Why I bought it?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I owned a trusty Nokia 5110 for over four years and thought that perhaps I was due for an upgrade.
I chose the T610 for a couple or reasons:
  • Sony Ericsson phones are renowned to be generally well made and reliable phones particularly after their merge.
  • I wanted a phone with a vast array of important functions that I could use to organise my life and synchronise with a laptop.
  • Just something fun to kill time with.
    I’m currently using the phone on Orange Pay as you go so I’ll do my best to explain all the functions that you can use with it on pay as you go.
Appearance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In my opinion, it’s a phone that would look great on a girl as well as a guy; it’s both sleek and sturdy design of 95g. There is nothing robust that protrudes from this phone; everything is compact and slim line –and no aerials! Its aluminium body with the slight grooves at the sides make it easy to hold without it slipping. There is a relatively small and fashionable keypad, that I haven’t incurred and problems with misdialling or texting, and a joystick which makes navigating and playing games a lot more fun and easier. The joystick also includes its own shortcuts where if you press up it will take you to your Wap homepage, down will take you to your phonebook and left will bring your to a page ready for you to start texting away. Other shortcuts to the phone include the camera button that brings you to the viewfinder on your screen to allow to starting snapping away. The on and off switch is concealed on the top of the phone next the infra-red transmitter-receiver. There is also a wap button on the right side, and volume buttons that can activate voice dialling on the left side.

The screen itself is of a lovely size and the quality of image is great for what it is. It can reproduce 65,536 different colours which exceeds most phones. I personally haven’t had too much problem viewing the screen in bright light so I will assume that Sony Ericsson have amended the issue. Either way, I believe that most colour phones suffer from bright days. The screen pixels are 128x160, but the camera gives you an option of taking pictures with the pixels of 288x352 which is a novelty if you’re planning to email your photos.

The camera at the back sits nicely in the phone next to the mirror viewfinder (an optional attachment that comes with the phone) should you want to take a self portrait. There is also the quirky and yet delightfully elegant Sony Ericsson Logo placed on the back of the phone which is almost gem-like.

The outer casing, in particular reference to the smooth black plastic on the top half of the phone does tend to attract greasy fingerprints. However, I do not find this affects the ability to view the screen, more so, Sony will provide you with a wipe cloth with the phone just so you can give it a quick clean every now and again.

The Menu and Interface
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The menu contains 12 icons which are all links to various functions on your phone. As I have explained, navigating the phone is child’s play with the joystick. You simply move the stick to where you want to go and press down to enter. There are four soft keys by the joystick, one is a general function button, and another is a select button, a cancel button to generally delete things and a back button which acts similarly to your back button on your web browser which is excellent particularly when browsing wap pages.
The icons include a shortcut icon which I would compare to a ‘Favourites’ button on your web browser which can list general shortcuts to different places on your phone which is superb when you want to access a certain function quickly such as “Profiles”. Profiles is a handy function which will allow you to change the phone’s sound setting for when you’re driving, in a meeting or on hands free and more. These profiles can also be automatically changed should you record it in to your organiser within the phone.
For those who love to customise their phone, the phone allows you to download Themes (many of them free) which will personalise your Screensaver, Wallpaper, Backgrounds and colours of the text.
Making Calls and Phonebook
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Functions include a caller ID, voice answer, any key answer.
The phonebook is superb! You can allocate your contacts a photo and ringtone each to you can recognise who is calling or texting you just by looking at the picture or listening to the ringtone. The phonebook also includes a function where you can record a person’s fax number, home number, work number and e-mail in a single entry as opposed to “Dave’s home” and “Dave’s work” scattered about your phonebook. It makes it a lot easier organising and shuffling through contacts.

The T610 also includes and optional function Minute Minder that makes a tiny sound every minute so when you call someone so that you know how long you’re spending on the phone if you’re counting the pennies. There is also an SMS counter to let you know how many texts you have sent if you’re trying to keep track

Messaging and Connecting – Texts, MMS, E-mails
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Texting is wonderful; the predictive usually gets your word 95% of the time. However, for all those who do prefer to type in shorthand (i.e. 2nite) you will have to program a lot of those into the dictionary. You can also add proper icon smilies to texts. More over, you can attach pictures, sounds, recordings, animations and ringtones to your texts to make them more interesting.
Another novelty with the T610 is that you can exchange ringtones, phonebook contacts, business cards and pictures via infra red which always saves you money on the ever dear MMS.
Bluetooth is also included in to the phone which enables you for a hands-free kit or exchanging and synchronising information with your laptop, palmtop, or PC.
Sound
~~~~~~~~~
The polyphonic sound has about 32 voices and can hold some brilliant ringtones. I currently hold about 60 full length polyphonic ringtones of various different songs and have plenty more room for more. More over, depending on the quality of ringtone that you choose to download on to the T610, they can be pretty load even in a quiet place.

There is also an option of recording your voice or any thing else you chose to record. Unfortunately, you cannot set these recordings as ring tunes but you can attach them to MMS texts.

For those who want a bit more fun with ringtones you can DJ your own with Music DJ on your T610. With this program you can create and compose your own ringtones by adding a various 128 pre-recorded samples of music. You get a chance to set up your own beat, bass lines and so on. For even more samples, you can compose tunes on the Sony Ericsson website and download them to your phone.

Games and Entertainment
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The T610 is compatible with Morphun and Java platforms. However, as most games are written for Nokia’s not all games you download will work well with the T610. There are many sites including Sony Ericsson that let you download these games for free. With the games I currently own the T610 can be a fraction too slow when loading them up, but it’s not something that gives the phone a disadvantage over others, it’s still a great phone.
Camera
~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to take really high quality images get a digital camera. However, if you’re satisfied in owning a phone for quick fun snaps the T610 is perfect.
There’s no flash with the phone, although you can buy the flash attachment if desired, but there is a night mode which helps (perhaps a longer shutter release). With the camera there is also Black and White, Sepia and Negative effects that can create fun images.

Final Little Details
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In optimum conditions the battery standby time will last you 315 hours and the talk time is 840 minutes, so not bad. If you do like to play a lot on your phone ringtones, games and the camera will eat up your battery life.
The phone memory is about 2MB. I wouldn’t mind having a little bit more but 2MB is sufficient. Like I said, I could get a fair few polyphonic tunes on my phone; I have about 7 good games and various amounts of pictures, animations and message templates yet still have a little room for more.
You have enough memory to place 500 contact numbers in the phone.
Conclusion
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I highly recommend this phone for anyone. It’s a generally a high quality reliable phone that does Sony Ericsson proud and should last you a good while unlike some phones. More over, it’s at a very affordable price; I paid £120 for this phone.

There are no major downsides to this phone. I can only criticise the amount of memory on the phone. I don’t personally find this to be a problem, as I’ve said; I can store a lot of things on this one little gadget. So to finalise – It’s:
  • Fun
  • Reliable, and….
  • Efficient.

Hope this helps!

Sony Ericsson T610 - review by rayliu

Advantages: Brilliant phone customisation, Good size screen with 65K colours (STN screen technology aside), Navigation system, Downloadable Games/Apps, Range of connectivity options
Disadvantages: Casing attracts fingerprints and smudges, Hard to view in sunny outdoor conditions, 2MB memory maybe too little, Back and Cancel buttons maybe confusing, Quick Access to WAP services can be costly if accidently pressed.
