----------------------------------------------------------------------

Having recently renewed my contract with Orange (who I was going to leave following a pretty shoddy first year of contract until they went all Marlon Brando in 'The Godfather' on me… No… They didn't have me wake up to a horse's head in my bed! They simply gave me an offer I couldn't refuse…) upgraded my mobile phone from the Sony Ericsson W800i which had been fairly problematic at times to the Sony Ericsson K800i.

It's a phone that I quite liked the look of but the fact that it features a 3.2 mega pixel digital camera was something that I loved the thought of - having had a 2 mega pixel camera on the W800i that gave some pretty good results, I thought moving up to 3.2 mega pixels would be amazing. That said, I have read online that the camera is in fact only 3.15 mega pixel but that's as near as damn it to 3.2 mega pixel, I suppose!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

THE LOOK

The handset is slightly bigger than the W800i but looks quite nice and stylish with a black and silver casing. The keys are quite small and closely packed together and as a result using the phone can sometimes be a little on the fiddly side.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CAMERA

The back of the phone is quite nice to look at too. This is where the 3.2 mega pixel Cyber-Shot™ camera is situated - this is accessible via a small sliding piece of plastic that protects the lens when the camera is not in use. The W800i that I used to own used very bright LEDs as a flash (and could also double them up as a fully-fledged light which could be very useful from time to time - which is something missing from the K800i that I do miss) whereas the K800i has a proper camera flash. The Xenon flash is like that on a dedicated digital camera and allows flash photography as well as a double flash for red-eye reduction.

The flash is very bright and more than admirably does the job - the problem being that it sometimes does the job too well. The closer the subject is to you when you take a photo with the flash activated, the more they will look like a hugely bright white blob - unless of course any of your friends are bright white blobs - in which case, there's no need to panic.

Having taken a few shots with the 3.3 mega pixel camera, I can say that the results are pretty bloody lovely, all in all. The colours are caught perfectly and as the resolution is up to 2048x1536 pixels, they will print out very nicely too - assuming that you have a printer that prints photo quality (see my Epson RX425 3-in-one combo review as this is the machine I use that prints photo quality images very nicely indeed and also comes recommended by yours truly!).

The camera allows you lots of different options when taking photos:

VIDEO MODE

Film in either 10 second bursts of video for MMS messages or unlimited video (memory dependant) for other video filming.

Focusing including: Auto, macro and infinite settings
Image stabiliser.

Night Mode

Effects including: Black & white, negative, sepia and solarize

White balance

Turn mic on/off

*** PLEASE NOTE ***

No flash is available in video mode.

The video camera mode records in the pretty naff QCIF mode which is only 176x144 pixels and looks pretty blocky. Thankfully the still camera is amazing! (read on)…

STILL CAMERA MODE

SHOOT MODES

NORMAL (The standard mode).

BESTPIC™: This takes 9 photos in a rapid succession and then lets you choose however many of the 9 you think are good. This should eliminate pictures where the final result is unusable due to the subject blinking at the point the picture was taken.

PANORAMA: This lets you take up to three pictures that can be joined together at the point of taking them to make up one large panoramic image! This generally works very well and can lead to some very nice results though these can depend greatly on the lighting of each individual image (sometimes they don't quite match) and on how steady your hand is when taking them!

FRAMES: This allows you to put pictures of people into novelty frames - such as their face on a cartoon Elvis Presley or onto a cartoon astronaut etc! This can be quite entertaining initially but can become a little boring quite fast.

OTHER FEATURES

SCENES

These are different options that can be selected when shooting in different environments and situations.

AUTO: The normal shoot mode.

TWILIGHT LANDSCAPE: For shooting landscape orientated photos in dusky conditions.

TWILIGHT PORTRAIT: For shooting portrait orientated photos in dusky conditions.

LANDSCAPE: For shooting landscape orientated photos in normal conditions.

PORTRAIT: For shooting portrait orientated photos in normal conditions.

BEACH/SNOW: For shooting in conditions where daylight might be reflected back from the environment - as in sandy conditions at the beach and snowy areas.

SPORTS: This has a faster shutter speed for capturing images of subjects that are faster.

DOCUMENT: This allows macro shooting for taking photos of documents or drawings etc.

PICTURE SIZE

As well as taking pictures in 3 MP size, you can also choose smaller formats such as 2 MP, 1 MP and VGA modes.

OTHER OPTIONS

Focusing including: Auto, macro and infinite settings

Flash: Off, Auto (one flash) and Red-eye reduction (two flashes - the first to reduce the irises of the subject's eyes before the second flash when the photo is taken. As the retina of the human eye reflects back red light, the reduced irises will usually reduce or eliminate the "red-eye effect" in photos.

Self-timer: Ideal if you want to compose yourself for a reasonable self-portrait or to be a part of a group photo.

Effects including: Black & white, negative, sepia and solarize.

White balance modes: Auto, daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent and incandescent.

Metering modes: Normal and spot.

Picture quality: Normal or fine. As far as I can see, Fine mode keeps the same resolution but improves the overall quality of the image.

There are also options to choose a shutter sound (though I think it's mostly less annoying to have no sound - though I think that's only obtainable if the entire phone is set to silent mode) and to add the date and time to photos if you want that option.

All photos and videos can be saved to either the phone memory or the memory stick.

All in all, the K800i has a very impressive 3 mega pixel camera which is probably a lot better than it really ought to be - given that it's on a mobile phone!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

3G CAMERA & 3G CALLING

There is also a small camera above the top right of the display screen. This is used for the purpose of 3G video calling. This is a feature that I have not yet used as currently, 3G coverage in the UK is very limited. It's something that appeals though as it's just a little bit Sci-Fi… the thought of being able to hold video conversations with someone while you're on the move. Ideal for staying more in touch with a loved one when you can't physically be there with them… *Sigh!*

----------------------------------------------------------------------

THE SCREEN

The screen is a fine 240 x 320 pixel / 30 x 40 mm / 2.0 inch display which gives very sharp colours with excellent resolution. It is possible to personalise your display with all manners of themes to change the look of the phone - and with the use of personal pictures either taken with the onboard camera or downloaded from a PC or other source.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

SOUNDS

The K800i ring tones can be either 72 Channel Polyphonic, MP3 or creations from the composer where the user can make their own little melodies. This allows the phone to be very customisable.

Sounds can also be personalised for the likes of text messages and for the alarm clock feature (a total of five different alarms can be set on this handset) so you can choose to either wake up to your favourite song if you have it on either the phone memory or optional external memory (more on this later) in MP3 format or with the onboard radio. All in all, pretty swish!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

OTHER RING TONE OPTIONS

I've recently discovered that as well as having the option to customise your ring tones as far as having a personalised ring tone and picture come up onscreen when someone that is already in your phone book calls (for example a loved one - e.g. your fiancée etc…) you can also have video set as a ring tone - whether it be one that has been downloaded to your phone or filmed with your camera. This way you can have a friend etc shout at you in video form to "Pick up the bloody phone!" or something to that effect when they call you!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

MEMORY

The K800i comes with 64MB of internal memory which is okay but gets taken up very quickly - especially for users who wish to store photographs and MP3's.

The memory is expandable with the new Sony Memory Stick Micro (M2) which is available as 256MB, 512MB and 1GB versions and are smaller than previous memory sticks - coming in slightly smaller than a 5p piece. It's remarkable that so much can fit onto so little. The prices of the external memory sticks will vary quite wildly depending on where you shop for them.

I purchased a 1GB one from a Phones4U store for £39.99 - whereas other high street mobile phone retailers were selling the exact same card for anything up to £65, so be careful where you buy! Of course, there will be places online that will do memory for good prices - but beware of added postage costs as some places can add between £5 and £10 for something absolutely tiny that would weigh practically nothing at all if it weren't for its packaging!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

CONNECTIVITY

The K800i is a phone that allows several different types of connection for files and data transfer.

The phone is Bluetooth enabled and allows the user to connect to other Bluetooth devices such as other Bluetooth enabled handsets, hands free kits and other useful accessories.

Infrared can be used for connection to and from other phones that may not be blessed with the more up to date Bluetooth technology and can still prove useful in such circumstances.

The handset comes with a USB cable to allow transfer of data to and from PC's and laptop computers.

Another good use of the connectivity that the K800i provides is the ability to back up phone book contacts from the mobile phone to Outlook Express and vice versa. This is a handy back-up device which should prevent you losing all the contacts in your phone book (as I have done quite a few times! D'oh!!!)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

INTERNET

The K800i has quite a few options when it comes to internet connection. The handset utilises GPRS connection which is pretty fast. It also uses the Access NetFront web browser that allows full HTML browsing on the phone.

Other features available on the K800i are:

RSS reader: This allows you to update information on your phone from websites that allow this feature. At the moment I have RSS feeds on my phone for BBC news and Sky News. They can be updated whenever you want and this normally takes around a minute or so. Once you have the updates, you can read the headlines without using your internet connection but if you want more information, you can click a link to the website for the full story.

There are Email capabilities on the K800i. These include POP3 and IMAP4 formats and allow push e-mail available too. I must confess I haven't used this so a lot of this stuff is over my head - but email on a phone is another great way to keep in touch when you're on the move.

*** PLEASE NOTE ***

My BIGGEST gripe with the K800i lies with an internet-related issue…

On the model I received from Orange, there is an internet button on the upper left of the key pad - which is right next to the left soft key. The problem with this is the amount of times, I've accidentally brushed the internet key and been connected to the internet!

Once, I had put my phone down on my bed and went back to it about 15-20 minutes later to find that the internet was connected SO BE CAREFUL!!!

I phoned Orange about this issue to ask if there was a way to disable the internet button or designate it with another use but they said this is not possible and that the only way to stop the internet issue would be to remove the internet service from my phone altogether. I decided that this was not an option as MMS picture messaging requires the internet to send and receive images.

Orange gave me the number to Sony Ericsson to see if they could advise me if there was an alternative. They too advised me this could not be changed.

At my wits end, I called Orange back and spoke to an agent there who advised me of a way to side-step the issue as opposed to resolving it. He said you can change the settings so the internet can't connect - but you must remember the original settings to make it work again.

As I said, this INFERNAL button id the only thing I truly HATE about the K800i… other than that, it is a lovely phone. I have heard that not all network providers have the stupid internet button on the main keypad and have substituted it with another button and purpose. I would whole-heartedly advise you to check this out if you like me are likely to be driven mad by his feature!

*** RANT ENDS HERE!!! ***

----------------------------------------------------------------------

ENTERTAINMENT

The K800i has a pretty impressive host of entertainment options which includes the following:

Media player which supports MP3, WMA, RealAudio 8 and AAC/AAC+/eAAC+ audio

Supports MP4, 3GP, WMV and RealVideo 8 video

RDS FM radio which includes station identification

MusicDJ™, PhotoDJ™ and VideoDJ™

Streaming audio/video

Java games.
Some of these are in proper 3D. The ones that came with the K800i I received are:

Fotoquest Fishing: This is quite a relaxing game where you have to take photos of fish to progress to the next levels - which is a lot better than it sounds!

Mini Golf - Castles: A 3D mini golf game which is not too bad at all for a game which comes with the phone.

Tennis Multiplay: This is a pretty great little 3D tennis game which is a Sega game and is pretty addictive. The downside to this game is discovering that I have tourette's syndrome when I lose at it! Otherwise, this is a superb little game that is so much better than you would expect to come with a phone.

I've also downloaded some other pretty good games such as Namco's Pac-Mania - which is a 3D version of the classic Pac Man which I recall coming out on the old 8 bit computer systems many years ago. I also have a 3D rally driving game and 3D pool so there are some good games available out there for a few quid that will help reduce the boredom when on the move.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

CALL QUALITY

The call quality is very good on the K800i and is very crisp and clear. Call profiles can also be changed to suit the environment that you are in. This can include the following profiles:

Normal, Meeting, In car, Outdoors, Handsfree, Home and Office.

The hands free kit/headphones that came with the handset give very clear sound for calls and listening to the MP3 player or radio. Having had different Sony Ericsson headphones with the W800i though, I found these ones to be bigger and less comfortable in the ears as they kept falling out all the time! However, the do come with sponge covers for each earpiece which so far has removed this problem considerably.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY

All in all, Sony Ericsson have produced a reliable, good all-rounder of a phone with their K800i. The options available should meet most user's needs and while it's far from perfect, it certainly has more than enough going in its favour to allow most people to grin-and-bear the downsides to this great little handset.

If you're looking into a new mobile phone, you could currently do much worse than looking into this model!

** UPDATE!! UPDATE!! UPDATE!! UPDATE!! UPDATE!! **
----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ironically, after posting this review, I started to have a problem with my handset that hadn't previously happened.

When I was receiving calls to my mobile that were unanswered, I was getting the normal missed call screen asking whether or not I wanted to view the details of the missed call - as expected but instead of the vibration stopping when the call stopped either due to the caller hanging up or being transferred to my voice mail, it continued to vibrate endlessly until I either answered 'Yes' or 'No' to reviewing the missed call details.

Very unhappy at this new problem, I called Orange and explained it to them. For once, they actually admitted that this was indeed a problem that they had heard of previously about the K800i and that I would have to go into the settings and perform a master reset.

I asked if this would wipe my phone book, photos, videos and most importantly downloaded games as these can cost up to £5 or thereabouts each time. I was told these shouldn't be affected and although I was dubious - thinking that any call centre person could say that even if they're not certain themselves. Anyway, off I went and went to settings and found the master reset options.

To my relief, there were two options: Reset Settings and Reset All. I opted to reset the settings only as this advised me that my phone book, pictures, videos and games etc would not be affected.

Thankfully this resolved the problem with non-stop vibration when a missed call is received on the phone but needless to say I will be keeping a very close eye on the phone and its behaviour and will undoubtedly be updating this op should there be any more issues worthy of bringing to your attention!

** UPDATE!! UPDATE!! UPDATE!! UPDATE!! UPDATE!! **
----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------

As promised above, here I am with another update!!! I am currently on my third brand new K800i (though I had to fight to get a third new one rather than a reconditioned model from Orange!) in about 6 weeks!!! As if that wasn't bad enough, my third K800i has started to play up!!! Can you believe it?!? Am I a jinx or what?!?

"What the hell are you doing to these mobile phones of yours, you crazy fool?!?" I hear you asking in a Mr. T-esque manner!!! Well... the answer to that is... nothing... nada... nowt!!!

As I previously mentioned above, the problem I had on my second K800i was connected to an issue connected with the call log/missed call feature and I've been having issues with the same features on my current handset (so much for third time lucky!!!).

Instead of having problems with constant vibration (the sort of fault that nymphomaniac women would probably die for!) this handset started telling me I had missed calls but didn't display them at all when I went into my call log! I then discovered that it wasn't just my missed calls that weren't registering - my outgoing calls weren't either... or to put it another way... NO CALLS were being logged!!!

Pulling out the few remainging small clumps of hair that hadn't already turned grey and fallen out through sheer stress and frustration caused by my bad run of luck with the K800i/Orange, I decided I would call Orange and say I was far from happy!!!

The person I spoke to at Orange to be fair, was really nice and as helpful as she could be. She advised me that if I reset all my call logs and switched my handset on and off, it should remedy the problem...

But it didn't.

She then advised me to perform a master reset (anyone else getting déja vu here?) as that should definitely work in resolving the issue...

But it didn't.

She then said she would contact Orange's technical department and told me she'd get back to me as soon as possible.

I spoke to her on Sunday 21/11/06 and she tried calling me back while I was at work on Monday 22/11/06 and left me a voicemail on my mobile telling me the technical department had been back in touch with her and asking me to call her back - which I tried to do but got caught up in Orange's hellish queuing system for nigh on an hour without my call getting answered.

Tomorrow is another day after all... so I'll try again then!!!

I read up about K800i problems and found out that the problems my handset(s) suffer from is caused by the version of the firmware that is on the Orange models...

The version on my current handset is:
R1CB001

This is the first release and can suffer from quite a few problems - which I won't go into here as to do so would probably make you stay well away from the K800i - and to do so would be a real shame as it is a great little phone.

I only hope that Orange get an updated firmware soon so that it can iron out the problems I've experienced - and the ones that can apparently happen that I haven't yet seen!!!

As promised above, I will keep updating this review as the more info you have on how the handset can potentially run when you have it may prove to be very useful!

P.S. If you want to check the firmware etc you have on your K800i then go to your main menu screen and ensure that there are no shortcuts active on your left and right joystick movements.

In the following, < and > denote left and right pushes on the joystick respectively:

> * < < * < *

You will find it under Service Info > Software Info

Another interesting find in this area of the handset is the Service Tests menu. From here you can test certain areas of your handset to ensure it is working fully including:

- Main display
- LED/Illumination
- Keyboard
- Speaker
- Earphone
- Microphone
- Vibrator (Oooo-er, Missus!!!)
- Camera
- Video call camera
- Memory stick
- FM radio
- Real time clock
- Total call time
- Security

It's kind of like running an MOT on your phone - although as I have found out, there are some things that can get screwy without the need of tests to know they are knackered!!!

As a final note (for now!) it's worth mentioning that my call logs have started working again as strangely and as suddenly as they stopped working. For how long? Who knows? And what will Orange tell me when I call them back - following the info they now have from their technical department?!?

Join me for the next thrilling episode of:

"I'M AN ORANGE CUSTOMER, GET ME OUT OF HERE!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------
** UPDATE!! UPDATE!! UPDATE!! UPDATE!! UPDATE!! **
----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I am no longer an Orange customer!!! I told them to get stuffed and I have now become an O2 customer!!!

I still have the K800i from O2 and this one is pretty different from the last ones I had from Orange...

Instead of being the bog-standard black version of the handset, this one is the silver James Bond / Casino Royale edition (Bond is actually seen making use of the silver version of the K800i in Casino Royale so as a major movie geek and fan of the Bond movies, it made the jump from Orange all the sweeter!!!).

The phone also came with Bond related themes on the phone and was accompanied with three Bond movies on DVD - Goldfinger, The Man With The Golden Gun and Goldeneye... (with the whole thing about having Gold in quite a few Bond titles I'm amazed yet relieved that they didn't make the phone gold instead of silver!) all of which I already owned... but I guess that's what ebay was invented for!!! :o)

So - aside from a few teething problems with the network itself which affected the normal running of the phone, all is currently fine with both the handset and life under O2... TOUCH WOOD!

The O2 network has a few pros and cons compared to the Orange network. One cool addition is the ability to blog photos onto the net from your handset... a feature that was strangely absent from the Orange models...

One of the cons for me is that on O2 you can't send a text message and get a confirmation message that it's been received - although you could do this on Orange. You can however get confirmation of MMS or picture messages sent and received. This is apparently something to do with the way that O2 runs their GPRS service (I think) and is a very small problem compared to being stuck with Orange and their appauling "customer service".

ANYWAY...

I'm going to try to add some pics of my new silver K800i... I'm overall much happier with it now so perhaps my rants will end here...

But watch this space from time to time... just in case!!!

Many thanks for reading this! I hope it proved helpful!

Until next time...

Advantages: Ease of use, ability to connect to PC, intuitive
Disadvantages: Durability is pants.

...phones), I eventually plumped for Sony Ericsson's K800i. When I first opened the box, I was immediately impressed. Sony Ericsson had bundled a USB cable with the phone, enabling connection to my PC. This was something I had never encountered before and I'd always had to buy one for use with my Nokia. Once the phone had charged (which only took a few hours), I set about connecting to the PC. The installation was extremely easy and the software was ...
...like I'd always been a Sony Ericsson user. Physically, the phone was just as easy to use. The keys are responsive and just about the right size (any smaller and they'd be unusable) with the right spacing and the little joystick. The phone's just the perfect size for me to use and carry about. It's not the lightest phone I've ever owned, but I did find the weight comforting, initially suggesting that the phone was quite robust. Most of the little ... Read review

*Reluctant Goodbye To My K800i*
Review of Sony Ericsson K800i Cyber-shot by izzoh

Advantages: Robust, easy to use, Great Camera, light.
Disadvantages: No extra features, lens cover gets a bit loose.

...about my new phone the Sony Ericsson C902, before this I had the Sony Ericsson K800i, which I would call my old faithful friend. I used it, dropped it, and shouted at it and it still stood by me for 18 long months! When I had the K800i (I still have it, I couldn't dream of throwing it away… maybe selling it… but not throwing it away!) I have been on the 3 contract for a good few years now and this was my second upgrade from them. As you can guess, ...
...sell it in all silver. Sony Ericsson also did a limited edition 'royal' silver model… which I am guessing is another shade of silver to the normal silver model…… confused? Don't be, I think it was just a way of them selling more phones to the phone fanatics and it was in aid of a new James Bond film. The screen on this is quite big and is very clear, the only downside is when it is sunny or if you are in a bright room you literally cannot see the ... Read review

Advantages: Great cam, good looking, stylish

...like most of the other Sony Eriksson's but I find this one OK. My k750i joystick started playing up a couple of weeks after I got it but so far so good on this phone.
