When I seen the W880i for the first time, my immediate thought was I need to get this phone. With its wafer thin size and so light I have often had to double check that it was still in my pocket it is the ulitmate in stylish and compact phones - or is it.
As with most things, they seem great until you get it, then you find all the flaws and soon it becomes nothing more than just another toy. Well in some ways the W880i is great and some others its not.
I have had quite a few mobile phones in my life and for some strange reason I just can not seem to get to grips with the functions of this one at all. The buttons are tiny, so small in fact that they are
like tiny staples on your phone, all cramped together, and unless you have little fingers its difficult to use.
Okay so this doesn't make the W880i a bad phone, but wait because there is more. The thin battery doesn't seem to be able to last more than a week, even when the phone is used very little, and the annoying internet button goes off in your pocket and before you know it you are paying for Internet usuage that you have no idea about. Okay so I should put the phone lock on, but by the time you manage to push the right buttons you'd have been better chucking it in the bin. Lastly on the complaints list is the robustness of the phone, well it feels like it could just be snapped in two, but apply a little pressure and you can feel how well built the phone actually is, that is until you notice the screen inside the phone starting to crack, I already have two cracks inside the phone (its 4 months old) and it has not been dropped or mistreated.
So looking at it the W880i is a terrible phone, right..... WRONG! As I said before this phone is wafer thin and very light, if you can live with all the minor points above and keep it wrapped in cotton wool it is actually an excellent phone.
Take for instance the walkman function. You are supplied with a 1 GB memory card (wait to you see the size of this thing) which is enough to hold about 20 or so albums, or 250 songs. The walkman function is simple to use, the buttons on the side can be used for easy volume adjust or for flicking through your wonderful collection of cheesy music. The software provided is great and uploading your favourite Vanilla Ice (If you like that sort of thing)song is a breeze. The sound quality ain't bad either, although the headphones are definitely recommended.
Then you have the camera, no bearing in mind that there is no flash provided this little camera is very good. It can be easily activated with one button on the side of the phone which when held on its side is like holidng an actual camera. Its a two megapixel and has taken better pictures that my 5 megapixel kodak camera. Lets face it, if your phone does have a flash, does it make a blind bit of difference... didn't think so. So what sony have done is put some sort of intelligent sensor which adjust the right amount of light to the camera to provide a better quality picture. That said pictures taken on a sunny day always look better than in dull days or indoors, but tell me a cameraphone that is like that.
Add a whole host of other applications like bluetooth, internet access, T9 Texting, Video and everything else you can expect from a good phone then there is not much to complain about. The only thing would be that dreadful game that is supplied with the phone, come on Sony give us a break.
So in conclusion this phone has its flaws, but after 4 months of use so do most phones, if everything was perfect them sites like ciao would not exist, so long live the flaws. The phone itself is the porsche of phones, as people ogle it in awe as you slide it out your smallest pocket. Get used to the size of the buttons and you'll fall in love with its great sound, its excellent camera and all its other functions.
Buy it : If you are a poser or need room and have smallish fingers. If you like music and like taking quick pictures.
Dont buy it : If you have more than averaged sized fingers, don't like music or don't like drawing attention to yourself.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Advantages: Slim, lightweight design, good screen, easy to use phone. Disadvantages: Some features in other walkman phones missing due to it being slim
