brand I'd always gone with but this time I htought I'd be brave and try something new.
I decided on a Sony Ericsson K300i - it was a great deal from Amazon at £50 and boasted lots of features:
Tri-band phone Imaging Sound recorder Picture gallery Picture phonebook Wallpaper animation Picture wallpaper Backlight display Camera integrated E-mail Instant Messaging SMS long (Text Messaging) 4X Digital zoom Themes display MMS (Multimedia Messaging) QuickShare" MMS templates Video streaming Video record MMS Video EMS (Enhanced Messaging) Camera VGA Video Clip Screensaver Viewfinder display Predictive text input
It come with a hand frees kit, user guide and battery charger.
I'd never had a camera phone before
but my partner has and although the image quality isn't as good as his £200 phone - it was much better than expected for a cheap phone. You can add frames to your pics (e.g make someone look like a monkey or bunny) and use different effects such a sepia, negative, solarise.
You can also record quite long videos clips - I've stored lots and haven't run out of memory as of yet. There is a loud noise when the shutter operates which although annoying is apparently a legality in some countries - stops people taking sneaky camera pics!
It has all the features other phones currently have such as allowing you to use pictures in your contact list, display pictures as wallpaper, use screensavers and assign various tones.
The voice dial does work but I'm sure most people feel as daft as i do using it and much prefer to press a button!
***My favourite things about this phone***
The best thing has to be how easy it is to write a text message with. The predictive text input actually works much better than any other phone I've tried. You can start to write the word normally half way through if you know the dictionary won't fnd it and adding your own words is very simply and quick.
Once you've wrote your message and clicked send the phone has a great feature - it stores the last few people you have sent messages to right at the top of the list which means you can text you best friend, your mum and your partner quicker than anyone!
Also the battery life is fantastic - at least twice as long as my nokia. I have honestly gone a week without charging it when considering it gets used to take pictures and record/watch mini videos that can't be bad.
All phone calls that I've made have had good reception and it is very easy to hear the other caller. I haven't had problems with the line cracking or difficuluity connected as of yet. I am with EasyMobile (from EasyJet)
***Any Other Features?*** There aren't tons of added extras but all the basic are there plus a few others to keep you entertained;
The phone came with 2 games but there are quite boring and we haven't bothered with them as yet. More can be purchsed from the sony erricsson website for around £3/4
Internet - the Internet works but I think in general phones have a long way to go before i would consider the Internet facilties to be any good. It simply costs too much (10p per minute) to find and read and info at all.
The phone has infrared but I can't comment on it as I've never used it!
There is a calender, notebook, measurement convertor, alarm (which can be set as a one off or re-occuring which is handy as it lets you select the individual days), timer, stopwatch, calculator and code memo (which i haven't sussed out as of yet?).
You can use different profiles such a quiet mode for meetings and these are easy to personalise.
The phone is quite small and fits neatly in your pocket. it did take me a while to get used to the small buttons but I don't have any problem with them nowdays.
The screen automatically goes into a battery save mode after a minute or so - it can be quickly brought back up by pressing one key.
There is a DJ feature which lets you compose your own tunes - can be quite fun.
The phone plays polyphonic ringtunes and also MP3's. It is very stylish being navy blue and silver so with the good sound quality you don't feel embrassed about your phone at all.
You can use MMS and email also.Any Bad points?
Shutter sound when taking a pic.
Picture gallery and menus can sometimes take a while to access.
Sound to alert you low battery is very loud and has caused some people to jump out of their chairs in panic - not good in a quiet place!
Can take a while to get used to small buttons and fiddly joystick - but once you do it becomes second nature.
Sound recorder can playback a bit muffled.
No data cable supplied so you have lots of great pics but no easy way of getting them onto PC.
Al in all this phone definately gets my recommendation. It works well - both in text message and voice calls which are t he main things we buy a phone for. There are plenty of other things to keep you amused too. For £50 you can't go wrong. It must be quite well built as my 13mth old son likes to throw it across the room and play with the joystick and it hasn't broke (as of yet!).
