After several years of happy mobile phone-ing with my ancient Motorolas, I was gutted when it finally broke the other day. I've been a customer of 3 pay as you go since way back in the day, and I decided to stick with them, and pay a visit to my local 3 Store to get a replacement. This will be my third phone on 3. The service has improved markedly since the early days.
Mobile phones-- especially 3G ones-- have come a long way since I bought my first of two Motorolas when 3 was a new network. Many of my questions met with barely concealed amusement. "All our mobile phones have the internet, madam!" and "all our phones take memory cards, madam!". However, my favourite style of phone-- the clamshell/"flip" style-- seems to be out of fashion these days. so I decided I wanted a "slide" type phone. Motorola, also, don't seem to make phones these days, so I had to change manufacturer, which I wasn't entirely happy about.
I spent an awfully long time dithering, and finally, about one minute before the shop shut, I decided on this fab new Sony Ericsson W595 "Walkman" phone, as it seemed to have the most features for the price. My very first mobile phone (in 1997) was an Ericsson GA628, and it was a great phone, surviving much dropping and several dunkings in coffee and one one notable occasion, a pint of orange squash. So I had high hopes for this one. I don't think I'll be spoiling the review much if I tell you I'm not disappointed at all so far.
I paid £129.99 for the phone, plus a mandatory purchase of £10 credit, which I was most miffed to discover had to go onto the new sim card, even though I wanted to put my old one in the phone. The price seems very reasonable, based on a quick Google search, many internet retailers are selling this for much more, which surprised me as I expect the internet to be cheaper.
Features
The phone, as you might expect from a "Walkman" branded phone, is very music-centric. It has 40Mb of on-board memory, and came with a 2Gb memory card in situ, which I wasn't expecting as I hadn't read the specs carefully, and was a nice surprise. It has stereo speakers and a "share" jack, so that a friend can plug in an additional pair of headphones. It has a 320x240 full colour screen, which is very smooth in appearance. The camera is 3.2 megapixels, and has many lighting modes, but no light or flash that I can find. It came with demo versions of many games installed, and has all the usual bells and whistles you expect with a phone these days, like a calendar, alarm, calculator, etc. It has Bluetooth, and came with stereo handsfree headphones and the data cable and software for connection to your PC.
The full spec is available in the product listing, so I won't bore you by listing minute details.
Using the Phone
It took me just a few minutes to find out where everything was and start playing. The menu system is fairly intuitive, and you can set up quick access using the directional pad. Many things are available through one button, like the camera and music.
I downloaded a game - SimCity Metropolis- and customized the phone very easily. I'm currently sticking a load of music onto the phone. Setting it up for the PC was very easy-- I just installed the software and plugged the phone in. I was pleased to discover that once the software is installed, the PC can see the phone as a device and you can transfer files over using Windows rather than having to run the phone software specifically. With 2Gb of memory, it should take a fair few tunes!
The sound quality when making calls is excellent, and the speakers on the phone are markedly superior to my old Motorola, being stereo and very clear.
Taking photographs is a doddle, and they are of reasonable quality. you can set the resolution of the picture, and can take photos in sepia, negative and black and white, as well as normal pictures. There's also a little gizmo called "PhotoDJ" which allows you to add things to your photos like frames and accessories.
One feature of this phone that amused me was that it can tell which way up it is when you're listening to music, and the screen displays in portrait or landscape orientation as required.
The only thing that annoyed me at all when I was getting set up was that the phone by default does not cut a call off when you close the slider, I had to adjust the settings for that.
Surfing the internet with this phone is very straightforward, and many of the the things you're likely to use - Facebook, myspace, Youtube, ebay etc-- are already listed in the Favourites menu. (I was pleased to discover that ebay is free! Aren't they great?)
Reception of the 3 network is better than on my old Motorola.
Overall
This is an excellent little phone. It feels light, is a good size, has all the features you would expect plus a few more, and is intuitive to use. I was very wary of changing brand and style of phone, but this was so straightforward I hardly even noticed I was on a new phone. It looks great, being a matte charcoal colour with silver and green trim. I can't really think of anything missing. Oh, it doesn't seem to have anywhere to attach a lanyard or dangly novelty item, but that's not really an issue for me. I am very pleased with this phone, and have no problems at all in thoroughly recommending it to anyone looking for a new phone.
*** Update After Having It a While ***
The battery life of this phone seems to be excellent. I use it for a lot of mobile internet, playing games and listening to music on the way to work and of course, making phone calls. It needs to be charged every two or three days during the working week-- this is with a total of several hours active use over those days.
The camera isn't great. It seems to be extra sensitive to movement and the majority of my pictures are blurry, which isn't a problem I had on my old phone or with my digital camera, so I know it isn't me. It's a great little video camera though. You can see a recording I made with it here. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=VyeuDIzrgG4
Some pictures I took with the camera are below.
All in all I still satisfied with the phone overall, but I think the camera would have to be improved for future models before I was to gain the same brand loyalty to Sony as I had to Motorola previously.

'Basic Idea'
*********
Sony Ericsson walkman series phones are most popular due to its excellent sound quality with controlled equalizer system and a feature which is lifeline of walkman series and that is Mega bass. I also enjoyed a lot with its mega bass facility and it provides excellent theatrical experience of music. There are some problems with charger and headphone sockets in walkman series and I think this problem ... ...am going to discuss about Sony Ericsson W595, and of course I use to review walkman series phones from Sony Ericsson always. I will keep some good points of this phone with its advantages and some disadvantages also.

Advantages: cool design, good mp3 player Disadvantages: buttons are too flat, hard to press
I've been using this phone for more than 1 year, changed to it from my old Motorola L6. Just wanted a phone that can play mp3 and this phone really suited my needs. With a normal phone dimention, quite thin actually, this phone can fit easily into the pocket and I do not feel uncomfortable with it. My brother has a Nokia N7 but he rarely put it inside his pocket because it's very thick. The phone has a 480 x 320 display LCD that produces really good ... ...under bright sun (have to use my hands to cover the screen so that I can see). The slide design is really cool and te buttons under the screen allows really fast access to music player, changing songs, volume. There is not different between this handphone and a mp3 player.
The battery is not bad. I usually charge it every 2 days since I use as mp3 player quite often, but for normal use only, i think it will beable to last for at most 1 week.
