Whoever said that smaller was better?
I'll share with you my views on the ups and downs of the latest handset from the Sony Ericsson Walkman range.
I'll try and not waffle on too much about the exact spec of the phone, you can find that elsewhere. But I'll tell you from a users point of view what is good, and what really isn't.
It is very light, very small, and for the first time ever I have a 3G phone that fits in my pocket without ripping the seams!
I like the design. Quite simply - its nice!
THE MUSIC
The upside...
My favourite thing about the phone, as with the W850i, is that it comes with a whopping great 1GB memory card in the box. And yes, I have filled it up with several albums from my computer! Do i listen to it all?? No - theres too much! But nice to know I have all of my favourite music with me at all times just in case my mood takes me!
Being on Vodafone, I also have a program called Radio
DJ, which, to put it simply, is music streaming based on preset genre's, styles, and era's of music. So I can merrily listen along to music I dont already have stored on my phone. Great!!
The walkman program on the phone is simple to use, and with a little time playing around with it i think i know how to use every function of it already! The one button shortcut to the walkman program is very handy indeed. When i want music, i want it now! And this phone makes it possible.
The downside...
The speaker. The biggest mistake is most definately the speaker. A music phone with a quite literally rubbish speaker. Whats the point? I have nearly 1 gig of fantastic music on my phone, and it all sounds rubbish coming out of the speaker! It sounds fine on the in-box speakers you get ,and also fantastic on the Sony Ericsson speakers i got with the SE V630i (how fortunate!!). But with pretty much no audible bass - even with the equilizer set to MegaBass - the sound is barely recognisable as a song!
Also, this poor excuse for a Walkman phone has no FM radio unlike the rest of the Walkman range. Doesnt bother me personally as I dont like the radio much anyway. But I feel, like many others I'm sure, that radio defiantely belongs on a music phone.
THE PICTURES
The upside...
It has a 2mp camera. Nice high quality camera. Up until recently, 2mp camera's have been at the top end of the new generation of digital camera's with phones attached. But with several phones now with 3/3.2mp cameras, the camera on this phone will be well past its sell by date by the time your lovely new 18 month contract is up! Although for now at least, I wont personally complain if all the pics I have a 2mp.
The downside...
No flash - pictures in the day only for this phone. Alternatively provide your own lighting set.
No auto focus - now I'm getting annoyed!!! This perfectly arranged and hilarious picture I have just taken of my friends is blurry at best. Even if no one moved and inch and I had the steadiest hand in town, the background is as clear as the image in the foreground. Not quite the perfect picture it was meant to be. Oh and dont forget to stand under a light to take the picture!
THE PHONE
The upside...
It is a 3G phone. I can do my video calling (if I win the lottery I might even make a few video calls!!!). I can watch mobile TV from my phone (luckily its included as part of my phone package).
Some of the programs on the phone are quite fun. Like the Video DJ - allowing me to put together a string of videos, pictures, text etc to form a movie. Nice ieda, and fun for those who have always wanted to be a film producer! YouTube beginners will love it im sure!.
Its light, small and stylish. Like I said earlier, it even fits in small pockets!! Yey!!
The downside...
The buttons are a bit too small for comfort. Texting is something I am quite talented at - capable or typing out long texts in short spaces of time. I can just about get on with the buttons when texting but it takes a little longer than im used to, and im sure others will struggle with it more (I have fairly small fingers).
The reception. Possibly just Vodafone, I dont know! My phone on the 3 network gets 2g and 3g signal all the time and everywhere i go. My w880i on vodafone is less cheery on this perticular. I rarely get 3g at home, and rarely at work, and raraly ever to be honest. 2g is fine. But it means my mobile tv really is mobile - i cant watch it at home. Lets just hope it works next time im bored on the train!
THE SUMMARY
Its a phone. Making calls and texts is not a problem (unless you have fat fingers - or even just nails at that! The battery life is pretty good. I use the phone a lot and it lasts at least a few days before recharging.
Phone Rating - 7/10
Its a music player (walkman if you prefer). I can store more than enough. Its easy to arrange and put together a playlist. Fantastic! On my headphones its amazing. Through the speaker (doh!) and your better off tapping on a table and pretending you can hear it in your head!
Music rating - 7/10
Its a digital camera. 2mp is good enough quality for me, but I really struggle to get a good picture with no flash and no autofocus. The use of my camera may well dwindle as I get fed up with poor photo after poor photo! No wait, I just got a good one, what a piece of LUCK!
Camera Rating - 5/10
Overall Rating - 6.5/10
I've had the phone a week now. I love the fact it has 1mb of memory. I love the look and style. But i feel let down by the speaker and camera. The small buttons I'll live with.
Still undecided whether or not take change it under the 14 day returns and exchange policy...
More of a music phone than a camera phone. If you want a better camera phone with less emphasis on music, try the K800 or similar.
In one sentence - A great phone comprimised by its size.
Hope you enjoyed reading, and hope this is helpful.

Still can't decide which phone to upgrade to. I've had the W810i and still really like it, but this does not seem like a step up really. Good review.

...still looking for the replacement for my W810i, looks like this one won't be it... only use camera/radio/alarm/phone, not bothered about walkman functionality.

nice to the point review, have one of these, not yet decided whether I will keep it over my existing k800 though
Advantages: Slim, lightweight design, good screen, easy to use phone. Disadvantages: Some features in other walkman phones missing due to it being slim
