I received this phone as part of a new mobile phone contract a few weeks ago and I am very happy with it. I used to own a Sony Ericsson a few years ago, but switched to a Samsung due to its sleek looks, but I am very happy to return, as the Sony is so much easier to use.
The first thing you notice about the phone when picking it up is its light weight and large screen, perfect for taking photo with the 2 megapixel camera. Mine came in black with silver buttons and looks great, albeit not as sleek at the some of the slide-down phones lke the Samsung E900 or the LG Chocolate. However, the build quality is far superior, with metal buttons and lens cover on the camera.
In terms of it features, the K550i's most prominant asset is the 2 megapixel camera. It gives great shots and the phone is designed to be held horizontally when taking photos, just as if it were a camera not a phone. Another great feature, not often seen on phones of this type is the sturdy lens cover that, when opened, immediately enters the phone into camera mode.
As well as pictures, the K550i also excels in the sounds department with mp3 playback and a good amount of memory to store your tunes. It also comes with the software and cables to connect it to your PC making the transfer of files for ringtones etc. a doddle. In terms of playback, the phone performs well, with fairly good sounds quality from the built in speakers, though the headphones provided are your best bet when listening to music. There is also a nice shortcut key on the side of the phone to start/pause your music, allowing you to avoid fiddling with menus once you have selected the tracks you want to play.
In terms of ease of use, the phone is great, with easily navigable menus and useful shortcut keys. Text messaging is also very good, much better than Samsung and Motorola and a close second behind the texting king that is Nokia.
For memory, the phone comes with 64M built in, which though not a huge amount, can be augmented by inserting a sony memory card. Though pricey, this is clever way of storing your music and images and allows you to free up the rest of your phone's memory.
Other extra features that impressed me were some of the fun auxiliery applications included. These include the Track ID software, that can identify music that is playing around you; the Photo DJ, Video DJ and Music DJ that let you play around and alter the music, image or video files on your phone; the Remote Control function that lets you control some external items via Bluetooth and the FaceWarp program that provides hours of fun distorting portait pictures of you and your friends!
As for negatives, there aren't many to be honest, but if one was knit-picking, the buttons, though stylish, are small and can make texting more awkward than it should be. Also, the battery life is quite short, which is not surprising given the amount of energy I use on my phone when listening to music and looking at pictures.
All in all this is a great phone, with solid build quality, a great camera, good music playback, great for text messaging and full of useful extra features and applications.
