-introduction-
I saved up for aegis to get this phone. It was over a year ago now and I can remember looking at the price of it and thinking " how will I afford that" but as you do I looked around and found it on ebay for £100 pounds cheaper, brand new and unopened! When I received it a few days later I couldn't wait to get home from school to rip open the parcel and see just what it was like and that is what I am going to describe to you. Exactly what it IS like. And to explain what all the fuss is about over Sony Ericsson Walkman phones.

-The Box-
This mobile box is unlike the others, as instead of the normal plain cardboard box this is a plastic slim box with an orange lid bearing the Walkman symbol. It measures just over 23-cm tall and13 cm wide. When you open the lid you must be careful as you slide the cardboard around the phone out and see just what you have got! The box displays clearly all the main features of the phone, which I will talk about later, a picture of the phone and is set out in the colours of the phone itself. The front is left clear so you can see the phone and the headphones for the MP3 player and the standard memory card that comes with it. In the box there is the handset, a battery, a memory stick, a set of headphones and 3 sizes of ear-buds for them. Also included is all the software for your PC that is needed to put your favourite music on and your favourite pictures on and off and a user manual.
The box Is really good as it is strong and it matches the phone itself and displays all the info you need if you wish to purchase it.

-User manual-
The user manual is all you need to learn about how to use the phone and what exactly all the functions are and how to access them. It has 8 sections clearly displaying information with the use of large coloured diagrams. The manual covers everything like inserting your sim card to using bluetooth hands-free kits on the phone.
The manual is really good and helped me to understand hoe to use my phone properly as it displays everything clearly with diagrams and small pictures of the different buttons etc.

-Style and colour-
The phone is a pearl white colour with bright orange side strips and detailing. Not my first choice of colours but it goes so well I wouldn't want to change it even if I could. It has and overall modern look to it as although the number pad buttons are the same pearl white, the main selection buttons (delete button, Walkman button select button etc) are a shiny silver colour. The screen and the buttons are in perfect proportion as none are too big or too small. On the back the camera is made in a circle surrounded by the orange highlighting containing the camera, the flash, speaker and a small mirror (for taking pictures of yourself) this looks very nice but the Sony Ericsson badge and writing going up vertically does spoil it a wee bit.
Over all the style is amazing and really makes you look twice at this phone, I love it and I'm sure you would too.

-battery-
The battery is just a standard Sony Ericsson 3.6volt battery that slots nicely over the sim card and through the phone. It is easy to place in and take out again if needed and full instructions of how to do so can be found in the user manual. I am not sure of the exact charge times or battery life but it suits me well as it takes hardly any time to charge and can keep going for aegis. The only downfall is it can run out pretty quickly if you use the Walkman feature on speaker a lot.

-Start-up screen-
There is a unique start up screen featured on most of the Sony Ericsson Walkman models that allows you to either just play music without starting the phone features or start up the phone. Not having the phone features on means that no radio signals are received or sent meaning you can listen to music when you are on a plane for instance when mobiles arrant allowed. Choosing to start up the phone enables all features and if there is a password on your sim card you will be asked for it. You can get the music player if you start up the phone as well.

-Headphones-
The headphones that are given with the phone are of the Sony Ericsson brand and you will need to use them to access the radio feature (as the aerial is in them). They also double as a hands-free kit by the press of a button on the wire. They come in 2 parts, the 1st part plugs into the phone and this is needed to use headphones with the phone, as it has no jack plug. On the end of the 1st wire there is a jack plug that the Sony Ericsson headphone plug into, you can Plug any headphones into this but I haven't felt the need for different headphones. The 2nd part is the ear phones themselves. They are the small "in-ear" type that doesn't damage your hearing like other cheap ones but still deliver great quality sound.
The wire for the earphones is quite small but the wire for the first bit is long so the earphones can't be used for other appliances. As stated earlier there are 3 sizes of ear buds to choose from and these just slide onto the end on the earphone.

-Walkman-
The all-important Walkman!! Where to start!! The software provided is needed to put on your beloved music and only that software can be used. It is easy to use but I have found that you sometimes need to re-install it (no idea why but works for me). There are 2 ways of accessing the Walkman feature, by going to the tab on the menu or by pressing the Walkman butting (in the middle if the top row of buttons) pressing the Walkman button results in the Walkman feature coming up no matter what you are currently doing. It is easy to browse the files by selecting artist, songs, playlist or videos. It is easy to make a playlist as you can just select CD's or just a certain song (all info in users guide). You get a basic 512MB-memory card with the phone or in some deals I have seen it with a 1 GB card. You can see how much memory you have left by pressing the " volume down " button at the normal screen (when no functions are selected and background picture is showing). There are also 2 buttons, one on either side of the phone, that can select to play or pause music or control the volume of music even when the keypad is locked. If no headphones are plugged in the Walkman plays through the built in speaker in the back, the only problem with the speaker, is that when in a crowded area with lots of background noise you can hear it very well.
The Walkman feature is one of the best MP3 players I have seen in a phone and is what sold it for me, that is what everyone is raving about and so they should be its just GREAT!

-Games-
There are two games on this phone, puzzle slider and Quadrapop. Puzzle slider isn't that good a game and has been done before. I never play it. Quadra pop on the other hand is totally addictive!! Its like the old classic Tetris but sticking with the music theme of the phone uses different music symbols that must be connected in rows of at least 4 to make them disappear and get points. I love this game it is so fun and best of all my sister is rubbish at it!!! Apart from these games Sony Ericsson have a range of free games on their official site that you can browse and then download for free. Included in these games are Mini Golf and an application that allows you to convert various measurements from imperial to metric or vice versa.

-Messaging & calling-
Well it wouldn't be a phone if it didn't do messaging and calling. The text message folder allows you to save sent and received messages make templates and make a list of friends that you often send the same texts to so you can click on the list and send it to them all. You can also send smilys and pictures in texts. It texts very well and since that's like all I do that is great. It is easy to browse the inbox and outbox alike and as a short key you can move the joystick left to write a new message.
Another short key is moving the joystick down, this opens the phone book. In the phone book you can put a picture to people's names and store a mobile number home number etc under the one entry. You can change the volume when phoning people and there is a speaker setting to.
As well as extras it works as a real phone too!! GREAT!

-Other Features-
Bluetooth, infared, WAP, Music DJ, Video DJ, Picture DJ are all but a few of the other features on this phone.
The bluetooth allows you to have a wireless handfree kit or send pictures for free with your buddies.
Infared also allows you to send pictures and songs with your buddies.
The music DJ allows you to make up a song (polyphonic) and can be used as a ring tone by choosing different beats and placing them in a sequence. Really quite fun and it all works!
The Photo and Video DJ allows you to edit pictures and videos either taking or already exiting on the phone by putting in other pictures, drawing etc.

-Camera-
Wow yet another great feature on this already fantastic phone.
The camera is 2.0 mega pixels and is superb quality. It has an optional flash for dark situations, night mode and different sizes of frame. Auto focus gives you a perfect picture and with 4x digital zoom you cant go wrong. You can take short video clips too, all effects apply and there are 2 sizes of quality.
Only down side to the camera is that the auto focus can mean you miss out on the special moment and the video clips are short (very short).

-Conclusion-
If you are looking for a new phone, love music and pictures this is the phone for you. Although it is pricey it is worth it. A quality sturdy phone that does every thing. I don't know about the other Walkman phones in this range but this one is really up there. The best phone I have ever had.
Sony Ericsson has done it this time.
10/10

It's not fair, his phone's better than mine
Review of Sony Ericsson W800i Walkman by sandemp

Advantages: Great phone, brilliant camera, excellent MP3 player
Disadvantages: mmmm - it's my husband's and not mine

...the top of the range Sony Ericsson W800i, a phone that's also a 2MP camera and a walkman. The reason he actually ended up with this particular model, is that he decided to finally take the plunge and get a contract phone instead of PAYG, and this was available for free with the contract he chose. ---The Styling--- The W800i is one modern looking phone, being mainly pearl-white in colour with orange highlighting. This doesn't sound a very nice combination ...
...it sounds. This is NOT a flip-phone, and therefore is not the smallest phone to hit the shelves, but that's not to say it is in anyway bulky. Measuring in at 10 x 4.6 x 2cm it certainly doesn't create much of a bulge in the pocket, and at just 99g it certainly won't weigh you down. ---The Battery--- For me at least, one of the most important parts of a mobile phone is the battery, it's life and how long it takes to charge. Charging wise, things ... Read review

Walk like a man...with Sony
Review of Sony Ericsson W800i Walkman by alba_celt

Advantages: a wealth of facilities
Disadvantages: none as yet

I have the W800i in black, and it\'s one of the best buys i have had, despite a couple of initial hiccups. The phone\'s features (and it has quite a few) are as follows: 1. Walkman- displays what track is now playing, what artists you have on file; the tracks, playlists and videos. The display facilities are great, simply because it enables you to flit from one track to the next. The artists are listed alphabetically (for those of us who like things ...
...simpler to navigate. The playlist feature is cool too, because you can choose what you want to hear when. My kids especially love the video feature on the phone, as one of the demos has a cartoon on it. The phone enables you to download tracks and music videos, and regular movie clips etc, depending on what you can get a hold of online. 2. world wide web- you can navigate your way through the internet, using your server\'s online mobile facilities. ... Review of Sony Ericsson W800i Walkman by mattyexpress

Advantages: Great Camera, nice basic MP3 player, decent battery life
Disadvantages: Very glitchy, buttons too small, poor build quality

Let's just put this on the table - this is not the first review of the W800i so is not going to tell you about a hidden feature that no ones discovered But.. it's going to be honest and straight down the line which is what you want to and need to hear before thinking about buying this little peice of apricot pie. I've had my w800i for almost a year and given it a full workout now so I feel like I've bonded and can be objective in my review. Is it ...
...got your eye on, then yes, it's pretty good. If you text a lot and pound those buttons more then the sounds pound you, then I think you may want to deliberate a little. What's hot? The phone doubles as a camera quite nicely with a dedicated button on the side and nice software features on the phone to edit the pictures. At 2 mega-pixels its not a heavyweight player but you'll be pleased with the results on the screen and when connected up to a ... Read review

My Sony Ericsson & I
Review of Sony Ericsson W800i Walkman by shellbell2

Advantages: Lots of features and easy to use
Disadvantages: I can't marry it!!

...phones since then but, the Sony Ericsson W800i is my favourite, so far. If you're like me and a texter then this phone is brilliant it has predictive text which brings up a list of words and even puts your most used at the top of that list making texting really quick. You can store around 150(ish) in your inbox/sent boxes and you can chose which you want to delete when the memory is full, if like me you save the ones telling you how fab your are!! ...
...on the links to the Sony Ericson site which is really easy to do. There is also plenty of free ringtones, message alerts etc on there too. You can even access google, and many other web pages. (sadly not my bank yet as the page is too large, but this does save me from fainting in public places at the sight of my bank balance). The other good thing about this phone is that you can, ring people with it, text, picture message, and email too! Amazing ... Read review

Sony Ericsson W800i mobile phone
Review of Sony Ericsson W800i Walkman by Maniac1701d

Advantages: Small, easy to use, light
Disadvantages: Battery can seem short after using other SE phones

I've stuck with Sony Ericsson phones now for a while due to their reliability, good battery life and ease of use and all in all the W800i is no exception. The phone is sleek, good looking, lightweight and compact although the keys are not always as user friendly as I'd like. Features: Ringtones A few polyphonic are included and there is also a sample of real music tunes already installed on the phone. They are not full tracks though. Vibrating ...
...Calendar Alarm clock - I always use my phone to wake me up. Speakerphone facility is available during calls and has a good quality as well. The caller do not hear themselves when they are on speaker so no annoying feedback or confusing calls. This model, like the ones before has useful voice dialling facility. It also has a facility where you can record audio - leave yourself messages to listen to later, record other people or just record your ... Read review

Reviews which might be of interest for Sony Ericsson W800i Walkman
Philmeister's W850i review
Review of Sony Ericsson W850i Walkman by  bumface69

Advantages: Big memory, walkman and headphones are superb, battery's not bad either
Disadvantages: Camera's nothing special, can be temperamental, keypad's a bit fiddly

...Firstly, a bit about me: I work in a phone shop, and I am an ardent, bordering on militaristic, fan of Sony Ericssons. If the original walkman phone, the W800i, had been a woman i would have married it. It was dependable, plenty of features, and it was good fun, plus i always was a sucker for a redhead. The W850i, however, is something a bit different. The memory is great, twice as big as the W800i, and the mp3 player itself is absolutely superb. Sony Ericsson have also, wisely, gotten rid of their traditional achiles heel, the rubbish joystick which plagued the K700i, K750i and even my beloved W800i. Furthermore, for a 3G handset the battery is pretty impressive. I am a frequent, if reluctant, traveller on Britain's godawful train network, and my W850i has lasted the course of many a delayed journey without the battery packing up... Read review

Beauty as well as Brains!
Review of Nokia 7390 by  MissPiglet

Advantages: Nice looking phone, lots of functionality, great camera
Disadvantages: No major disadvantages

...I got this phone as a free upgrade on my Vodafone contract. Normally, around renewal time, I take a look at what handsets are an offer and set my heart on one phone in particular - I like to go for an all round phone that has one or two extra good features. 18 months ago it was the Sony Ericsson W800i which was new out and had the Walkman facility which didn't prove to be a disappointment, and this time it was the Nokia 7390. I normally go for Sony Ericsson phones as I've always had a good experience with them but a few things caught my eye with the 7390: -Camera: It's a 3 mega pixel camera which I think is the higher end of what's readily available in the shops -Flip Phone: I always find it keeps the screen cleaner - I managed to get a huge scratch on the screen of my W800i within weeks of getting it! -Expandable Memory: It... Swivel on it
Review of Sony Ericsson W900i by  cwb1

Advantages: Big screen, big internal memory, menu system and 30 fps video cam
Disadvantages: Too big, too swivelly, too heavy, keypad lock mechanism very poor

...Introduction I was given this phone by a friend about 2 months ago because I was curious as to what these new music phones were like, and have been using it since. It is the newest version of the Walkman series by Sony Ericsson, and is a combination of the memory and features of the W800i and the design of the W550i. This is Sony Ericsson's first UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) handset to be added to their Walkman range of phones. The attraction of this phone has got to be its music-oriented image: Sony have used their expertise as a portable music specialist to good effect on this device, and given us a fairly swish-looking phone to back it up. There is a choice of two colours - black and white. I'm not entirely sure why the manufacturers offer a white version as it will become dirty-looking much more quickly... Read review
